What would have made Children of Wrath better?

Continue the action and survival described in book one. Killer Bengal Tigers, really? 1800 era minded Indian tribes, really? I really enjoyed book one, book two was laughable. I made it to a single digit chapter then called the nice people at Audible and politely asked for my credit back.

Has Children of Wrath turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not at all. I know there is another series that can come close to the Arisen Series, I just have to find it.

Good story, too much opining.

Enjoyed book one much more. In Book 2, the author spent too much space opining on the characters views on life and perceptions of the world. These deviations from the moment, detracted from the story. I found myself skipping over these.

It is nice to listen to a book without cursing and god in the same sentence

I found the first book of the series on sale on Audible. I like that one better than this one as it talks more about family life. This one is good, but it's mostly about fighting in a war. I still like it and I will listen to the last in the series. I just don't like it as much as the first one.

Would you consider the audio edition of What Happens in Roswell... to be better than the print version?

Brian tells the story better than the TV in my head would have presented it had I read the book prior to listening to the audio version.

More of a psychological thriller than a sci fi

The characters were interesting and had great development. Their back story and that of their past missions seemed like it would have made a more interesting story. Good narration if a bit monotone at times. The plot twist seemed to grow more ridiculous towards the end. 15 million spaceships all take of from one planet? Even Star Wars didn't get into the millions for space craft. Just wasn't my cup of tea as far as sci fi goes. kept me interested, but needed more

There were many names for the AIDS like virus that was sweeping across the world, but the Americans named it best when they called it the Omega virus. HAV or a modified AIDS virus has taken most of the world population, those who are left have to fight against each other and new gangs that are rising up daily.

Narration for this was pretty good, not amazing, and not terrible. There werent really any parts that I didnt like, I just felt like he never really showed much emotion. The main character was going through so much in the book and it was maybe a few notches above monotone. Production was great, no issues there at all.

Well, two things are definitively clear, Principe knows a lot about radios and a lot about Italy/Napels. This book was not short on either one of those. He did a pretty good job explaining the virus, but for a book that seems to market itself as a bio-thriller the bio part is really missing. I would know, bio-thrillers are some of my favorite kind of fiction. If Principe had wanted to write a post-apocalyptic novel, he should have stayed away from using Plague in the title. That really gives the reader the wrong idea.

I think if I would have known this was a survival story/post apocalyptic story and not really a bio-thriller my rating may have gone up a bit.

I sort of felt like a dumb American while reading this, because I know little to nothing about the area in which this takes place, but I dont think that Principe explained it well either. It just felt like he assumed the reader would know where he was talking about and what the scenery would look like.

Overall, the main character was slightly stale and underwhelming. I felt like he could have been better. Everything about his story: past, present, and future just seemed very cookie cutter to me.

The action in this story was pretty good, it definitely kept the story moving from beginning to end. There werent too many characters in this novel, but it just felt like something was missing.

Overall, the action and post-apocalyptic world kept me interested, but I wish there would have been moresomething.

Another Fine Action Adventure From Resnick!

This is the second in Resnick's excellent new action-adventure series, "The Dead Enders".

I very much enjoyed the first book in this series and snapped this one up the minute I saw it was available. Like the first we are presented with the team and an Impossible Mission, which they then set off to accomplish. This time it's to rescue...or kill if necessary....the one Man who can build a defense against the Antarean Q Bomb. As they race against time to get him out before he is broken by his captors they visit a famous brothel, accidentally jump 60 millions years into the past through an unstable wormhole, and steal about a half dozen space ships (they spend a LOT of time and energy stealing the right ship for the job, it seems).

Overall I enjoyed the book quite a bit though I thought that they accomplished this *particular* task a bit too easily. For reason I can't go into for fear of spoilers then end up breaking into the prison TWICE, and it would seem to me that it would have been a HECK of a lot harder (if not impossible) the second time. I was a bit annoyed at how the last couple of chapters came together because of this, though I still considered it to be a fine book.

Highly recommended if you're a fan of Resnick's or just like good, clean action fun. Not quite as good as the first in the series but you won't be disappointed either.

Another Nice Caper Story

Another nice "caper" story of this super team of highly-specialized people, with the same brilliant leader from "The Fortress in Antares," who plays them like chess pieces. This time the stakes are even higher - billions of lives are at stake - and so is Pretorius's reputation for always bring back his team alive, even as he greets many situations with his stock "I'm working on it" response. There are a few small changes to the personnel, but it's mostly the same team from before, given a seemingly impossible task.

"This is the Night" is all about describing its rich setting, while its plot and ending are neglected

--My Review--

Don't be mislead by the book's summary; this is not a book about a boy-meets-girl romance, teenagers toppling regimes, or a band of young misfits finding out a world-changing truth. This story is really a series of loosely related stories, all about depicting its setting - a miserable world and its populace confused and made helpless by war and propaganda a la "1984". Despite having a mostly teenage cast of characters, "This is the Night" keeps its world refreshingly dark, providing enough questions to keep the audience wondering how it all came to be like this. And that's basically it - because "This is the Night" is all about its setting. It's so focused on its setting that it feels no need to develop a cohesive story or central conflict; the ending is abrupt, lacking any resolution, and leaves most questions unanswered. So while I found the book's setting refreshingly dark and its individual character stories satisfyingly unique, I was disappointed when I realized halfway that it never intended to develop the central plot it kept hinting at or come to a decent resolution.

