Lesson 57 The Elephant and the Whale

The biggest and strongest animal on land is the elephant. The largest and heaviest animal in the sea is the whale. It's also the biggest eater in the world. It eats a ton of food a day. It looks like a fish, but it is really a mammal. Although the elephant and the whale are both mammals, they are indeed very different.

Lesson 56 I Want the Cheaper One

Customer : Why is this watch more expensive than that one?
Salesgirl : Because its brand name is more famous.
Customer : Is it more reliable?
Salesgirl : No. Not really.
Customer : Then, I want the cheaper one.

我要买那只便宜的手表

顾 客：它比较可靠吗?

29. Friday the 13th

A: Today is Friday the thirteenth.

B: That's a bad day.

A: It's supposed to be unlucky.

B: You're supposed to stay home all day.

A: That's what I do.

B: My friend stayed in a hotel on Friday the thirteenth.

A: That was a mistake.

B: He stayed on the thirteenth floor.

A: What happened?

B: Someone stole his laptop.

A: He was asking for it.

B: He learned his lesson. He's home today.

29. 13号星期五

今天是13号星期五。

真是个坏日子。

这一天应该是很不幸的。

你应该整天待在家里。

我就是这么做的。

我有个朋友在13号星期五住旅馆去了。

那是个错误。

他还住在13楼。

发生什么了？

有人偷了他的笔记本。

他自找的。

他已经吸取教训了。所以他今天在家。

注:

13”这个数字被西方人视为不祥的象征。

据说它源于宗教典故：出卖耶稣的犹大是耶稣的第十三个弟子；还有种说法，只要到每月的13日这一天，12个巫婆(witch)都要举行狂欢夜会，第13个魔鬼撒旦就会在夜会高潮时出现，给人们带来灾难。因此，西方人不仅忌讳“13”日，也忌讳有“13”数字。，于是人们对“13”心生厌恶。又由于耶稣受难在星期五，因此西方人在既是13号又是星期五的那一天一般不举行活动。

（《13号星期五》是美国的恐怖、惊悚系列电影，主要讲述少女惠特妮·米勒及其男友麦克等一行五人前往水晶湖森林游玩，快乐的假期很快为血腥杀戮所取代，躲藏在暗处的杀人魔王杰森突然出现，将青年男女们逐一杀害）

81. Going to the Dentist 去看牙医

Adrian Gonzalez was very tall. He also had huge muscles. It was clear he was a big strong man. However, this big strong man had a big fear. He was scared of the dentist.

阿德里安冈萨雷斯长得很高，而且肌肉很发达，很明显他是个强壮的大个子。然而，这个强壮的大个子有一样很怕的东西，那就是牙医。

He had avoided the dentist for ten years. Adrian wanted to keep avoiding it for the rest of his life. Unfortunately, his wisdom teeth were killing him. Adrian's wife was tired of hearing him complaining. "That's it!" she said. "You're facing your fear tomorrow!"

他已经逃避牙医十年了，阿德里安打算一辈子都躲着牙医。不幸的是，他的智齿让他疼得要命。阿德里安的妻子厌倦了听他抱怨，“行了！”她说，“你明天必须得去面对你的恐惧！”

It took 20 minutes to get Adrian to sit on the dentist chair. However, Adrian doesn't remember anything after that. He had slept through his entire appointment. He then pretended not to remember crying the whole way to the clinic.

阿德里安花了20分钟才肯坐上牙医的椅子，但是那之后的事阿德里安就完全不记得了。整个预诊中他都是睡过去的，之后他就假装不记得自己是一直哭着去诊所的。
