Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/VenturedTrails)In this episode of Kick Back with VenturedTrails, Casey and Brittney will talk about unexpected expenses that come up while you're traveling. Hear all about what types of fees arise, how to avoid them, and their best tips for traveling while still being money cautious.
Cell phone service or mobile internet
[2:52]
You might not have it where you are. Sometimes you have to pay another fee or an additional fee when you are needing that service.
Camping out
[5:36]
Make sure you're reading that fine print wherever you are to make sure you're not getting any of those extra fees because they will throw them in anywhere. You'll get a parking fee, a spot fee, depending on what it is or where you're parking. Remember that not every place that you park is treated the same.
Maintenance
[7:22]
Make sure that you're safe. you're prepared, but you also have that expense to be able to fix that. You never know what's gonna happen. It could be a blown tire or it could be overheating. You could run out of gas or forgot to change your oil or you have an oil leak.
Activity fees
[10:10]
We want to make sure we're saving money for those activities. But they also sneak in fees while we’re doing those activities.
[11:25]
You got to be real careful. Don't be afraid to call them up and ask them to verify that this is what you're really getting for your dollar. Sometimes, activity fees can be hefty and change from area to area.
How to avoid unnecessary fees
[14:15]
● Do your research. It seems easy but it's probably the most important.
● Look at reviews. Find out exactly what it will cost you each and every day. It doesn't hurt to call the places and find out if they have any hidden fees.
● Leave nothing to surprise. Find out what stores are nearby.
● Collect or make a little ornament about something you find there.
● Have an emergency fund.
● Give yourself a designated budget for each day or week of your trip and move according to that.
● Try to pre-purchase it before you go.
● Avoid overly expensive campgrounds.
● Explore free camping activities.
● Find your meals ahead of time.

In this episode of Kick Back with VenturedTrails, Casey and Brittney will talk about some cool climate activities and what you might have to change when you camp in the fall or the winter.
Things that you thought about beforehand when planning the trip
[2:50]
Your packing looked a little different than what you do in the summer hands.
Hiking in the fall
[4:57]
Especially in the Pacific Northwest, there are still days where it's not pouring down rain. So it's something you could still do. There's a lot of cool hikes that are even linear, that are in the fall in the wintertime than in the summertime because in the summertime it kind of goes away. But your leaves are coming. It's falling. So it's prettier.
Packing for a camping trip
[6:15]
Packing for a camping trip can be a tedious and frustrating process. When you're packing, make sure you have a checklist so that you're packing one item at a time and that you're not forgetting. When you're planning for a winter camping trip, you need to watch your limited space.
[8:20]
If you have one of those solar electric charging things then you are able to recharge the battery at night. When you're getting ready to camp, you need to have a tent so you can sleep in something. It's really important to make sure that your tent can withstand all the seasons. It cannot be just a summer tent. It needs to be something that will keep the heat inside and the snow out.
[9:34]
You want to make sure that your sleeping bag is gonna protect you when your temperatures are dropping around you and that you don't get freezing cold throughout the night.
[11:40]
You want to make sure that you're getting the best quality stuff so that you're staying warm because you don't want to wake up with hypothermia. Make sure that you put in extra scarves and check out the merino wool, see what you can find on it so you can get some good gloves and socks.
Snowshoeing
[15:39]
They're easy to rent and they're not too expensive. Snowshoeing practically allows you to hike. The snowshoe itself makes it where you're not sinking into the snow. It helps be able to see some of the forests and the trails that you do love that you don't get to see in the wintertime, helps you see it in a different view.
Sledding
[19:03]
Everyone enjoys sledding. It's great and you can't die. It's just exhausting.
Snowmobiling or Snow machining
[19:47]
This one costs more money than either going on a sled or renting snowshoes, but they are a lot of fun because most campers don't own one. You can bring one or you can rent one.

Instead, water activities for adults, people who are past a common level of swimming, meaning you don't want to just go for a swim. Here are some of the best ways to enjoy the water.
Kayaking
[02:17]
There's inflatable kayaks, there’s sit on top kayaks, there's internal kayaks, there's fishing kayaks, combinations of the two. There are portable ones, probably the size of a suitcase.
[03:49]
Just remember to bring your safety equipment. But they have a backpack that those kayaks can fit into. So you literally have it on your back and you could just throw your paddles on there and have your life jacket hanging on the outside.
First time Kayaking
[04:35]
Brittney says the first time they went kayaking was a nightmare. They went with it and brought their six-year-old son with them in the middle of a three-person kayak.
Cool things about Kayaking
[07:26]
You get a different view of things like when the birds are coming down. You're seeing them go into the water where you wouldn't normally see that.
Paddle Boarding
[10:03]
It's a great workout for your core, balance, and swimming. A paddleboard is similar to a surfboard but you stand on it and you paddle. If you're not a pro surfer and you are willing to try out surfing or you don't have a place to go surfing, paddle boarding is a great calm alternative to that.
[11:20]
You can either sit down or stand up on them. It's offset and then works your way to standing up and balancing. You're supposed to sit on your knees and try it and then bring yourself up to it.
Snorkeling
[12:54]
Brittney went snorkeling in Hawaii and she says that it is something she’ll never forget. You got to see fish and the coral in there. If you're not scuba certified or don't love being so many feet underwater, snorkeling is a great alternative.
The best part of these activities
[17:57]
The best part about most of these activities is the little equipment you actually need to bring with you on the trip. Some of them can be rented, which opens up more packing space for you.
[19:12]
Make sure that you have your safety gear with you when you go kayaking or when you're in the water no matter what, make sure you're safe.
[19:32]
Remember that even though it's really hot outside, a lot of the time the water’s really cold. And that can be a real big safety hazard.

