Don't you just love it when your favourite series continues?

Thank you, very much, Reher, for answering my prayers....err...I mean hopes! You've written another great piece for this series, and like the ones before, it was an engrossing and pleasurable read.

Nova's no longer the star of this show - her daughter is. She's got the strength, the smarts, and even the stubbornness down pat, just like her mother. But Cyann is not without her flaws. A product of an interspecies union, she struggles with her identity to the point of feeling insecure and 'less-than' her peers. Thankfully, she's got an old friend - and adolescent crush - to show her differently.

Don't get me wrong, though. While the side-romance and family time is enjoyable, it does not detract from the real genre. This book is every bit the space opera/space exploration it's supposed to be. We're thrown into the story from the word go when Cyann and her team are warned by a strange visitor of an upcoming threat to their entire world. Plans are put in place to deal with this threat, and while doing so, new information comes to light about the Tughan Wai (first seen in Only Human - which, though you don't need to read first to enjoy this book, would certainly help if you did).

And now it's on. In true Reher fashion, everyone scrambles and fights to save what's most important to them. The mighty Tughan is not that mighty anymore, and Cyann finds herself struggling between sadly accepting this fact and doing her damnedest to restore him for the sake of their world. A new species is introduced into the culture-rich world of Trans-Targon and whether they're of an inclination to help or hurt is uncertain. Hard decisions as well as sacrifices are made, and through the pacing of this book, one can see that Reher has done their homework on space and biology.

I have rated this book five stars because the author has clearly (and successfully) done their best to provide a great and engaging read. For my own personal enjoyment, I would give this work four stars. I cannot pinpoint why or where, exactly, but for me, it did not have as much oomph as the previous works in the series.

The plot was decent (I love zombies) in this book, the rotters disgusting, as they should be. The back and forth between past and present were pretty cool, once you got used to them. It was the writing style that really got me, though it did break up the flow of the story a bit. The way the dialogue was laid out, mostly. It may not bother others, it may be a completely personal thing, but it really took me out of the story and I was unable to get into the book or connect with any characters. And I really wanted to! I even put it aside for a while, thinking maybe it was just the mood I was in, but when I restarted it, it didn't really change for me and I ended up forcing myself to finish it.

I also was unable to get into the narrator. There was nothing I can specifically name about him that I didnt enjoy, he simply wasn't my cup of tea. It could also be because I wasn't able to connect with the story that I feel this way, though. Perhaps with another story, written in a style more my speed, I'd like him better?

I AM interested in finding out what happens down the road with this tale, though, and I don't want this review to deter anyone who is intrigued! Please remember that this is just my personal and honest opinion. I hate, hate, hate having to leave low ratings, but I try to be as honest possible.

Killing Zombies in costume... stylish!

The Horror Squad is a short serialized book about a group of people trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. It's read in the first person and seems to be an auto-biography because the main character has the same name as the author. Hmmm,,,,,

Because of the genre, there has to be an obligatory comparison to The Walking Dead. There are a lot of similarities to TWD, and I can almost envision this group being in the same timespace as Rick's group and meeting up at some point. What was missing was any sort of conflict in the story. Sure there were zombies, but they were always dispatched with ease by the group. Besides an attempt at sexual assault, nothing bad happened to any of the characters. They seemed too.... safe, if that makes any sense. Granted this changes towards the end of the book. And even this was a sudden, jarring, screech to the finish, accumulating in a cliff-hanger ending. Is there a sequel? I see nothing on the Audible page that this book is part of a series, but the cliffhanger ending would imply a series.

In contrast with other reviews, I believe Mr. Salzman did a great job narrating and his voice suited many of the characters One one hand he has this natural Michigan accent, but can do southern "good 'ole boy" accents perfectly. Kudos to your talent sir! One minor nitpick is the narrator's choice of narrating the "...he said..." and "...she replied..." sections of text after a character speaks. The delivery seems very mechanical and monotone, almost pre-recorded, and there were times it was distracting. If Mr.

Fourth book lives up to expectations

In this fourth book in the Targon Tales-- and apparently the last to feature Capt. Nova Whiteside as protagonist-- the Rebel Alliance captures Whiteside shortly after she has received an implant designed to allow her to communicate telepathically across vast regions of space, via the equivalent of wormholes. Two separate factions of the Alliance separately managed to learn about the Union Commonwealth of Planets' R&D program, and Whiteside, a youth from the planet Delphi named Jovan, and a dozen scientists and technicians from the project are taken while trying to escape from the rebels-- their ship and that of the rebels end up jumping to an uncharted star system without habitable planets, in a jump that killed the pilot, like Whiteside equipped with the experimental implants. The Rebel captain says that unless Whiteside uses her implant to jump them back, he said I'll kill her and the other hostages.

That's just the setup, for a book that is not just an exciting work of space opera but also contains an interesting question of ethics: is it right to kill a thousand people to save the lives of millions?

