6. Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained

第6课 不入虎穴，安得虎子
Lisa and Bill are talking about their future. (L = Lisa; B = Bill)
莉莎和比尔聊到他们的未来。
What's your goal in life, Bill?

To fly in the sky and feel as free as a bird.

That's easy.

What do you mean?

Go bungee jumping.

You must be kidding. It's too dangerous.
你一定在说笑。那太危险了。
Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
呃，不入虎穴，焉得虎子（没有冒险，就没有收获）。

5. Bungee Jumping 蹦极

Bungee jumping looks like fun.
蹦极看起来蛮好玩的。
It makes me nervous just to watch someone do it.
光是看别人做这件事就会让我紧张。
It certainly takes a lot of guts to jump one thousand feet above the water with only a rope tied to your legs.
双腿只用一条绳索绑着，从水面上一千尺的高度跳下的确需要很大的胆量。
It scares me just to think about it.
光是想到这点就够让我害怕的了。
However, it is something I really want to do one day.
可是，这是我总有一天真的想做的事。
Some people think I'm crazy.
有些人认我疯了。
They say to jump is foolish enough,
他们说去跳就已经够蠢了，
but to have to pay for it is madness.
而还要付钱则不啻为疯狂的行为。
I don't agree.
我并不同意。
For me, to live a short and exciting life is far better than to live a long and boring one.
对我来说，过个短暂而刺激的生比过漫长却无聊的日子好得多。

4. He Who Hesitates Is Lost

第4课 迟疑者将丧失良机
Mike is in Vienna with his girlfriend Daisy. (M=Mike; D=Daisy)
麦克和他的女朋友黛西现在正在维也纳。
Are you having a good time, Daisy?
你玩得愉快吗，黛西？
Are you kidding? I'm having the time of my life.
开玩笑！我正在享受我一生最快乐的时光。
I loved the concerts.
我爱死那些演奏会了。
Concert going is fantastic but what else can we do?
去听演奏会固然很棒，但是我们还可以做些什么呢？
Biking along the banks of the river Danube could be fun.
沿着多瑙河河岸骑自行车应该蛮好玩的。
It sounds like a great idea!
这个主意听起来非常不错！
Let's do it then.
那我们快去吧。
You're right. As they say, "He who hesitates is lost."

13. Afraid to Cry 害怕哭泣

Dean was known as the tough guy at school. He always wore tight shirts that showed off his muscles. He always pushed the skinny kids at school. He always treated the teachers like they didn't matter. He never did his homework. He got in a lot of fights. People were afraid of him, and Dean loved it.

Dean's world turned upside down when his brother passed away. He still went to class. His English teacher was talking about Shakespeare, whom Dean's brother admired. Hearing about Shakespeare reminded Dean of his own brother. His eyes started to water. He didn't want anyone to see him cry. He got up from his desk. "Dean, you can't get up while I am teaching," Mr. Chen said.

Everyone stared at Dean. Everyone could see the tears in his eyes. They laughed at him. Dean ran out of the classroom. Mr. Chen followed him and sat down with him. "Dean, it's okay to cry. Something tragic happened. Go ahead and cry." Dean put his head on Mr. Chen's shoulder and cried out loud. It was the first time he cried in front of someone. It was the first time he didn't act tough.
