  • #339 The Tale of Austin Metcalf & Karmelo Anthony Part 2 [Vacation Series]

What began as an ordinary high school track meet would end with two families changed forever, two young lives lost in profoundly different ways, and a few terrible seconds that would become the subject of arguments far beyond the stadium where they happened.

Austin Metcalf was 17 years old. He came to the meet to compete, to spend the day with teammates and friends, and eventually to go home. He never did.

Karmelo Anthony was 17 years old too. He arrived at that same stadium with an entire adulthood still ahead of him. Before the day was over, his name would become inseparable from Austin’s, and the trajectory of his life would change forever.

At the center of this case is an encounter that initially seemed almost absurdly insignificant: a disagreement over where someone was sitting. Yet within minutes, Austin was mortally wounded, his twin brother was desperately trying to save him, and Karmelo was being taken into custody.

But the story that followed would become much larger than those few moments.  Questions about self-defense, responsibility, race, juvenile justice, social media, fundraising, misinformation, and the behavior of people surrounding both teenagers would transform a local tragedy into a case debated by millions of strangers. Somewhere underneath all of that noise, however, remained something much simpler and infinitely sadder.

    Austin Metcalf was dead.

And another 17-year-old boy had just begun losing the life he once expected to have.

In Episode 338, Part One of The Tale of Austin Metcalf and Karmelo Anthony, we go back to the beginning, before the headlines, before the internet chose sides, and before anyone knew how far the consequences of one encounter at a high school stadium would reach.

Because this is ultimately the story of two teenagers who walked into the same stadium that morning.  And neither of them would ever truly come home.

  • #337 The Tale of D4VD: The Death, Degradation, & Dismemberment of Celeste Rivas Hernandez [Part 2]

WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS GRAPHIC DETAILS INVOLVING THE SEXUAL ABUSE, MURDER AND MUTILATION OF A CHILD; LISTENER DISCRETION IS STRONGLY ADVISED... On September 5, 2025, a seemingly abandoned Tesla was towed from an affluent neighborhood in the Hollywood Hills.  Within a couple days, tow yard employees couldn't get past the outrageously pungent odor emanating from the Tesla, along with colonies of insects making themselves at home in and around it.  The workers couldn't be sure what the smell was, but they knew.  The LAPD was contacted, the smell was reported and when officers arrived and opened the front end cargo area of the vehicle, they discovered two body bags containing dismembered human remains.  Whose remains were these?  Who did this Tesla belong to?  And how did all this end up in a tow yard in Hollywood?  This is the first part of a two part series on the 2025 murder of 14 year old Celeste Rivas Hernandez.

  • #335 The 1981 Disappearance of Barbara Louise Cotton [Part 4]

WARNING: THIS 4 PART SERIES INCLUDES SOME SENSITIVE DETAILS INVOLVING CHILD ABUSE AND ANIMAL CRUELTY.

On April 11, 1981, 15-year-old Barbara "Barb" Cotton went out for the evening. Depending on who you ask, she was reportedly having dinner with a friend, a boyfriend, her mother, or some combination of the three. What is certain is that Barb never returned home. She was never seen or heard from again.

Over the decades, several persons of interest have emerged, including Barb's own brother, Frank. Yet despite years of investigation, countless questions, and a family still searching for answers, no one has been able to definitively explain what happened to Barb.

Today, we're exploring a new possibility involving a different person of interest, someone who has never been seriously examined as a potential suspect. By following the small details, taking a closer look at the family dynamics, and examining who truly had the means, motive, and opportunity, we're going to revisit one of North Dakota's most enduring mysteries and ask whether the answer may have been hiding in plain sight all along.

  • #332 The 1981 Disappearance of Barbara Louise Cotton [Part 1]

  • #331 The Tale of Reading Between the B*llshit: The Ridiculous Interrogation of Rebecca Rogers Pt. 5 [Vacation Series]

In August of 2013, Rebecca Rogers shot and killed her husband of 14 years, Jason, three times — twice in the back and once in the head — but don’t worry, according to Rebecca, this was all somehow self-defense.  And apparently enough people bought that explanation, because between the public support and what feels like a pretty surface-level investigation, Rebecca eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter and served less than two years in prison.  Less than two years.  For shooting a man three times.  Incredible.
At first glance, the case seems pretty open-and-shut…until you sit down and actually listen to her interrogation.  Because once I heard Rebecca tell her absolutely “harrowing” tale herself, I walked away thinking this woman didn’t get away with manslaughter — she got away with murder.
And weirdly, there’s barely any information out there about this case.  It never got the full Dateline treatment, no dramatic 20/20 special, no ominous narrator standing in front of a cornfield talking about “small town secrets.”  Somehow this one just quietly drifted off into obscurity.
We’re also not going to be listening to the interrogation itself in these episodes.  But honestly, we don’t even need to.  There is SO much to unpack in the things Rebecca says — the contradictions, the reactions, the storytelling choices, all of it — that, to me, point to this being way more than a simple manslaughter case.  The more she talks, the less believable it becomes.
    To me, this was murder.
