Now I don't want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I often planned to come to you (but was prevented until now) in order that I might have a fruitful ministry among you, just as I have had among the rest of the Gentiles (0:52) Ich will euch aber nicht verhalten, liebe Brüder, daß ich mir oft habe vorgesetzt, zu euch zu kommen (bin aber verhindert bisher), daß ich auch unter euch Frucht schaffte gleichwie unter andern Heiden. Pero no quiero, hermanos, que ignoréis que muchas veces me he propuesto ir a vosotros (y hasta ahora he sido impedido) para tener algún fruto también entre vosotros, así como entre las demás naciones (1:16)

I am obligated both to Greeks and barbarians, both to the wise and the foolish. Ich bin ein Schuldner der Griechen und der Ungriechen, der Weisen und der Unweisen. Tanto a griegos como a bárbaros, tanto a sabios como a ignorantes soy deudor (1:31) So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. Darum, soviel an mir ist, bin ich geneigt, auch euch zu Rom das Evangelium zu predigen. Así que, en cuanto a mí, pronto estoy para anunciaros el evangelio también a vosotros que estáis en Roma.

THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL LIVE BY FAITH (1:47) For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek (1:56) Denn ich schäme mich des Evangeliums von Christo nicht; denn es ist eine Kraft Gottes, die da selig macht alle, die daran glauben, die Juden vornehmlich und auch die Griechen (2:07) Porque no me avergüenzo del evangelio; pues es poder de Dios para salvación a todo aquel que cree, al judío primero y también al griego (2:14) For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith (2:22) Sintemal darin offenbart wird die Gerechtigkeit, die vor Gott gilt, welche kommt aus Glauben in Glauben; wie denn geschrieben steht: "Der Gerechte wird seines Glaubens leben." and was appointed to be the powerful Son of God according to the Spirit of holiness by the resurrection of the dead. (1:04) und kräftig erwiesen als ein Sohn Gottes nach dem Geist, der da heiligt, seit der Zeit, da er auferstanden ist von den Toten, Jesus Christus, unser HERR (1:16) y quien fue declarado Hijo de Dios con poder según el Espíritu de santidad por su resurrección de entre los muertos: Jesucristo nuestro Señor. DEAD TO SIN, ALIVE TO GOD

(0:05) What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? Was wollen wir hierzu sagen? Sollen wir denn in der Sünde beharren, auf daß die Gnade desto mächtiger werde? ¿Qué, pues, diremos? ¿Permaneceremos en el pecado para que abunde la gracia? (0:20)

Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Das sei ferne! Wie sollten wir in der Sünde wollen leben, der wir abgestorben sind? ¡De ninguna manera! Porque los que hemos muerto al pecado, ¿cómo viviremos todavía en él? (0:35) Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Wisset ihr nicht, daß alle, die wir in Jesus Christus getauft sind, die sind in seinen Tod getauft? (0:48) ¿Ignoráis que todos los que fuimos bautizados en Cristo Jesús fuimos bautizados en su muerte?

Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life. (1:02) So sind wir ja mit ihm begraben durch die Taufe in den Tod, auf daß, gleichwie Christus ist auferweckt von den Toten durch die Herrlichkeit des Vaters, also sollen auch wir in einem neuen Leben wandeln. Y sabemos que nuestro viejo hombre fue crucificado juntamente con él, para que el cuerpo del pecado sea destruido, a fin de que ya no seamos esclavos del pecado; (2:10) since a person who has died is freed from sin. Denn wer gestorben ist, der ist gerechtfertigt von der Sünde. porque el que ha muerto ha sido justificado del pecado.

(2:20) Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him, Sind wir aber mit Christo gestorben, so glauben wir, daß wir auch mit ihm leben werden, Si hemos muerto con Cristo, creemos que también viviremos con él. (2:34) because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over him. und wissen, daß Christus, von den Toten auferweckt, hinfort nicht stirbt; (2:45) der Tod wird hinfort nicht mehr über ihn herrschen. Sabemos que Cristo, una vez resucitado de entre los muertos, ya no muere; la muerte no se enseñorea más de él. (2:55) For the death he died, he died to sin once for all time; but the life he lives, he lives to God. Denn was er gestorben ist, das ist er der Sünde gestorben zu einem Mal; was er aber lebt, das lebt er Gott. (3:08) Porque en cuanto murió, para el pecado murió una vez por todas; pero en cuanto vive, vive para Dios. (3:14) So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. (3:27) Así también vosotros, considerad que estáis muertos para el pecado, pero que estáis vivos para Dios en Cristo Jesús.

