The ups and downs of US arms deliveries to Israel is not new. It’s been going on for over 50 years as the US became Israel’s main weapons supplier. The latest conflagration involves, as far as we know, shipments of 2,000 pound and 500 pound bombs with JDAM kits (joint Direct Attack Munitions) that provide dumb bombs with precision guidance.  To give us some insight into this we turned to Lenny Ben David, director of American Institute at the Jerusalem Center for Foreign Affairs, and former deputy Israeli ambassador to Washington. The High Court of Justice has instructed the IDF to begin drafting ultra-Orthodox men. Dr. Shuki Friedman, vice president of the Jewish People Policy Institute and professor of law at the Peres academic center, said that at least 5,000 are expected to join the army this year, but that is a fraction of the 66,000 eligible for service in the ultra-Orthodox community. But, he said, they would not participate without an enforcement of the law. He told reporter Arieh O’Sullivan that the debate over the draft exemption of haredi youth from military service was dramatically changed since the war against Hamas broke out. (photo: Flash90)
