Paul McMahon, co-founder and managing partner of SLM Partners. An asset manager that acquires and manages rural land on behalf of institutional investors, to scale up regenerative, ecological farming and forestry systems that deliver financial returns and environmental benefits.

We covered a wide range of things in this interview, mainly looking at the trends that are changing the food and agriculture sector and what it means for conventional and non conventional producers! Where are the challenges and opportunities in the sector and what should (smart) impact investors look for?

  • 49 Harrie, Arnout and Koen, where will we plant billions of trees against climate change?

A deep dive into the tech and business models to plant billions of trees on degraded land.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

I interviewed Harrie Lovenstein, Arnout Asjes and Koen Kramer of Land Life Company. An ecosystem restoration company working to reforest hundreds of thousands of hectares. We discussed the technologies they are developing to drawdown as much co2 as possible! And their changing business model, from selling a tree planting tech to offering end to end reforestation services.

    Key points of the interview:

    • Koen: trees are really fascinating organisms standing on a single place for centuries and having to cope with anything that goes by
    • Koen: It is really necessary to use trees to use forests to sequester carbon to to protect biodiversity to protect areas and soils and to hand them over in a better state to the next generation
    • Koen: I mean the science and the government are not going to do this. That is a too lengthy and too inefficient kind of process
    • Arnout: we really went from a product oriented company to an end to end reforestation company
    • Arnout: now our clients pay us for either for per hectare or per ton CO2 sequestered
    • Arnout: we are engaging in a process called data driven planting where we want to plant as much trees as possible in a planting season we want to do it at the lowest cost possible and at the lowest impact to nature
    • Koen: Scale is really important because you have to really build in a forest. So tens and hundreds of hectares are good at the end of the day you really need to restore landscapes catchments
    • Harrie: you can eat CO2 credits
    • Arnout: each tree we have a G.P.S. lock so lat long which is unique for a tree
    • Arnout: I don't think the public can imagine what the impact is
    • Arnout: I think this (restoration) is becoming an industry

  • 48 Russell Wallack, which trees to plant where? Answering the oldest question in agriculture

Using software to answer the key question when doing agroforestry on a watershed level, which tree to plant where and why? In this interview with Russell Wallack of Terra Genesis and co founder of Brasa, we cover a lot of ground but try to give (part of the) answer to the key question in agriculture, what to plant where and why? Especially in agroforestry systems this is key, as trees can’t walk to a more optimal spot.

  • 47 Ruud Zanders, the revolutionary poultry farmer about the role of animals in feeding the world

What is the role of animals in the food system of the future?

    -----------------------------------------------------------

This time I interviewed Ruud Zanders of Kipster, diving deep into the question: What is the role of animals in the food system of the future (if any)?

    Takeaways:

    • Pigs and chickens can do something amazing turning food waste (which humans can’t or don’t want to eat) into protein and manure
    • If the livestock industry would only use residual waste for chickens and pigs and marginal lands for cows, goats and sheep there would be 20grams of animal protein per person per day available around the world
    • We have to eat less animal based proteins
    • Why take 10kg of grain which could feed 10 people, feed it to chickens and feed 2-4 people with it?
    • First sell then produce (in this case through a 5 year agreement with the Lidl)
    • Why feed organic grains (which could feed humans) to an animal?
    • Scale is key to have an impact- Catching all the fine dust from stable
    • Manure is dried and sent to farms
    • Roosters are not killed immediately (like the industry standard) but grown to become chicken hamburgers (also bough by the Lidl)
    • Climate neutral egg using solar energy
    • The eggs are sold for prices between organic and free range
    • Consumers are ready to pay for food but you have to explain why you are different
    • Ruud has doubts about the insect businesses coming up, why creating a new animal industry (insects) to feed another animal industry (chickens?) why not eat the insects directly?

The first Kipster was financed by a private investor (after securing the Lidl off-take agreement of 5 years), the new Kipsters are financed by bank loans. Advice from Ruud Look at ecological efficiencies, why are we doing this on this piece of land? Why are you using animals for xyz?

If Ruud could wave a magic wand he would stop using animals in our food system.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

This time I had a the pleasure to interview Abby Rose, AgTech founder, farmer, and co-host of Farmerama!

    Key takeaways of the interview:

    • we need to build a fire friendly landscape
    • fires have always been there but not the intensity and degree burning over 1m acres- Abby is mostly surrounded by mono culture pine forests which burn like nothing else- moisture in the soil to have all year round plants which don’t burn so easily
    • if you have a very diverse microbial life in the soil, it is potentially reflected in the nutritive value in the produce
    • Abby worries any single measure, if she had to pick a measure the measure would diversity!
    • the reason for starting Vidacycle was the lack of data from the olive farm. They planted 8000 trees but had no idea which trees were performing or not
    • the more we can support small to medium scale farmers to flourish more the better
    • the tech solutions weren’t there or were way too expensive
    • fundamental about all of our technology is empowering farmers
    • farmers are perfectly capable in understanding how their soil system works
    • first they developed sector mentor to help manage olive farms, vineyards etc.
    • soil mentor for soils, very simple DIY soil testing for farmers, using only equipment already present on the farm
    • very excited about the opportunities to work with a number of small to medium size vineyards in Oregon
    • biggest issue in food and ag: food prices, food is so cheap, but the truth is food isn’t cheap.
    • technology is not going to save us, what will save us is changing mind sets- technolog is a tool which will aid people
    • please don’t invest in a random technology which is going to save us all

If Abby had a magic wand: true cost accounting system for food

    Advice for investors:
Go and work on some farms, and understand the reality of farming

    -----------------------------------------------------------

Today I’m joined by Zach Weiss of Elemental Ecosystems working on water retention landscapes.

Thank you Judith D. Schwartz for the introduction to Zach!

    Take aways from the interview:

    • Climate change is a symptom of the severe water cycle disturbance and there is something we can do about it!
    • When the landscape isn’t being recharged with water, it leads to flooding and drought (worst case also fire)
    • Humans desertified 1/3 of the earth’s cover the last 10.000 years
    • We are carbon based life but the living part is mostly water
    • There is much more you (as a land owner/manager) to influence the water cycle on and above your land- Often when we talk about water we talk about big centralised water systems or the weather, Zach is focussed on decentralised water retention landscapes- Sub-irrigated, you use a lot less energy
    • Climate changes: everywhere the same story the precipitation is more when it comes and it comes less often
    • Large dams and reservoirs are very energy intensive, smaller decentralised water retention systems are much more efficient
    • Flood fire and drought mitigation is a sector Zach is very interested in
    • Zach is building a platform to franchise his model, to pilot this in 2020
    • Huge opportunity for video visual content, what have we done during the last 10.000 years, and our role and our options
    • Could be something we all can get behind, water retention.
    • We can’t address climate change without addressing the water cycle disturbance
    • Zach tries to use most of the time with costumers on the implementation not on the consultation

Advice for investors from Zach (not investment advice): Rewriting natural resource policy management, very often what Zach wants to do is illegal.