VenturedTrailsIn this episode of Kick Back with VenturedTrails, Casey and Brittney will talk about things you should know before planning to go on a trip, things to expect, packing, organizing, and pivoting during unexpected situations.
Planning a Trip
[02:40]
Planning a trip is not easy and takes a long time. To shorten things, have a checklist on what you usually do when you plan out your trip.
Reminiscing
[05:46]
Brittney remembered when they drove to the cabin and realized the key was forgotten 20 minutes away before arriving. That’s why having checklists are great, and you can get one for free by subscribing to the newsletter!
Planning Destinations
[10:02]
When you’re going through towns, check it online. And if you can’t find one, then make one! Start a blog and write about the things you learned in that area because people are interested. We all have our perspectives, and you want to share that with your audience.
[10:30]
If you go to a local store, ask them if there is anything they can recommend. Locals have great information, and there are places that are not necessarily found online that are best known by locals—a hidden gem.
Staying in a Hotel
[13:14]
There are also times when you book in hotels days in advance.. Because when you save up, that’s more money
Don't be afraid to ask for a discount.
Planning for Activities and Clothing
[16:14]
What do you need to bring? Will you be swimming, staying inside, or be active and go hiking? When will you do these things? By knowing these beforehand, you can then make a checklist for it.
Planning for People
[19:09]
Who are going with you? How many people are going to be in the car? Do you have enough room for the luggage? Who will cook, and what will you be cooking with? Will you be eating outside?
[20:17]
Brittney heavily emphasized to NEVER FORGET bringing the FIRST-AID KIT. Many people go on a trip without one, and you don’t want to be like them.
Pivoting
[22:20]
Casey believes that although you can plan things out, the part of growing is to go with the flow and adapt when you do things that are not planned. Experiencing whether it will flop or decided something amazing.
[23:30]
Have fun as much as you can. But if you plan on going on excursions, ensure that you have tickets. And for anything else you did not, go with the flow.
Experiences, Memories, and Expectations
[25:14]
Do things that everyone can do together. Experiences are better than gifts, especially when you shared that unforgettable experience with the people you travel with.

Today we will talk about true crime mysteries that take place outdoors, hiking, forest, camping trips, and anything else related to traveling. Casey and Brittney will tell you the story Kris and Lisanne, the two hikers gone missing on a hike in Panama.
Hiking
[2:14]
Most of the outdoor activities even involve hiking. You need to make sure you have all the proper supplies before making it too far away from where you started. Hiking alone or with a group, foliage and trees often block your sight paths, and you might not see who else is around you until you're right next to each other.
Panama
[3:21]
Panama is a country located in Central America, known as the bridge connecting North and South America. The country sees hikers visiting at nearly all times of the year for day trips, overnight camping and even day-long adventures.
Panama Trails
[4:09]
El Pianista is a 4.9-mile hiking trail near Bocat district in Panama. It features narrow canyon-like destinations and forests along the way to visit. M
Kris And Lisanne
[5:32]
Lisanne and Kris were roommates in the Netherlands for two years. The pair had just moved into their first dorm together, Amersfoort, when they decided to move out. Lisanne was 22 at the time, young, aspiring and a passionate volleyball player while Kris was 21 and a creative soul.
Kris And Lisanne arrived in Panama.
[9:15]
Kris and Lisanne arrived in Panama on March 15, excited for their six-week trip to tour the country. They stayed with a family member while traveling Paquette and wanted to see the local children and volunteer their time and skills. T
Kris And Lisanne disappearance.
[9:57]
Kris and Lisanne were hiking alone on April 1 when they went missing. They had planned to go walking the pianist trail they had researched before. No one has ever claimed to see either of the women again. Their family is still trying to find out what happened to them. Police have not released any new information about their disappearance.
[12:02]
Sanne and her friend were supposed to go on a day trip but didn't show up. Her family and friends started frantically searching for them after they didn't come home. Sanne's mother says she was worried because she had stopped sending text messages and updates.
Kris And Lisanne Belongings
[15:03]
A local woman found a backpack belonging to one of the girls, Lisanne, near a riverbank ten weeks after her disappearance. Police were able to identify this backpack as belonging to Lisanne. This was the bag she had taken her belongings, and, on their hike, the local woman said she'd found the pack by a riverbank.
[17:07]
Kris and Lisanne's cell phones have been turned on numerous times since they went missing on April 2. Police have no leads about where the girls were for the days following their disappearance. Their parents are asking for the public's help in finding out what happened to them.
The Camera
[19:26]
They found a digital camera with more than 500 photos from the trip of Kris and Lisanne. The date and time of all images are automatically logged on the camera, so investigators can see where the girls were at one point during their trip.
The Remains
[23:25]
Two months after discovering the backpack and investigating evidence found inside bones and clothing, two bones were identified as Kris's remains, and 33 total were found scattered around the area. So no one knows what happened to either hiker or when.