DEAD TO SIN, ALIVE TO GOD: For the death he died, he died to sin once for all time; but the life he lives, he lives to God. Denn was er gestorben ist, das ist er der Sünde gestorben zu einem Mal; was er aber lebt, das lebt er Gott. Porque en cuanto murió, para el pecado murió una vez por todas; pero en cuanto vive, vive para Dios. (0:13)

So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Also auch ihr, haltet euch dafür, daß ihr der Sünde gestorben seid und lebt Gott in Christo Jesus, unserm HERRN. Así también vosotros, considerad que estáis muertos para el pecado, pero que estáis vivos para Dios en Cristo Jesús. (0:30) Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its desires. So lasset nun die Sünde nicht herrschen in eurem sterblichen Leibe, ihr Gehorsam zu leisten in seinen Lüsten. No reine, pues, el pecado en vuestro cuerpo mortal, de modo que obedezcáis a sus malos deseos. (0:48) And do not offer any parts of it to sin as weapons for unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness. Auch begebet nicht der Sünde eure Glieder zu Waffen der Ungerechtigkeit, sondern begebet euch selbst Gott, als die da aus den Toten lebendig sind, und eure Glieder Gott zu Waffen der Gerechtigkeit. Ni tampoco presentéis vuestros miembros al pecado, como instrumentos de injusticia; sino más bien presentaos a Dios como vivos de entre los muertos, y vuestros miembros a Dios como instrumentos de justicia. (1:22)

For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under the law but under grace. Denn die Sünde wird nicht herrschen können über euch, sintemal ihr nicht unter dem Gesetz seid, sondern unter der Gnade. Porque el pecado no se enseñoreará de vosotros, ya que no estáis bajo la ley, sino bajo la gracia.

SLAVES TO RIGHTEOUSNESS

(1:36) What then? Should we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Absolutely not! Wie nun? Sollen wir sündigen, dieweil wir nicht unter dem Gesetz, sondern unter der Gnade sind? (1:51) Das sei ferne! ¿Qué, pues? ¿Pecaremos, porque no estamos bajo la ley, sino bajo la gracia? ¡De ninguna manera!

Don't you know that if you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of that one you obey — either of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness? (2:07) Wisset ihr nicht: welchem ihr euch begebet zu Knechten in Gehorsam, des Knechte seid ihr, dem ihr gehorsam seid, es sei der Sünde zum Tode oder dem Gehorsam zur Gerechtigkeit? ¿No sabéis que cuando os ofrecéis a alguien para obedecerle como esclavos, sois esclavos del que obedecéis; ya sea del pecado para muerte o de la obediencia para justicia? (2:29) But thank God that, although you used to be slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching to which you were handed over, Gott sei aber gedankt, daß ihr Knechte der Sünde gewesen seid, aber nun gehorsam geworden von Herzen dem Vorbilde der Lehre, welchem ihr ergeben seid. (2:45)Pero gracias a Dios porque, aunque erais esclavos del pecado, habéis obedecido de corazón a aquella forma de enseñanza a la cual os habéis entregado. and having been set free from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. (2:58) Denn nun ihr frei geworden seid von der Sünde, seid ihr Knechte der Gerechtigkeit geworden/y una vez libertados del pecado, habéis sido hechos siervos de la justicia. (3:08) I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you offered the parts of yourselves as slaves to impurity, and to greater and greater lawlessness, so now offer them as slaves to righteousness, which results in sanctification/Ich muß menschlich davon reden um der Schwachheit willen eures Fleisches. Gleichwie ihr eure Glieder begeben habet zum Dienst der Unreinigkeit und von einer Ungerechtigkeit zur andern, (3:33) also begebet auch nun eure Glieder zum Dienst der Gerechtigkeit, daß sie heilig werden (4:25)

