Dawn Richard catches up with Kyle Meredith to discuss Second Line: An Electro Revival, a concept album that finds the artist further exploring her New Orleans roots through her mother’s narration. The Danity Kane / Dirty Money member tells us about taking electronic music further into the future, her love of Hans Zimmer’s work, writing over classical pieces, and the need for more people of color, women, & queer artists in the genre. Richard goes on to talk about what will eventually become the final part of this trilogy, her animation work with Adult Swim and wanting to turn King Kreole into an animated series, and starring in the upcoming film Isaac.
Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds sits down with Kyle Meredith to discuss their upcoming 5th LP and two lead singles, Follow You and Cutthroat. We hear about Dan’s gift of melody coming from his early classical piano upbringing and taking vocal and lyrical influence from Harry Nilsson and Paul Simon, as well as taking cues from Richard Dawkins’ The Selfish Gene. On the heavier side, Reynolds gives a nod to Nine Inch Nails and tells us about Rick Rubin’s work as a producer, as well as collaborating with Tom Morello on last year’s “Stand Up” and the social activism that shows up on these new songs.
Passenger sits down with Kyle Meredith to talk about Songs For the Drunk and Broken Hearted, an album that came at the end of a relationship right before lockdown. Mike Rosenberg tells us about reliving the cringe moments of past relationship songs, finding influence in Jim Croce, Leonard Cohen, and The Smiths, and what makes the music from the 60s and 70s so tempting to borrow from. Ever the thoughtful person, Rosenberg also discusses having a tree planted for every physical copy of his record sold and gives us the details on his already-in-the-works next album.
Liz Phair catches up with Kyle Meredith to discuss Soberish, her first new album in eleven years. The indie legend tells us about recapturing the feeling of her landmark album Exile In Guyville, experimenting with sound design, and how the album acts as a bridge between her two biographies, Horror Stories and the upcoming FairyTales. Phair also talks about what this new album says in relation to the message that Guyville foretold and the upcoming tour that finds her on stage alongside Alanis Morrissette and Garbage.
Paul Weller jumps on the phone to talk with Kyle Meredith about Fat Pop (Volume 1), a record that finds the legend displaying a set of finely crafted catchy songs. The Jam & Style Council frontman talks about his early love of The Beatles and their use of substance within a pop song, having Lia Metcalfe of The Mysterines guest on a song, and penning a tribute to Iggy Pop in “Moving Canvas”. When asked why he hasn’t been on a Gorillaz track yet, Weller confirms he’d be up for it if Damon Albarn calls, and also gives us an update on his 2021/2022 tour plans.
Davey Havok sits down with Kyle Meredith to talk about AFI's new album Bodies. The frontman dives into his love of performing at a young age, the duality of his artistic nature, co-writing with Billy Corgan from The Smashing Pumpkins, and his drive to write a song with the performance and audience always in mind. Havok also discusses the impact MTV’s videos had on his life, his love of Duran Duran, and watching his fans create art based on AFI’s songs.
Gary Numan catches up with Kyle Meredith to discuss his new album, Intruder, which continues his look at the impact humans have on the environment and humans as an intruder virus. The Industrial legend talks about writing from the point of view of the Earth, the bleak outlook within the songs, and the frustration of seeing the previous US administration set us back from environmental progress. Numan, who has aspergers, also talks about his fascination with emotions and the science fiction of technology’s relationship with it.
Counting Crows' Adam Duritz catches up with Kyle Meredith to dive into the band’s return to new music with Butter Miracle Suite Volume One. The frontman discusses the idea to write what is essentially a small rock opera and his being burnt out on the music business prior to this newfound inspiration, as well as channeling The Who, the importance of music in his life, and how dissociative disorder directs his writing.
Duritz also tells us what it was like hearing so many artists from the 2000’s emo scene naming him as a prime influence, and the struggle to release a deluxe edition of Recovering the Satellites due to the label losing and misplacing files along with the Universal Records fire that potentially destroyed much of what was left.
Surfaces catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about their upcoming fourth LP and early singles "Wave of You" and "Next Thing (Loverboy)". Forrest Frank & Colin Padalecki tell Kyle about going back to basics with the production, bending genres, and the themes that make up their feel-good music that include redemption, love, forgiveness, and peace. The Texas duo also discuss last year’s collaboration with Elton John on the song "Learn to Fly", having John Travolta dance to one of their songs in a Super Bowl commercial, and their upcoming tour.
