Classic sci-fi with a unique take on time travel
Fritz Leiber's The Big Time is an old sci-tale from over 50 years ago that was one of the earliest Hugo award winners (1958). The title refers to a plane of existence beyond our present dimensions where two opposing forces vie for apparent supremacy by fighting each other as well as subtly altering the past to favor their side. Most of the action takes place in an R&R facility removed from the fighting and is told by a resident entertainer.
The sci-fi elements mainly involve time travel with participants experiencing past alterations as change winds that shift attitudes and perceptions. Intelligent non-humans are also present from the distant past as well as the distant future. Leiber was playing with the idea that various forms of life could be grouped into a focus on energy, space, or time, and that the war was a form of evolution to merge all three.
The narration is quite good with a solid range of characters, good pacing, and appropriate tone. Sadly, the story does not have that timeless quality and doesn't translate well to present day.

    Silicon World
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would highly recommend this 3 book bundle
Which character as performed by Joe Hempel was your favorite?
Joe Hempel did a great job narrating this book
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
This books are about artificial intelligence.. Man against Machine. This is a science fiction but its looking like it's getting to be real as the AI is getting better everytime.
    A great collection of books..
I've read all three of these stories separately and they were all amazing. Joe Hempel does a phenomenal job narrated them and bringing these books to life. If you enjoy good science fiction, horror, and dark fiction -- these books are definitely for you.
    SILICON MAN:
Silicon Man had me questioning my "being"
    5 out of 5 stars
AI helps humanity with nearly every aspect of their lives. But some of these AI are looking for more. A movement is forming demanding equal rights for the AI not always doing so in the most legal ways. That is where AI-TAC comes into play. Cole's job within AI-TAC is to hunt down these "rogue" AI's -- and in doing so he will come face to face with more than just the movement.
Narration for this was done by Joe Hempel and he absolutely knocks it out the park. Joe is definitely a go to narrator for me especially when it comes to the technothriller genre. He just has the perfect voice and narration style to fit these fast-paced technical stories. As with the prequel that Hempel also narrated--this story was perfectly told and I'm actually glad that I listened to the audiobook version over reading it first.
I feel like I've been getting lucky with my reviews lately, the last few books (and a couple after this one) were all on my backlog that I was seriously interested in--but life and other reviews got in the way. I'm sincerely glad that I was given a shot to give this a listen.
The story is extremely well written and fast paced. Sometimes a story, even with good characters, story, and arcs can be drawn out. This is not the case with Silicon Man. The action scenes, story arc, and character development are tightly weaved into an immaculate web. Massa really does a great job making a story both interesting and totally believable. He had me actually covering my mouth in shock/awe a few times in this story.
This is definitely a story that I cannot write the review that I want, because I will give it away -- but just know this: if you like plot twists, great story turns, and and overall story that leaves you asking questions but feeling satisfied at the same time. This story is for you.
The setting wasn't clearly announced, but it definitely felt like the near future.

    couldn't finish it
the story is good but the narrator ruins the scene the author is trying to set. it's a zombie apocalypse, things should feel intense. the way the narrator talks is very light hearted even when characters had just engaged in combat with a zombie, she makes them sound calm and almost happy. also the way she emphasizes certain words ruins what mood I think the author is trying to convey. and for some reason a normal conversation between 2 guys she makes sound sexual as if there is this insinuated sexual tension between them when all they are literally talking about is getting this drunk girl home. I might read the book rather since I do like where the story is going, it's just this narrator is terrible at conveying the appropriate mood. narrator's are a big part of making audio books good and they did not pick a good one for a zombie apocalypse.
    I was duped!
Read the publisher's summary. I did. Then I listened to the book. Then I reread the summary to see if I missed something. This book is NOT as advertised. They say it's all about a zombie apocalypse and how different people deal with it. Part of the book is about that, yeah, but most of it is about teenagers doing teenager things, which is no fun for a 40 year old to listen to.
The story is presented in a time-shifting fashion where the chapters go back and forth before and after some major event, in this case a zombie virus outbreak. I generally don't like that style of book as much as I like a straight story told from start to finish, but I understand for the sake of revealing things it's sometimes helpful to tell a story in a broken way.
But there was no reason to present the book this way. There's no great revelation as the outbreak was happening at the end of the book that couldn't have been told where it belonged in the middle of the book. In fact, I personally don't think any of the before stuff was relevant to the advertised story. And the before stuff comprised at least 50% of the total text.

    An all too real future?
Where does Look to the Sun rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Emmie Mears has a very distinct style - I've listened to everything she has written and published on audible. I preferred her Storme series but I was certainly not disappointed.
I will listen to almost anything narrated by Amber Benson - she has the rare ability to change the inflection and the tone of her voice. This assists the listener in identifying exactly which character is "speaking" and everything they're feeling. The quality of this audio-book as a result was fantastic.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Look to the Sun?
    The bull run
Which character as performed by Amber Benson was your favourite?
    Rose
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
A story that will leave you feeling every emotion. Anger, love, frustration and deep sadness.
    Any additional comments?
As you read this book you see an all too real future as it deals with the rise of persecution towards those who dare to be deviant. A rich setting with beautifully drawn characters. Emmie has written a story which is so deeply honest and causes its readers/listeners to truly consider the world we are in and the world we are moving towards.

