3. The City of Song 音乐之都

Listening to music is the favorite pastime of many people all over the world.
听音乐是全世界许多人最喜爱的消遣。
This is especially true for people living in Vienna, the city of song.
这对生活在音乐之都的维也纳人民来说更是贴切。
Being the home of Mozart, this city is the birthplace of classical music and the waltz.
这个城市不但是莫札特的故乡，也是古典音乐和华尔兹舞曲的发源地。
Music fills the air in Vienna.
音乐缭绕于整个维也纳。
Going to public concerts is often free of charge.
欣赏公开的演奏会通常都是免费的。
And don&`&t forget, Vienna is also home to the world famous Vienna Boys&`& Choir.

No wonder people say Austria is always alive with the sound of music.

Marilyn：What are you doing'?

Richard：I think I've got them.Marilyn; You think you've got what?

Richard：Performing arts - performing arts centers. I think I've got them all, but I'm not sure.



Marilyn：[ She looks at the photographs. ] I think you have got it, Richard. Lincoln Center, 2 home of the Metropolitan Opera3, the New York City Ballet4, the New York Philharmonic5.

Richard：Shubert Alley6 center of the theater on Broadway7.

Marilyn：And Carnegie Hall8. And the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts9 in Washington.10.

Richard：And the Music Center in Los Angeles11. And the others. I do have it all.

Marilyn：You have been working on this for some time12, Richard. I'm glad you feel you've finally put it all together13 . What now?

Richard：Now for the hard part.

Marilyn; Oh, you think you're going to have a hard time getting the album published14?

Richard：Well, it won't be easy,

Marilyn：So, what do you think you're going to do?

Richard：Does the name Harvery Carlson ring a bell15

Marilyn：Oh, yes! Harvey Carlson! I remember.

Richard：He said I should call him. He's the publisher ofthe Carlson Publishing Company. He said they need a new book of photographs, and he really liked my concept16.

Marilyn：So, why don't you call him in the morning?

Richard：Do you think I have enough to show him?

Marilyn：I've been through every section17 with you, Richard. It's quite complete. And now that18 you're satisfied with the performing arts sec . tion, I think you should show it to Mr. Carlson.

Richard：You're right my Family Album , U. S. A . feelsright. I'll call in the morning and set up an appointment19 to see him.

Marilyn：He's going to love your work, [ She kisses him . ] Come on. Let's get some sleep.

The next morning. Richard and Marilyn are speaking in thekitchen.

Richard：Is it too early to call Mr. Carlson?

Marilyn：[She looks at the clock.] Seven after nine?

No. I'm sure he's in his office.

Richard：His number is five, five, five, seven, five, three, two. [ He dials.]. Five, five, five, seven, five, three, two. Hello. Mr. Carlson, please.

Receptionist：Mr. Carlson is busy at the moment. May I helpyou?

Richard：I'd like to make an appointment with him.

Receptionist：And your name is...

Richard：My name is Richard Stewart. He told me tocall him about my project20, Family Album., U. S.A.

Receptionist：One moment, please

Marilyn：What's going on?

Richard：I guess they're trying to set up an appointmentfor me.

Receptionist：Mr. Stewart, I just spoke to Mr Carlson. Hewould like to see you. But the only time he's available this week is tomorrow morning at teno'clock.

Richard：Thanks. Thanks a lot. Good-bye. [He hangsup the phone and dances with Marilyn.]Well, it's done. Tomorrow morning at a publisher's office.

Marilyn：Oh, it's so exciting, isn't it, Richard?Richard：Well, finally a publisher will see my work.[They hug.]

112. Not Going to Church 不再去教堂

Chris has been going to church every Sunday since he was four years old. His parents were very religious and wanted Chris to follow in their footsteps. His dad was a pastor, and his mom was a choir leader. Chris always felt like he was in the middle. He didn't particularly love or hate Christianity.

Chris learned about other religions in his history class. He learned about Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and more. After learning about other religions, Chris wanted to convert to Buddhism. He felt like he could relate to it better. One Sunday, he told his parents he was not going to church. They were shocked and angry. They told him that if he did not go to church, they would take away all electronics from him. Chris was okay with that. He gave his parents his cell phone, video game console, and laptop.

When his parents came back from church, they wanted to have a long conversation with Chris. Chris told them why he didn't want to go to church anymore. He explained what Buddhism was, and why he wanted to convert. His parents tried to convince him that Christianity was better. It was useless. Chris made his decision.
