The Killafornia Dreaming Podcast

WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS ANNOYING RECORDED JAILHOUSE CALLS THAT MAY BE CRINGE-INDUCING FOR SOME LISTENERS...CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED...      On the evening of August 31, 2012, 42 year old Yancy Noll, a wine sommelier and avid mountain climber was stopped at a red light while on his way home from work when a small silver convertible BMW pulled up next to him, fired 5 shots through its own rolled up window, striking Yancy 4 times in the head, killing him instantly.  The BMW quickly sped away, but did so in front of a handful of witnesses who were able to provide a good enough description of the vehicle and the driver that it only took about two weeks for a tipster to call in and identify the suspect as 29 year old Dinh Bowman...a child genius who entered college at the age of 13, and launched his own boutique robotics engineering business while he was still a teenager.  How did a chance encounter during rush hour turn into a violent, deadly scene?

WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS DETAILS INVOLVING CHILD ABUSE AND MAY BE DISTURBING TO SOME...LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.

On the afternoon of August 14, 2025, Rebecca Haro contacted 911 from a Big 5 Sporting Goods Store in Yucaipa, California to report that she had been attacked and her 7 month old son, Emmanuel, was kidnapped.  She said that she had driven to the Big 5 from her older child's football game nearby to get him a new mouth guard.  She brought the 7 month old with her while her husband, Jake Haro, stayed at the game with their other children.  When she arrived in the parking lot, she noticed Emmanuel needed a fresh diaper, so she laid him down on the seat of the car and prepared to change him when she was attacked from behind, struck with a blow so hard that it caused her to see white, knocking her out cold.  She fell to the ground and laid there for an unknown amount of time before coming to and finding her baby was missing.  She called out his name and eventually went into the Big 5 asking if anyone had seen someone with a baby.  911 was called and a large scale search was launched by both the San Bernardino and Riverside Sheriffs Department assisting in the search efforts.  Within days, the suspicion turned to the parents as inconsistencies came up in mom's story, along with emerging information regarding the dad's criminal history of abusing his children.  If you have any information about Emmanuel Haro's whereabouts, contact the Specialized Investigations Division at 909-890-4904 or leave an anonymous tip at 800-78-CRIME or visit their website wetip.com

On Friday October 2, 2020, 24 year old single mother Alyssa Burkett was shot and stabbed to death in broad daylight in front of her place of work where she had just pulled in to park and start her day.  Witnesses looked on as her assailant, described as a black man, emerged from his vehicle with a gun in his hand, approached the driver's side window pointed his gun at Alyssa's head and fired.  The shot crackled the glass, left a gaping hole in the window, struck Alyssa on the left side of her face and eye, but did not immediately kill her.  The shooter hurried to his vehicle and began backing out of his parking spot when he realized his victim was still alive.  So, he threw his vehicle into park, got out of the vehicle a second time, this time armed with a knife...and approached Alyssa once again, this time outside her car on the walkway leading up to her office.  Co-workers inside looked on helpless as they thought this was an active shooter situation.  When her assailant was finally done, he fled, leaving Alyssa on the ground, mortally wounded with 44 stab wounds in addition to the gunshot.  Who would want to murder this unassuming mother of one 15 month old baby girl?  Her mom, rushed to the scene, and provided an answer to that question, touching off an investigation that reveal something much more diabolical going on than what initially seemed like an open and shut case.

These thoughts on the debate of the declassification of the "Epstein Files".  The DOJ says keeping the files sealed won't change anything.  They say there's nothing noteworthy in the files.  And keeping them sealed is to protect the victims.  I say there is a need to expose the elite and powerful who commit crimes against children with impunity and if there's nothing noteworthy, then why keep them hidden??

On January 26, 2015, after a heated text exchange with her boyfriend, 21 year old Texas College student and football player Carlton Champion, Jr, 24 year old Ty Underwood insisted they meet up to discuss their relationship face to face.  A few minutes after she text Carlton she arrived, she was shot to death as she sat behind the wheel of her car.  Attempting to flee, she hit a mailbox, turned around, went up onto a grassy parkway and ran into a pole.  Even then, she continued to try to escape by spinning out her tires, but she was stuck, eventually succumbing to her injuries.  The investigation soon revealed Ty was a transgender woman, but this was not a secret she kept from Carlton.  BUT, it was a secret Carlton wanted to keep from his friends and teammates.  Ty, however, wanted more, she wanted to go public and she wanted to make it social media official.  Carlton didn't want word to get out that he was in a relationship with a transgender woman, so his solution was to choose murder.

Billy Smolinski was a 31 year old man living and working in Waterbury, Connecticut when he inexplicably went missing on August 24, 2004 after returning from a trip he took with his 46 year old girlfriend Madeline Gleason...a trip where he discovered she was having an affair with a married man.  That married man turned out to be a Connecticut politician.  Because Billy told a neighbor he was going on a road trip for three days and asked that neighbor to look after his dog, police refused to take Billy's missing persons report until those three days passed, hindering the investigation from the start.  Today, almost 21 years later, there has been no sign of Billy and his family is still searching.  What happened to Billy Smolinksi?

We have guest on today’s episode is hoping to bring attention and light to a very cold case.  A few weeks ago, I had the honor and pleasure of speaking to 11 time Emmy award-winning (to name a few) creative composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and NOW filmmaker, Dan Brown Junior.  Because you listen to this podcast and many other podcasts across the true crime landscape, I can say with a reasonable degree of certainty that you have most likely heard Dan’s work…somewhere…on networks such as ABC,CBS, NBC,  Disney, A & E,  Investigation Discovery, Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, History Channel, Hallmark, NFL, HBO, TLC, HLN, Oxygen,, BET, AMC, Apple, Crime & Investigation… on shows such as Dateline, Snapped, Unspeakable Crimes, The Hunt for the Zodiac Killer, Pitbulls & Parolees, Killer Beside Me, Catfish, The Hunt with John Walks, Deadline Crime with Tamron Hall, Wives with Knives, American Greed, The Disappearance of Maura Murray, Very Scary People, Forensic Files II, The Disappearance of Crystal Roberts, A Current Affair…to name a few…there are literally thousands of places where you’ve heard his work and today, we will put…at least a voice to the musician who woke up one day and decided he wanted to “write the music you hear on the crime shows”.

With that, Dan created Crimesonics in 2018 with a singular goal in mind…to take over the sound of crime television, films and games worldwide by supplying the globe with exquisitely criminal production music.  Since then, Crimesonics, under Dan’s creative vision and leadership, has amassed an eclectic repository of criminal and investigative music and sound effects, redefining what Crime TV could sound like.

Dan has since crossed over into filmmaking with a project that is also a passion, with his documentary Girl Forgotten: What Happened To Brianna Wells.  You heard the trailer of Dan’s film at the opening, a link to which is in the show notes where you can watch and subscribe to Crimesonics on YouTube…which you’re going to want to once you learn who Brianna was and is…and the ongoing efforts to solve her murder.  With his documentary, Dan hopes to bring light to a case that has been languishing in darkness for more than a decade.  This is Killafornia Dreaming's interview with Dan Brown Junior
