After Ohio State was roundhouse kicked in the chest by Northwestern on Thursday night, Micah Parrish and Jake Diebler briefly spoke to the media and Northwestern head coach Chris Collins.

Collins spoke first. He said his team really needed a win like this after the past few weeks.

Collins said that he was very concerned about Ohio State’s guards coming into the game and wanted his guys to be handsy with them to keep them unsteady.

Micah Parrish was point-blank asked if Ohio State quit on Thursday night. He responded with, “Nah, we didn’t quit. Next question.”

Diebler said he does not anticipate Ohio State playing a clunker like this again this season. He also said that Northwestern made the Buckeyes look like a “young team” which he felt they have not looked like in quite some time.

Welcome to a new episode of Land-Grant Podcast Network’s I-80 Football Show. On this show, we travel down I-80 to talk all things Big Ten Football. This is the only Big Ten Podcast that’ll cover all 18 teams. After every week of action, we will catch you up on all the conference’s games and look ahead at the matchups, storylines, and players you should be paying attention to for the next week. My name is Jordan Williams, and I am joined by my co-host Dante Morgan.

The guys are back and it’s perfect timing as the Big Ten and SEC completed their joint meetings this week! With college football suffering from a lack of leadership, the two conferences felt it would be good if they were aligned on important issues that affect the sport. The quiet part is they’re also aligning to make sure they can line their pockets, they’re not looking to spread the wealth. No matter the real reason for the meetings we may be getting some great new ideas from the meeting, as long as the sport acquiescences to their demand for four automatic qualifiers in the new 14 or 16-team playoff that will start in 2026. 

As a part of the news breaking from the joint meetings, and all of this hinges on the conferences getting the automatic qualifiers, the SEC may join the Big Ten by finally moving from an eight-game conference schedule to a nine-game schedule which will help lead to more uniformity in scheduling. There may also be a Big Ten-SEC scheduling agreement guaranteeing the two conferences play guaranteed non-conference games against each other each year. While we are already seeing a handful of Big Ten-SEC non-conference games if you remove the risk of teams not making the playoffs there is more incentive for a scheduling agreement which ultimately means better games for the fans. 

The last piece, and most surprising, bit of news is that the Big Ten and SEC may create a play-in tournament for the last two spots in the college football playoff. In this world where they receive four guaranteed bids, the No. One and No. Two teams in the conference will continue to play in the conference championship game and both teams will get into the college football playoffs. With two spots up for grabs the conference would stage a mini tournament between teams ranked three through six leading to four teams playing for a spot in the playoffs. This is a huge change but would lead to awesome matchups with huge stakes at the end of the season. Plus it could lead to other conferences doing something similar for their spots in the playoff. 

In their weekly pitstop, Jordan talks about the new women's soccer team in Brooklyn. Since there is no women’s soccer team in Ohio to root for having a soccer team in Brooklyn is the next best option. Dante celebrates the rumor that there is an above 90% chance that the next WNBA franchise is the revival of the Cleveland Rockers.

For the second game in a row, No. 8 Ohio State women’s basketball built a double-digit fourth quarter lead, only to squander it late and head into overtime. Fortunately for head coach Kevin McGuff and the Buckeyes, the Scarlet and Gray found what they needed to win in both extra periods of basketball. Monday, it was with an 86-78 win against the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Following the game, head coach Kevin McGuff talked with the media on a range of topics including that late fourth quarter collapse, being ok with the shot selection from deep for freshman center Elsa Lemmilä and his thoughts on the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee putting the Buckeyes at the No. 14 seed in the first top-16 of the regular season.

After coach, forward Cotie McMahon and freshman Jaloni Cambridge discussed the late Iowa comeback, Cambridge discussed hitting late free throws in overtime to ice the game and McMahon talked about how playing Iowa is still personal to the junior after three years of close battles and heated matchups.

In this week’s episode, Jordan and DJ discuss Valentine’s Day. DJ is buzzing because it is her favorite holiday. She loves to take time to send her love to not only romantic individuals but also her friends and family. Jordan shares his thoughts on Valentine’s Day and why it’s not that big of a deal to him. This sparked a discussion about Valentine’s Day today and how it is celebrated on social media. In the news, Jordan shares more coach hirings. Ohio State hires Matt Patricia as the Defensive Coordinator and Penn State hires Stan Drayton as the Running Back Coach. 

In the two-minute drill, Jordan shares that Women’s Flag Football has been recommended for the emerging women's sports program with the NCAA. DJ is excited because if it becomes an NCAA sponsored sport it could have positive Title IX implications for different schools. DJ and Jordan dive into what Title IX is and how it affects different programs.