In this follow-up to the acclaimed military science fiction thriller The Cold Between, a young soldier finds herself caught in the crosshairs of a deadly conspiracy in deep space.
Six weeks ago Commander Elena Shaw and Captain Greg Foster were court-martialed for their role in an event Central Gov denies ever happened. Yet instead of dishonorable discharges or time in a military prison, Shaw and Foster are now back together on Galileo. As punishment they've been assigned to patrol the nearly empty space of the Third Sector.
But their mundane mission quickly turns treacherous when the Galileo picks up a distress call: Exeter, a sister ship, is under attack from raiders. A PSI generation ship - the same one that recently broke off negotiations with Foster - is also in the sector and joins in the desperate battle that leaves 97 of Exeter's crew dead.
An investigation of the disaster points to sabotage. And Exeter is only the beginning. When the PSI ship and Galileo suffer their own "accidents", it becomes clear that someone is willing to set off a war in the Third Sector to keep their secrets, and the clues point to the highest echelons of power and deep into Shaw's past.

    New scienc fiction series
interesting but not very exciting all is rather bland and old story not very original a few good plots waiting to see what happpens next . if it does not happen i will not be upset .
Unfortunately not as good as the first book
Unfortunately not as good as the first book. I am sad to say this, since the first book was excellent (five stars). Maybe its just the disappointment at the separation of the couple in the first book, but I did not enjoy the new characters introduced. I was not able to finish the novel, which is quite a contrast from the first novel, which I re-read with just as much enjoyment the second time.
    Great military sci-fi
Quite detailed in descriptions of scenes and characters. You can visualize yourself on the spot. Ended abruptly - what happens next? Must be another book coming?

2015 San Francisco Book Festival Honorable Mention
In 2079, a time travel experiment sends physicist Carmela Akronfleck further back in time than she'd intended. Though she's still in her small northern California town, the year is 1936 and she must learn to live without the technology she's come to rely on. Her neurological implants should be dormant, but she receives a cryptic message, periodically accompanied by an audio transmission from the future. It's the voice of her former psychotherapist, an android named Kass, stating his innocence in a series of murders occurring in 2079.
When Carmela deciphers the code as a hit list, she's shocked to discover her mother and sister are among the intended targets. Further evidence reveals the killer's true identity, but the inoperative time portal prevents her from returning to save her family and vindicate Kass.
She considers another option: hunt down the killer's ancestors and avert his existence without radically changing history. She devises a plan to protect her family, haunted by doubts that she's becoming the kind of person she's always loathed - one willing to take another's life.

    Needs an editor
Repetitive does not begin to describe this book. The basic premise is sort of interesting but it could really benefit from a good editor cutting out about half to make the story flow better. Restating a single dilemma for more than 3 chapters does not build suspense, it just makes me skip forward to a more interesting section. Some characters have more than 1 name making it a bit difficult to follow. And finally, as with another currently popular book series that features time travel, I don't believe for a minute that people go from late 21st-century tech and mod-cons to living in rural California in the mid 1930s without overwhelming culture shock! No electricity, no phone, no problem - not a chance. In fact one scene set in 1937 involves divers and helicopters! Really! Helicopters were not widely used until after the Viet Nam War! SCUBA was not available until late 50s. Diving bell, maybe but even though this is time travel, you can't change the world that much when you can't control when you travel to.
    Time traveling Murder Mystery
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would, and have, recommended this book to several others. The effort Pennington put into developing the story arcs and plot lines to ensure that the tangle of time travel all unfolded correctly is phenomenal. I can only imagine the intricacies of his storyboard as he mapped out the sequence of events to make the story resolve itself as desired. Well done!
Who was your favorite character and why?
It's hard to say which character I liked best, as they all had endearing qualities and equally less endearing sides to the characters, and I see that as a strength. However, I did find myself rooting for the android Kass, who was struggling to understand himself as a life form.
What does April Barrow bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
April brings a wide variety of voices which gives the sense of a high production undertaking without requiring a cast of half a dozen.

    Couldn't put it down....
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Definitely, I would recommend this book to a friend. If you are at all interested in "preparedness" or just want an exciting "read", this is the book. You will learn a lot even if you are not interested in being prepared for the "changing earth".
Who was your favorite character and why?
Being a woman, I relate most to Erica. I'm not sure I could do everything she did, but it gives me hope.
What does Sara F. Hathaway bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
To me, listening to the author read the book is much more exciting than just reading the book. It brings out the nuances and "little things" I might otherwise miss.
    Any additional comments?
    I greatly enjoyed this series!
    Eye opening, Educational, and Entertaining.
Once again Sara shows us how vulnerable we are in this fragile and ever changing world by using her boundless imagination to tell a fantastic story. Her characters inspire us to absolutely never give up on our family, our friends, our abilities, our capacity for good, and above all our will to survive and thrive. Sara isn't just a fictional author, she lives the life of a prepared individual with a prepared mindset. This book is a wealth of knowledge that was obviously inspired by real life research and personal insight. She is an author who walks the walk and talks the talk. Her ability to convey the endless bond of love between a family is awesome to behold. Look beyond the story into the message that she is sending directly to her audience...get prepared for the bad times even if they never come, you and your family are worth the effort, and it's our duty to teach others the art of survival. This book is well written and artfully conceived. Another job well done by this wonderfully talented author. I highly recommend this book and eagerly await her next addition.