If you haven't read Reher before, I envy you for having it still ahead of you... but this really isn't the best place to start. Sky Hunter is the first book about Nova Whiteside's career, and this is the rare series in which we can watch the protagonist grow not only in terms of skills but also as a moral and ethical human being from novel to novel.

If there's a fault here, it is less the author's than his creation's: it does seem a shame that two separate (and competing) factions of the Rebels' spy services had managed to penetrate a top secret Union scientific research center while the Union's security services were clueless!

Highly recommended.

My favourite book of the series

The third book in the series, Rebel Alliances maintains the fire and charm that exists in the previous novels. We find Nova, no longer a 'greenie' but a proven soldier, on a new mission. She is to test a new type of gear that will greatly improve communication methods in the military. But not everyone is pleased with this change, and so, Nova finds herself, once again in the middle of a military wide fight - and against people she trusted.

There is no limit of action in this book.

If you're looking for more audio books to listen too that can hold up to the quality and standard of stories that are set by the imager series or even the recluse series then you should look somewhere else because you will not find it here.

Absolutely horrible

It's like a 2 year old took a box of letters, threw them up and want ever woods were formed, created a story. This thing is so disjointed, no flow, it is truly the worst book I have heard in a long time. So unlike L. E Modessit Jr. stay away from this bookk

Not worth the bother

What would have made The Hammer of Darkness better?

A more concise story that has pace and seams to go somewhere, I have not finished it as I found it irritating and so am sending it back.

Star Crusader

This is the YA side of Michael Thomas's Star Crusader series. This is the first time I have heard of the series. While the book can be read as a stand alone, I would at least start in order for this part of the series. This is book 5. It took me a bit to understand exactly who was who and what was going on. Not because the story is too complex but because there are enemies and events that are referred to that are from previous books. The story is set after the Biomech War which takes place in previous stories/books from the author set in the same world.

The summery tells you the basics of the story except for the fact that it's a good, entertaining and enjoyable story. I enjoyed this book enough that I want to go back and read the series from the beginning.

This story brings together some of the best fighters/warriors from other stories in the series as they undertake a mission to save the Alliance. Action, space battles and suspense.

Kind of reminded me of Enders Game or the Insignia Series.

Andrew B. Wehrlen does another great job with the narration on this story. Pleasant voice. He has one of those voices that you can listen to for hours. Great character voices. Clearly spoken with a great pace. He's not just reading the story, he makes the characters and story come to life.

Female Mad-Max

A very different post-apocalyptic book. Xero is the main character. She is a doctor, rock star, bisexual, and into drugs. She is out to get antibiotic to save her best friend. What made the experience of listening to Under Dark Sky Law the most enjoyable?

The experience was not particularly enjoyable. The book was thought provoking and disturbing. It is a very good example of a dystopian world story.

Xero, the main character, I liked in one chapter and cringed at her actions in the next.

Worth the listen!

I started this book anticipating it to be mediocre at best, and I have to say that it actually really impressed me.

Normally Im not keen on female leads nor female narrators, because female leads tend to be portrayed in a less exceptional light, and female narrators can sometimes come across as grating. I took a gamble with this book, and Im so glad I did! Xero is really cool and oddly relatable given the circumstances, and P.J. Morgan's voice and diction is crisp and clear. What allured me to this book is the attention paid to trying to maintain cleanliness and the importance of finding soap, hot water, and antibiotics. Honestly, if I was in a post apocalyptic world I would be greatly concerned about these things too.

Xero (like the number zero) is smart and intriguing without being obnoxious and arrogant. The world in this book is vibrant even without the use of long and unnecessarily wordy descriptions; Im so glad about that, as I cannot bare heavy handed employment of descriptions that ultimately take away from the story. Under Dark Sky Law is a fantastic take on the post-apocalyptic story-line, and the narration is very adequate, and a pleasure to listen to.

Great short

Good prequel that leaves you wanting more! Sci-fi story set in space with a little female romance. Honestly, I'm waiting for Erik to do an erotic sci-fi! lol Looking forward to the rest of this series.

If this Prequel, I am dying to hear the first Book! Wow!

Narrated perfectly by Kristen James, This Sci-fi heavy Short Story buried deep into the ship and ship's staff of rift jumpers, from there scientific mission, rift senses, to who is sleeping with who on the ship, hey it's a long mission they are on. And one that can be dangerous.

Wow

A great beginning to a new book that Erik will be writing. The book is laden with sci fi references, tech talk and an interesting plot.

The narrator does a fantastic job bringing the characters to life and giving them the emotion each of Eriks books is filled with.

This is a great introduction to a new series (I hope). I'd like to know what's in Erik Schubach's noggin for an interstellar adventure. He has such a great imagination for giving us an alternative view and giving us more from what we are have read before in SyFy and/or Fantasy. I've read many of his books and this prequel is another feather in his cap. Well done!! Not so patiently waiting for more!!