In the power sweep, DJ and Jordan sound off on the Super Bowl. With a decisive win, the Eagles take home the Lombardi trophy but what does this say about the Chiefs? Jordan feels that the Chiefs got lazy when building their roster and hung their hat on Patrick Mahomes to their own detriment. DJ feels that the Chiefs were too cocky because they have been to the Super Bowl so many times in the last few seasons. DeVonta Smith was the stand-out story of the Super Bowl becoming the fifth football player to win the Super Bowl, a college national title, and the Heisman Trophy. DJ and Jordan discuss his Hall of Fame potential.

In the two-minute warning, DJ discusses the finale of the Unrivaled 1V1 Tournament. Jordan praises JuJu Watkins for her 38 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 8 block performance against UCLA.

The 20th-ranked Michigan Wolverines won an intense, back-and-forth battle on Sunday afternoon in Columbus, knocking off the Buckeyes 86-83 in the only meeting between the two teams this season. Bruce Thornton’s floater with two seconds remaining didn’t touch the rim, and Roddy Gayle Jr. left the arena all smiles as he beat the Buckeyes in his first time in Columbus since leaving Ohio State.

After the game, Dusty May, Danny Wolf, and Vlad Goldin spoke to the media, followed by Jake Diebler and Bruce Thornton.

Goldin said the environment in the arena was “great” and what he expected the rivalry to feel like. Wolf said that “All 18,000 people” in the arena were shouting obscenities at Gayle, but had “no idea what goes on behind the scenes” with the junior guard who transferred from Ohio State to Michigan in the spring.

May said that he thought the Wolverines would have an advantage over the Buckeyes with their two seven-foot starters, but opted not to get into specifics about why he thought that was the case.

Jake Diebler said he was “Angry, frustrated, and disappointed” at the loss and that he would allow the team to be angry and disappointed about it. He said that the game against Michigan wasn’t like any other game, and he was not going to “walk that back” just because they lost.

Thursday night, No. 9 Ohio State women's basketball returned to the court following a week out in California. After three quarters of touch and go basketball, the Buckeyes built a 14-point lead, only for it to vanish in the last five minutes of regulation against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

The Scarlet and Gray escaped with an 87-84 win over the Gophers, thanks to a big overtime period from forward Cotie McMahon and center Elsa Lemmilä. After the game, both spoke with the media, along with head coach Kevin McGuff.

Coach started the press conference off talking about the 14-point lead wiped away in the final minutes of the game, how McMahon wanted to take over in overtime and the play of not only Lemmilä but fellow freshman Ava Watson.

Then, McMahon and Lemmilä discuss the final two offensive plays for the Buckeyes in the fourth quarter, what Lemmilä does well on offense that other freshmen have trouble adjusting to in the college game and what McMahon said to coach McGuff after regulation to take the game on the forward's shoulders.

Also, the reason McMahon addressed the Minnesota area of the crowd early in the first quarter.

This week's traffic update is full of interesting news starting with the Eagles dismantling the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs winning a three-peat seemed inevitable but the Eagles defensive line dominated the Chiefs’ offensive line leaving Patrick Mahomes no time to throw. Ohio State has finally finished its coaching staff, handing Brian Hartline playcalling duties and promoting Kenaan Bailey to co-offensive coordinator. On Defense, Ryan Day went to the NFL hiring former Patriots defensive coordinator and Detriot Lions’ head coach Matt Patricia to replace Jim Knowles as defensive coordinator. Finally, the Big Ten has created a new award in honor of UCLA and Major League Baseball Legend Jackie Robinson to highlight student athletes' commitment to community service. 

In this week’s Road Trip segment the guys rank their top ten games of the 2024 season. This year was packed full of great games making this exercise much harder than intended. From top-five matchups like Ohio State playing Oregon and Penn State to unexpected shootouts including Illinois’ 50 to 49 win over Purdue, this season failed to disappoint. The guys shared a few games including UCLA’s upset over Rutgers to spoil their homecoming night. Jordan had the honor of attending that game in person and it was one of the most memorable games of the year. In their first year in the conference, USC made the list multiple times in their fight to adjust to the Big Ten. USC’s 2024 season was a rolling coaster including multiple fourth-quarter collapses and a late-season fight to get to bowl eligibility. 

In their weekly pitstop, Jordan talks about Women’s flag football getting recommended to join the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program. This program is the first step to being an NCAA Championship-level sport meaning we could see Women’s Flag Football as a division one sport within the next five years.