PEACE WITH GOD THROUGH FAITH | Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, (0:09) we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Nun wir denn sind gerecht geworden durch (0:15) den Glauben, so haben wir Frieden mit Gott durch unsern HERRN Jesus Christus, Justificados, pues, por la fe, (0:22) tenemos paz para con Dios por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, (0:27) We have also obtained access through him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. durch welchen wir auch den Zugang haben im Glauben zu dieser Gnade, (0:39) darin wir stehen, und rühmen uns der Hoffnung der zukünftigen Herrlichkeit, die Gott geben soll. por medio de quien también hemos obtenido acceso por la fe a (0:46) esta gracia en la cual estamos firmes, y nos gloriamos en la esperanza de la gloria de Dios. (0:52)

And not only that, but we also rejoice in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, (0:59) Nicht allein aber das, sondern wir rühmen uns auch der Trübsale, dieweil wir wissen, daß Trübsal Geduld bringt; Y no sólo esto, sino que también nos gloriamos en las tribulaciones, sabiendo que la tribulación produce perseverancia, (1:13)

endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope. Geduld aber bringt Erfahrung; (1:21) Erfahrung aber bringt Hoffnung; y la perseverancia produce carácter probado, y el carácter probado produce esperanza. (1:27) This hope will not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Hoffnung aber läßt nicht zu Schanden werden. Denn die Liebe Gottes ist ausgegossen in unser Herz durch den heiligen Geist, welcher uns gegeben ist. (1:45) Y la esperanza no acarrea vergüenza, porque el amor de Dios ha sido derramado en nuestros corazones por el Espíritu Santo que nos ha sido dado;

For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. Denn auch Christus, da wir noch schwach waren nach der Zeit, ist für uns Gottlose gestorben. porque aún siendo nosotros débiles, a su tiempo Cristo murió por los impíos. (2:07) For rarely will someone die for a just person — though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. Nun stirbt kaum jemand um eines Gerechten willen; um des Guten willen dürfte vielleicht jemand sterben. Difícilmente muere alguno por un justo. Con todo, podría ser que alguno osara morir por el bueno.

But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Darum preiset Gott seine Liebe gegen uns, daß Christus für uns gestorben ist, da wir noch Sünder waren. Pero Dios demuestra su amor para con nosotros, en que siendo aún pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros. How much more then, since we have now been declared righteous by his blood, will we be saved through him from wrath. (2:50) So werden wir ja viel mehr durch ihn bewahrt werden vor dem Zorn, nachdem wir durch sein Blut gerecht geworden sind. Luego, siendo ya justificados por su sangre, cuánto más por medio de él seremos salvos de la ira. (3:03) For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. Denn so wir Gott versöhnt sind durch den Tod seines Sohnes, da wir noch Feinde waren, viel mehr werden wir selig werden durch sein Leben, so wir nun versöhnt sind. Porque si, cuando éramos enemigos, fuimos reconciliados con Dios por la muerte de su Hijo, cuánto más, ya reconciliados, seremos salvos por su vida. (3:33) And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received this reconciliation.

What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? Was sagen wir denn von unserm Vater Abraham, daß er gefunden habe nach dem Fleisch? ¿Qué diremos, pues, que ha encontrado Abraham, nuestro progenitor según la carne? (00:22)

If Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about — but not before God. Das sagen wir: Ist Abraham durch die Werke gerecht, so hat er wohl Ruhm, aber nicht vor Gott. Porque si Abraham fue justificado por las obras, tiene de qué gloriarse, pero no delante de Dios. (0:39)

For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness. Was sagt denn die Schrift? "Abraham hat Gott geglaubt, und das ist ihm zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet." Pues ¿qué dice la Escritura? Y creyó Abraham a Dios, y le fue contado por justicia.

