Ladies and gentlemen of Sun Devils nation, it was anything but pretty but the Arizona State Sun Devils football program won its 2023 season opener vs. the Southern Utah Thunderbirds and started the season 1-0 in the Kenny Dillingham and Jaden Rashada era. This win was indeed a tale of two-halves. Rashada and the offense were clicking beautifully in the first-half with some great passes deep, great run-after-catch/contact plays, and a great run game. The defense also limited SUU to just 7 points in the first-half. However, a haboob rolled in at he end of the second-half and caused a 2.5-hour weather delay that saw the game resume action at 11:30 pm local time. By the time the teams rolled back out, it was a very different atmosphere and game entirely. The passing game struggled mightily and the defense was allowing too many big plays. Penalties also mounted for the Sun Devils and it began to look like an upset was in the makings. Alas, the defense stepped up when it mattered most and the Sun Devils eked out a narrow 24-21 win.
