The midterms are barreling closer and closer, and it appears the tides have turned. Democrats are already favored to take the U.S. House, but what about the Senate? The founder of The Cook Political Report says there’s a “very realistic” chance that Dems could take over the Senate too. Plus, the White House is running a political ad ahead of the elections, which is a repurposed ad from President Trump's 2024 campaign. But this time, the ad says it's being paid for by the U.S. Government -- by taxpayer dollars. With 5 weeks and 1 day to go, Holly and Greg give their political takes on where the elections stand today.
A man who's spent more than 40 years behind bars for a murder could walk out of jail today. Douglas Carter was convicted of murdering Eva Olsen in the 1980s, and he's had his conviction overturned twice by the Utah Supreme Court. He's awaiting yet another trial but could be released on bond today. KSL Legal Analyst Greg Skordas explains today's hearing and why it would be so unique for Carter to leave jail after spending decades on death row.
Topics we will cover on this episode of KSL's Inside Sources include:
Utah Valley University has released the results of an independent investigation into security on campus around the time Charlie Kirk was killed. It looked at ways the university police and Turning Point USA worked together to plan the event andidentified areas of improvement. In the end, the investigation found that no one at UVU "acted in bad faith or in willful and wanton disregard for the safety of others." The Inside Sources hosts share some of the findings and recommended action items.
Greg and Holly finish the week chatting about the big movie of the week with the hosts of the KSL Movie Show, Val Cameron and Andy Farnsworth. They discuss Forgotten Island and answer the movie question of the week: What is your favorite Brad Pitt movie?
Are your internet passwords strong? Or are you still using something like "password" as your password? With the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and the continued pushing by bad actors around the world, more passwords are becoming easier to break. A new analysis of passwords commonly found in hacks and leaks shows some interesting patterns; KSL Investigator Matt Gephardt breaks it down with Greg and Holly.
Today is 9/25, now known as "9-to-5 Day" or Dolly Parton Day. One of the things Dolly was most well-known for -- besides her singing and acting -- was her love of reading and helping kids around the country get more opportunities to read. To celebrate her legacy today, organizations around Utah are celebrating reading and books in general. For more on this, Greg and Holly are joined by the CEO of Operation Literacy, Jennifer Jenkins.
Do any of these sayings look familiar? "I Like Ike," "It's the Economy, Stupid," "Yes we can," "Make America Great Again" and, of course, "Vote for Pedro." What do they all have in common? They're political campaign slogans. Well, here's a new one for you to try on for size: "Vote Super El Niño!" Ski Utah has launched a new pseudo-political campaign pushing for the Super El Niño to dump loads and loads of snow here in the state this winter.
Chinese President Xi Jinping wraps up his U.S. visit this afternoon. He and President Trump are scheduled to tour the National Archives today before President Xi departs. Earlier this morning, they had tea together. But the President complains that not all news outlets covered the visit, including the media groups he barred from the White House. The visit as a whole has faced a lot of pushback from other lawmakers, so Greg and Holly discuss what the American people may get from this multi-day summit.
The man behind the Stratos Data Center in Box Elder County -- the project that spurred so much public pushback on data centers around the state -- now says the defamation lawsuit against him should be dismissed with prejudice (meaning it couldn't come back to court). Kevin O'Leary says no reasonable person who saw him make the claims on Fox News of Chinese spies would actually take them as factual reports. But the people who he spoke of see it differently, so they've filed this defamation suit against O'Leary over his allegations that they're being funded by the Chinese Communist Party. KSL Legal Analyst Greg Skordas breaks down the lawsuit and the motion to dismiss.