Now to the one who works, pay is not credited as a gift, but as something owed. Dem aber, der mit Werken umgeht, wird der Lohn nicht aus Gnade zugerechnet, sondern aus Pflicht. Al que obra, no se le considera el salario como gracia, sino como obligación. (1:12) But to the one who does not work, but believes on him who declares the ungodly to be righteous, his faith is credited for righteousness. Dem aber, der nicht mit Werken umgeht, glaubt aber an den, der die Gottlosen gerecht macht, dem wird sein Glaube gerechnet zur Gerechtigkeit. (1:35) Just as David also speaks of the blessing of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: Nach welcher Weise auch David sagt, daß die Seligkeit sei allein des Menschen, welchem Gott zurechnet die Gerechtigkeit ohne Zutun der Werke, da er spricht: De igual manera, David también proclama la felicidad del hombre a quien Dios confiere justicia sin obras,

Blessed are those whose lawless acts are forgiven and whose sins are covered. "Selig sind die, welchen ihre Ungerechtigkeiten vergeben sind und welchen ihre Sünden bedeckt sind! diciendo: (2:08) Bienaventurados aquellos cuyas iniquidades son perdonadas, y cuyos pecados son cubiertos.

Blessed is the person the Lord will never charge with sin. Selig ist der Mann, welchem Gott die Sünde nicht zurechnet!" Bienaventurado el hombre a quien el Señor jamás le tomará en cuenta su pecado.

Is this blessing only for the circumcised, then? Or is it also for the uncircumcised? For we say, Faith was credited to Abraham for righteousness. Nun diese Seligkeit, geht sie über die Beschnittenen oder auch über die Unbeschnittenen? (2:32) Wir müssen ja sagen, daß Abraham sei sein Glaube zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet. Luego, ¿es esta felicidad solamente para los de la circuncisión, o también es para los de la incircuncisión? Pues decimos: A Abraham le fue contada su fe por justicia.

In what way then was it credited — while he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? It was not while he was circumcised, but uncircumcised. Wie ist er ihm denn zugerechnet? Als er beschnitten oder als er unbeschnitten war? Nicht, als er beschnitten, sondern als er unbeschnitten war. (3:09) ¿Cómo le fue contada? ¿Estando él circuncidado o incircunciso? No fue en la circuncisión, sino en la incircuncisión. And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while still uncircumcised. This was to make him the father of all who believe but are not circumcised, so that righteousness may be credited to them also. Das Zeichen der Beschneidung empfing er zum Siegel der Gerechtigkeit des Glaubens, welchen er hatte, als er noch nicht beschnitten war, auf daß er würde ein Vater aller, die da glauben und nicht beschnitten sind, daß ihnen solches auch gerechnet werde zur Gerechtigkeit; Él recibió la señal de la circuncisión como sello de la justicia de la fe que tenía estando aún incircunciso, para que fuese padre de todos los creyentes no circuncidados--para que también a ellos les fuera conferida la justicia (4:29) For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the world was not through the law,but… (7:25)

(00:28) The righteousness of God is through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe, since there is no distinction. Ich sage aber von solcher Gerechtigkeit vor Gott, die da kommt durch den Glauben an Jesum Christum zu allen und auf alle, die da glauben. Ésta es la justicia de Dios por medio de la fe en Jesucristo para todos los que creen. Pues no hay distinción;

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Denn es ist hier kein Unterschied: sie sind allzumal Sünder und mangeln des Ruhmes, den sie bei Gott haben sollten, porque todos pecaron y no alcanzan la gloria de Dios,

They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. und werden ohne Verdienst gerecht aus seiner Gnade durch die Erlösung, so durch Jesum Christum geschehen ist, siendo justificados gratuitamente por su gracia, mediante la redención que es en Cristo Jesús.

God presented him as an atoning sacrifice in his blood, received through faith, to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his restraint God passed over the sins previously committed. welchen Gott hat vorgestellt zu einem Gnadenstuhl durch den Glauben in seinem Blut, damit er die Gerechtigkeit, die vor ihm gilt, darbiete in dem, daß er Sünde vergibt, welche bisher geblieben war unter göttlicher Geduld; Como demostración de su justicia, Dios le ha puesto a él como expiación por la fe en su sangre, a causa del perdón de los pecados pasados, en la paciencia de Dios,