--What is "This is the Night" about?--

Based on the book summary provided above, you might believe that "This is the Night" is about a group of teenagers who, stumbling upon each other by accident, realize that they have to work together to topple an oppressive regime in a war-torn, dystopian world. But "This is the Night" is nothing like that at all. It's less like "The Hunger Games" and more like "1984", but it's far less profound than "1984" and not to mention a lot less suspenseful than "The Hunger Games".

The all-important setting is a country called the Homeland; this country has been at war for 22 years with an enemy they call the "Foreigns". The war has gone on so long that the Homeland drafts almost all of its males into its army when they turn eighteen, although a privileged number are able to evade the dreaded draft while the less privileged desperately try to dodge it.

Who's this book for, anyway?

I have no idea who the target audience is for this book. After hearing the cartoon-ish voices, ridiculous technology, and the author's decision to substitute a swear word with "you know what," I assumed this was a YA book. But, it seems a little violent for that, in terms of a large number of civilian deaths. The writing style is just not very good. Also, did you have to name a robot Smoochies? Come on...

some woah moments that surprised me

Android X is the tale of Xandifer X Crenshaw and his human partner Shortcut. Hunting down rogue androids is their job and they are good at it. Then suddenly there are more and more rogues and they are acting totally different than the usual rogues. Something is up, X and Shortcut are thrown into a world where dangerous rogue androids are around every corner.

The narration was done by Erik Johnson. He really become X (and the other characters in this book). He has a deep manly voice that give the main character the gusto that was needed. His pacing and speed are great for first time listener to jump right into an audiobook. The production quality was perfect. No issues at all. I will be looking for and listening to more books read by Erik Johnson in the future.

Originally this was released as three separate books, and I read them all (there are reviews on site for all three, also). I couldnt help but feel like they just ended like the author cut them off to make it into another book. Well, you dont have to worry about that here. The omnibus edition of this trilogy was perfect. It was the perfect length and there was no abrupt stopping between books. Im betting if you hadnt listened to them separately you wouldnt even know where one book ended and the other began.

The stories within (about X, the war against the androids, and the main story about the upcoming android winter that is said throughout) were well versed. I can tell that La Ronn took his time in making the world a believable one.

This removal of separation was exactly what this story needed. The flow is perfect, the arc of the story is really fun to follow and the characters grow quickly but you really feel like you know them.

If you are looking for a fast-paced sci-fi adventure this book is for you. It was full of twists and turns, along with some woah moments that surprised me.

Excellent old style pulp space opera

Mars McCoy is a deliberately retro character in a retro universe, a tribute to old style pulp heroes and villains. You'll find few, if any, shades of gray here and not a lot of complexity or introspection. That's as it should be for the genre.

I enjoyed this as a nostalgic romp. This a collection of novellas set in the same universe and starring the same core characters. The stories were all at least adequate for the genre and the best were quite good for what they are. A good read, or in this case a good listen.

Resident Evil... Without the zombies.

Not in a bad way, mind you.

A pandemic story without zombies is quite refreshing given how inundated the media has been with them as of late.

A practical and unfortunately realistic take on how a pandemic and subsequent collapse of rule of law might play out. The ending might have fallen together a *BIT* too cleanly, but the scenario and motivations for doing so are ripped straight from recent news and debates.

The main character is realistic. He has his flaws, he loses his cool and he makes mistakes. He isn't overpowered by any means and doesn't always make it out of fights without losing blood himself.

My one complaint is that the story has a bit of a stutter in finding its pace starting out, but quickly moves into its own as it progresses.

The narration is solid and I have no complaints. She did extremely well with the reading and perhaps the only negative thing I could say is that her melodic voice doesn't really suit the somber atmosphere of the tale. Instead, I felt like Jake, being read a bedtime story recounting the events rather than experiencing them from Cooper's perspective. That aside, which isn't really her fault, she did a marvelous job.

All in all, definitely worth the listen and a different take on the usual survival story. I'd recommend it to anyone.

In Chapter 27 about the 6 minute mark, there is a editing goof. A second party corrects the narrator and she continues.

How will Cooper save his family from the Brushfire

A mysterious virus is here and it is extremely lethal, killing more than 50 percent of all of those who come in contact with it. Cooper Adams realizes that he must get home and take care of his family. What follows is his story of survival and helping those around him survive too.

The narration of this almost made this unlistenable. About halfway through, I nearly stopped listening and just finished by reading it. I don't really like to speak ill of a professionals work, but this appears to be the narrator's first go at narration. Unfortunately, it really seems to take away from a well-written story. But, at the same time, I can imagine getting narration for your first book isn't the easiest either.

Cooper Adams is an interesting lead character. He's both likable and at times, he just does what needs to be done. Which, in a case like the book is portraying, I can fully get an understand.
