I had the pleasure of interviewing Michiel de Man, strategy director of Commonland. We discussed how to unlock inspiration in one of the driest places is Spain, how farmers came together to take ownership of their future. How a regenerative almond business was started (plus many other business cases).

What Commonland is doing with major companies and why Michiel is so passionate about regenerative agriculture. Enjoy!

An interview with Joe Baird, impact investor who I met in Veglio Northern Italy, where he is introducing regenerative agriculture methodes to restore the countryside, both ecologically and socially. He splits his time between California and Northern Italy where he tries to connect rural and urban areas. We covered among other things, like farmer health in this episode. Looking at ways to make sure farmers and their family make enough income to survive, so they can actually take care of the soil in the long run.

  • 02 Tony Lovell, regenerate soils with a 100M fund and many cows

    -----------------------------------------------------------

I had a conversation with Tony Lovell, Co founder and CEO of SLM Partners an asset manager that acquires and manages rural land on behalf of institutional investors, to scale up regenerative, ecological farming and forestry systems. Mainly talking about their Australian projects where they use livestock to regenerate the soils. They had some tough first years of the fund (two of of the worst droughts ever recorded) but things seems to be going better now.

We also talked about the resistance innovators like SLM face when doing something different in a conservative sector like agriculture. Both from the farmers side as from the investors side, it takes a lot of courage (or necessity) to try something different.

Some more points we touched in the interview:

    • Regenerative Agriculture isn’t spreadsheet agriculture
    • We are building a little village around each grass plant
    • Stress on animals is the biggest hidden cost on livestock
    • Your investment, is based on biology
    • Where does it (regenerative agriculture) fit in a portfolio, not connected to other asset classes, oil prices etc.
    • What role does regenerative agriculture play in your portfolio? Is it solid and stable enough for a decade or longer?

How to grow trees in the desert? And restore the 2b hectares of nature we destroyed?

This time I interviewed Jurriaan Ruys CEO and co founder of Land Life Company. A company dedicated to make large scale nature restoration projects viable by making sure the trees you plant (even in extremely harsh environments) survive and grow to be strong and healthy trees. Thus kickstarting the recovery of nature.

We covered quite a bit in this interview, from large scale ecosystem restoration projects (with Monarch butterflies in Mexico) and smaller topics like how it is to scale up a company this quick and moving from a very corporate atmosphere to found a startup. Enjoy!
