There’s Ryan Baker, news host for the CBS TV affiliate in Chicago where he was previously a sportscaster. How about running buck naked if he lost a bet? And how about Jason Benetti, the immensely popular play by play voice for Fox Sports and the Chicago White Sox on where he got his devilish sense of humor. “I was a good student, probably too polite sometimes like there was really no edge so except, I would go home and my parents and I would watch like Robin Williams and George Carlin and Dennis Miller and Dennis Miller.” It sure paid off in his broadcast career.
There’s also Greg Gumbel, the venerable sportscaster, play by play announcer and long time host of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. He talks about that and working with the now round mound of analysts, the one and only Charles Barkley.“Plum job is probably putting it lightly. I know there are people who will give their right arm to be sitting there next to Clark Kellogg and Seth Davis on selection Sunday or sitting next to Kellogg, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley when the tournament begins”

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: guy rushes for a record 8 touchdowns in a college football game. Then as a pro, scores two touchdowns in a Super Bowl. Only one man has accomplished that feat and it’s Howard Griffith, better known these days as an in-studio football analyst at the Big Ten Network. Griffith works along side guys like Gerry DiNardo and the main host of BTN, Dave Revsine. Griffith loves his job because he gets to deal with college athletes. But he relishes the uniqueness of his football feats. “One of the things I love about it is being around young people.” Griffith is an avid bicycle rider and a member of the century club. Yes, that’s riding 100 miles! Not bad for a guy 55 but Griffith remains in great shape.
He scored those 8 touchdown in 1990 and while the record has since been tied, he stands long with all 8 being of the rushing variety. He might have scored three touchdowns in Super Bowl XXXII but John Elway got the final call preventing Griffith from likely being named the games’ MVP.
Besides his many football accomplishments, Griffith is an avid bicycle rider who one rode 90 miles to South Bend to see his son practice at Notre Dame. How would you like a job where you might not go to bed until 2am and then suddenly switch to one where you get up at the same time? Ryan Baker mad such a move in 2019 when the CBS affiliate wanted him to leave his job as its main sportscaster to become a morning news host. Baker accepted just the way his long time competitor and friend Corey McPherrin did at FOX 32 several years earlier. So why did he name the move? “It was a challenge that was presented and a gut thing.” The gut thing was seeing what was happening to sports segments on TV newscasts. “Nothing’s promised, nothing’s secured.” Baker saw longtime competitor, FOX 32’s Corey McPherrin make the same move. Baker admitted the obvious after making the transition. “The biggest one was waking up when I used to go to bed!”It may be a different genre but Baker claimed his basics of his job really didn’t change. He’s a story teller and he told plenty here including how his alma mater, the University of Illinois, exited the NCAA Basketball tournament early for a third straight year. Baker was once its basketball manager. He also rails against the transfer portal which robs schools of talent leaving leaving college basketball to look more like a pro league with free agency.Baker had the distinct pleasure of cover two World Series champions in the White Sox and Cubs and three Stanley Cup champions in the Blackhawks. But he’s settled in nicely with his morning gig giving him more time to spend with his two young daughters.