God presented him to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so that he would be righteous and declare righteous the one who has faith in Jesus. auf daß er zu diesen Zeiten darböte die Gerechtigkeit, die vor ihm gilt; auf daß er allein gerecht sei und gerecht mache den, der da ist des Glaubens an Jesum. con el propósito de manifestar su justicia en el tiempo presente; para que él sea justo y a la vez justificador del que tiene fe en Jesús. (1:57) Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By one of works? No, on the contrary, by a law of faith. Wo bleibt nun der Ruhm? Er ist ausgeschlossen. Durch das Gesetz? Durch der Werke Gesetz? Nicht also, sondern durch des Glaubens Gesetz. ¿Dónde, pues, está la jactancia? Está excluida. ¿Por qué clase de ley? ¿Por la de las obras? ¡Jamás! Más bien, por la ley de la fe.

For we conclude that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. So halten wir nun dafür, daß der Mensch gerecht werde ohne des Gesetzes Werke, allein durch den Glauben. Así que consideramos que el hombre es justificado por la fe, sin las obras de la ley.

Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, Oder ist Gott allein der Juden Gott? Ist er nicht auch der Heiden Gott? Ja freilich, auch der Heiden Gott. ¿Es Dios solamente Dios de los judíos? ¿No lo es también de los gentiles? ¡Por supuesto! También lo es de los gentiles.

since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. Sintemal es ist ein einiger Gott, der da gerecht macht die Beschnittenen aus dem Glauben und die Unbeschnittenen durch den Glauben. Porque hay un solo Dios, quien justificará por la fe a los de la circuncisión, y mediante la fe a los de la incircuncisión.

(00:04) So what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Was haben denn die Juden für Vorteil, oder was nützt die Beschneidung? ¿Qué ventaja tiene, pues, el judío? ¿O qué beneficio hay en la circuncisión?

Considerable in every way. First, they were entrusted with the very words of God. Fürwahr sehr viel. Zum ersten: ihnen ist vertraut, was Gott geredet hat. Mucho, en todo sentido. Primeramente, que las palabras de Dios les han sido confiadas.

What then? If some were unfaithful, will their unfaithfulness nullify God's faithfulness? Daß aber etliche nicht daran glauben, was liegt daran? Sollte ihr Unglaube Gottes Glauben aufheben? ¿Qué, pues, si algunos de ellos han sido infieles? ¿Acaso podrá la infidelidad de ellos invalidar la fidelidad de Dios?

Absolutely not! Let God be true, even though everyone is a liar, as it is written: That you may be justified in your words and triumph when you judge. Das sei ferne! Es bleibe vielmehr also, daß Gott sei wahrhaftig und alle Menschen Lügner; wie geschrieben steht: "Auf daß du gerecht seist in deinen Worten und überwindest, wenn du gerichtet wirst." ¡De ninguna manera! Antes bien, sea Dios veraz, aunque todo hombre sea mentiroso, como está escrito: para que seas justificado en tus palabras y venzas cuando seas juzgado.

But if our unrighteousness highlights God's righteousness, what are we to say? I am using a human argument: Is God unrighteous to inflict wrath? Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are subject to the law, so that every mouth may be shut and the whole world may become subject to God's judgment. Wir wissen aber, daß, was das Gesetz sagt, das sagt es denen, die unter dem Gesetz sind, auf daß aller Mund verstopft werde und alle Welt Gott schuldig sei; Pero sabemos que todo lo que dice la ley, lo dice a los que están bajo la ley, para que toda boca se cierre, y todo el mundo esté bajo juicio ante Dios.

For no one will be justified in his sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law. darum daß kein Fleisch durch des Gesetzes Werke vor ihm gerecht sein kann; denn durch das Gesetz kommt Erkenntnis der Sünde. Porque por las obras de la ley nadie será justificado delante de él; pues por medio de la ley viene el reconocimiento del pecado.

But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, attested by the Law and the Prophets. Nun aber ist ohne Zutun des Gesetzes die Gerechtigkeit, die vor Gott gilt, offenbart und bezeugt durch das Gesetz und die Propheten. Pero ahora, aparte de la ley, se ha manifestado la justicia de Dios atestiguada por la Ley y los Profetas. vv22-23
