Excellent progressively staged action.

Not recommended for children under 17 due to language.

Main character portrayed as how fighting Marines actually are.

Any other statement would be a spoiler because of storyline being so well laid.

A lady's bridge club is placed on a starship.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

An understanding of military service would help. A ship's captain (or commodore) does not spend time explaining his actions to his subordinates. Nor does he (or she) admonish his crew to pay attention to their duties.

Four Strange Stories = One Great Book

This is a collection of three short stories. Each of them makes you ask yourself what you would do if you were in these situations. The answers aren't easy. The decisions made can be questionable, but that is what makes these stories so relatable. The characters are just like us. They are human, with all the good and bad that brings. We try to do the right things, but sometimes things don't turn out how we expected.

1. Hold on Until Your Fingers Break asks the question: How far would you go to avoid certain death? The consequences of that decision determines the fate of the characters.

2. The Man on Table Ten - I immediately thought of this as a Twilight Zone episode as I read it. The question asked here: Is the old man in the pub crazy or does he really know how the world will end? Or both? Do we want to know the answer?

3. My Name is Mister Grief - This is the most emotional of the three stories. It will haunt you after you read it. The question asked here: Would you do anything, regardless of the consequences, to end your grief? If you could eliminate that pain and emptiness, would it matter if others were hurt or if you lost yourself in the process? You will be asking yourself those questions long after you've finished this story. There is also a story-within-a-story that tells the tale of two boys with special "gifts" and the different ways their gifts are used. That story could be expanded into a book itself and would be fascinating.

I highly recommend this book.

love Nicholas Guy Smith but story fell short.

The story is a nice bit of short fluff with very little development over the last book and that by it self is fine for a shorter story. Whats not fine is the jacked up price for thats not worth the credit or retail price. This book is priced the same as a full book and the third installment is even more. maybe ill pick up the third if it goes on sale but im done with this series for now.

Fun read, caution: abuse theme

This is the start of a series, but each book in that series can be read as itself.

This one has a theme of how far someone would go to gain what they desire. And that is our heroine, not the villain.

It does go into abuse territory, and if you are sensitive that way, you might want to avoid this.

I am not, and I had fun reading this book.

What a hard and painful story

It still almost doesn't make sense to me that Alysha managed to become the person she did after so little love and so much abuse, but I'm so glad some of us do grow through the suffering we've endured and manage to become the beautiful broken people we are and to grow into we're meant to be - in some sense because of the pain rather than despite it.

This is a tough one. It's a flawed book. But after not long into it, I was too drawn in to the characters and story to be able to put it down. The writing is clear and descriptive, the characters mostly sympathetic and likeable, and the gritty determination of Alysha inspiring. But it suffers from poorly written villainy - the bad guys are so bad they'll act against their own interests just to be bad, which was enough to break the suspension of disbelief at various times. And yet... really just couldn't put it down.

I love her books. The characters come alive in her words.

I'm on the fence about this one.

Hadley Fenice and her brother Adam just lost their genius brother, George, to a lengthy illness. He was the brains behind the family business. Now, Hadley, who also has some natural talent in making prosthesis and mechanized toys, wants to continue the business. Meanwhile, Lord Eilian Sorrell is recovering from a dirigible accident in which he lost his arm. He and Hadley join forces in creating a replacement arm, and then in an archaeological dig in the Negev Desert.

This steampunk adventure is set in England, perhaps the mid 1800s. Obviously, respectable women dont work, so Hadley has quite the uphill battle in convincing people that she can and does create these wonderful prosthesis and unique toys. She tries several things to get around this inconvenient social bias, such as claiming she in only the assistant or even dressing as a man. Eilian doesnt really care if she is female or male, as long as the prosthesis works.

Lord Eilian Sorrell, who has been an archaeologist for some time, isnt too stuffy. He knows what its like living rough. Meanwhile, his family is pretty uptight about many things, including how society sees them. In fact, they arent too sure what to do with him at dinner parties now that he is missing an arm. The first prosthesis (not made by Hadley) was hideous and greatly disturbed the other dinner guests.

I found these two main characters rather practical (in their own ways) and interesting. Hadley is fiercely independent. For instance, she doesnt force her other brother Adam into being the face of the family business while she does all the work. She wants to tackle it all herself and she wants the respect that goes along with a well made and well installed prosthesis. Eilian, who needs some assistance at the start of the story due to the loss of his arm, doesnt linger in a sick bed. He starts training his other hand for the basics, including writing and feeding himself. Hes not hesitant over undergoing a painful surgery to install a useful prosthesis. So, right off, these two characters pulled me into the story.

Once the arm is installed and working, Eilian wants to get back into the archaeological work. He invites Hadley along as his assistant. Of course, she has to cross dress for this and goes by the name Harold Fox. She does it smartly, practicing at home first with whats the best way to pin down her bosom.

Excellent production quality

This is my favorite of Sagliani's books. I was apprehensive about listening to the audio because I'd enjoyed the ebook version so much. I'm glad I did, though. This audiobook is unlike any I've listened to. Narrator, Michael Pauley not only gave a wide range of characterization but also scored the book with sound effects.

At first, I'll admit I was on the fence about the sound effects. After about 30 minutes of listening they weren't such a novelty and fit in with the story well. If you loved the 'We're Alive' audio drama, then you'll definitely appreciate The Rising Dead in audio.

I'm a massive zombie fanatic, and pride myself in boasting a collection of close to a thousand undead titles. It's a huge undertaking to 'scare' me at this stage in the game...for books at least. But when I heard those zombies moaning, it freaked me the hell out! So much so that at first I had to turn the lights on while listening in bed. Finally I had to resort to putting the volume down so low that I could barely make out even the voices. If I couldn't hear the moans then I couldn't have nightmares.

I was wrong.

Super creepy sound effects!

First things first, I have to talk about the performance and sound effects!! It was freaking awesome!! I started listening to what I thought would be a normal zombie book, but was so surprised to find this had sound effects (I didn't read any reviews prior to starting it). Now initially it distracted me because this is my first audio with sound effects, but that quickly went away and I found myself eagerly awaiting more. The sound the narrator used for the zombies was, without a doubt, truly frightening.

Pretty OK Book

This book was pretty ok. If the timeline had been spread out a little, it would have been more believable. I really don't think within 12 hours of all electricity, cars, internet, etc. going out, that the whole country will be raping, pillaging, murdering, etc. Yah, some places will loot, there were be gangs shooting at each other, but regular suburban folks and college kids will take a little longer before they're ready to gag, bound and rape the neighbors. Also, people don't get filthy in less then 24 hours. A couple of kids were locked in a class room with their teacher for less than 24 hours. By the time they were found, the children were filthy. How? Were they covered in cobwebs from playing around in the storage closet? And food doesn't reek in this amount of time either. In Fall temps climate, you can leave a chunk of raw meat out on the counter and it will not reek the following day. It may have a smell, but nothing to the extent that you're gagging. (I couldn't recall the time of year in the book, but no one complained about it being hot without air conditioners or too cold without heaters)

Another thing that really bugged me, and I'll try not to give spoilers. The change in a character's behavior/substance abuse had me doing a double take. I actually rewound to make sure this was the same person. You don't go from being a suit & tie exec one day to being a street junkie willing to do anything for a pill the next.....literally ANYTHING. That made absolutely no sense. Plus, if someone had done what he did (pretty bad thing at the end) I would not ask him to take care of my family. I'd made sure he died and was never around them again.

So to sum it up......if these things had occurred over a longer period of time, the book would have been worlds better and very believable as what could really happen to us if the electricity went out.
