In this episode, Lurch and I discuss a  recent UCLA study, funded by Harley-Davidson,  that says motorcycling reduces stress and increases alertness.  A study from the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, at the University of California, Los Angeles, seems to confirm that. Three UCLA researchers studied more than 50 motorcycle riders in tests that recorded their brain activity and hormone levels before, during and after riding a bike, driving a car and resting. Did they prove there are potential mental and physical benefits of riding your motorcycle? Well, listen in to this podcast episode and find out as we break it down for you.

Next, we talk about that fact that motorcycle lane splitting or lane filtering may be legalized and coming to your state in 2019? California is still the only state where lane splitting is legal and many other states are watching closely. Unfortunately, lane splitting has become a rather controversial topic. Mostly by those that don't understand the many benefits of motorcycle lane splitting & don't ride motorcycles themselves.  

The following states are in different stages of possibly legalizing lane splitting:

Maryland, Connecticut, Utah, Oregon, Texas, and Hawaii. If legalized, each state has its own ideas and rules on how motorcycle lane splitting can be done. Things such as whether it can only be done when traffic is stopped and at what speeds you can actually do it.

This is a straight up biker talk BS session and Lurch and I have a ton of fun talking with Scooter.   • Milwaukee-eight 107" ci motor has great power. Harley 107 ci motor has a touch more acceleration than the Indian Thunderstroke 111 with air, exhaust, and EFI tuner upgrades on both. So, the Milwaukee-eight 114" motor will definitely have more power. 
  • Accessories from manufacturer cost a bit less for Harley compared to Indian.
  •  More dealers nationwide f0r Harley-Davidson
  • Harley has a long history with the brand and bikes
  • Harley touring models have a larger fuel tank for riding cross-country
  • Many aftermarket HD accessories work and fit well. Beware of some aftermarket parts for Indian.
• Harley Cons:
  • With the Harley Boom!™ Box Infotainment System you have to add an expensive Wireless Headset Interface Module (WHIM) in order to have Bluetooth headset paring. And you have to buy a Harley stamped Sena Bluetooth headset in order to get full functionality and stereo sound. 
    • The Indian Ride Command® system is ready to pair with any major brand Bluetooth headset and you get full functionality. You don't have to add anything on. 
  • Some Harley Dealerships are treating their customers very poorly by stating they'll void warranties if a customer adds an aftermarket air intake or mufflers. This is ridiculous & Harley-Davidson dealerships doing this should be ashamed. They are trying to force customers to buy only Harley stamped products and pay mechanics to install simple things. 
  • Service at Harley dealerships-You want to trust they know everything but the fact is that many dealers are not up to speed and properly trained on the emerging technology such as the Boom!™ Box Infotainment System. 

• Indian pros:
  • Quality bike. Nice touches. Offering traditional styling and new limited editions. 
  • Technology-Ride Command infotainment system works great! Bluetooth built in. Just pair a Bluetooth headset. GPS updates are free for the first 3 years! Indian uses Navi Extras for the GPS maps. 
    • Harley uses Navi Extras for the GPS maps but you must pay $150 to $200 to upgrade your GPS maps in the Boom Box Infotainment System
  • Charger in the saddlebag for electronics comes stock on the Indian
  • Paint is fantastic-Love the color matched inner fairing & front fairing
  • Thunder stoke 111 ci motor has lots of torque. Milwaukee-eight 107 is better in higher gears. Both bikes with similar aftermarket upgrades
  • Smooth/quieter transmission shifts than on the Harley. Not clunky. 
  • Easier oil changes on Indian. One hole. 
  • Electronic saddlebag lock & unlock electronically. A nice feature that's not available on Harley. 
• Indian Cons:
  • Indian is owned by Polaris, who make a ton of other things. Are they really focusing on the Indian or on their many other products? 
    • Harley is primarily focused on producing motorcycles
  • Small saddlebag compared to Harley. The design is an illusion and looks very big from the outside, but inside it's significantly less space
  • Indian has a smaller gas tank. Harley has a 6-gallon gas tank. Indian has only a 5.5-gallon and you should you pack an extra gallon of fuel if riding cross-country with Harley touring riders?
  • Fairing feels more in the face compared to Harley Road Glide. Similar to a Harley Street Glide feel. Taller riders on the Indian will need to adjust at first but you can get used to it.
  • Much more limited options on aftermarket products for Indian
    • Expensive parts compared to Harley
  • A much smaller network of Indian dealerships.

This episode is all about the 2019 Harley-Davidson FXDR 114. This new motorcycle was released in late 2018 and at that time I took it for a test ride. To get all the details, check out my Harley FXDR 114 test ride and overview videos on YouTube. 

The Harley-Davidson FXDR 114 rides great considering it has a 240 mm rear tire on an 18” wheel. The 19” front wheel with a 120 mm wide front tire works well with the rear tire size. The new cast aluminum swingarm and inverted front forks with cartridge dampening both round it out to make a good cornering motorcycle. I was actually very impressed with its abilities.

The Harley-Davidson FXDR 114 has the Milwaukee-Eight 114 motor (1868 cc) and produces 119 ft lbs of engine torque. It will throw some heat up at your legs so be aware of that. Standard with the FXDR is an LED headlight, signals, and taillight. The Harley FXDR 114 comes with a 6-speed transmission, cable clutch, and comes standard with ABS. It’s equipped with a 4.4-gallon fuel tank and Harley says it gets an estimated 46 mpg.

The new Harley Livewire electric motorcycle has caused quite a stir within the Harley community. I posted a YouTube video when it was first announced and wow, you should read the comments. They range from complete understanding, to anger at the price tag, to absolute rejection that Harley would even consider an electric motorcycle.

Whether you are personally interested in an electric motorcycle or not, Harley must look to the future and they clearly realize the electric motorcycle will be a slice of the overall market. This is only the first iteration of the Livewire and Harley's first attempt at the market. 

This does not change anything for the traditional Harley owner, so don't be fearful. All the regular Harley models are still available and the internal combustion engine is not going away any time soon. You should likely be happy that Harley is looking to the future and figuring out how they are going to stay in existence. If they aren't progressive & tapping into all related markets then they will die and none of us will be riding Harley's anymore.

Don't buy a Livewire if you're not interested in electric motorcycles, but you should hope that Harley sells many of them to those interested customers, so they can profit and continue to produce great motorcycles for everyone. 

At $30k for a starting price & with the current electric vehicle limitations, it will be somewhat of a novelty bike in my opinion. Again, it's Harley's first stab at the market and they had to start somewhere.

I was interviewed by Lawdog (LD) over at The Fine Blue Line Podcast, which is his newly created podcast for cops by cops as he says. I actually got to sit and relax for once as a guest and not run the show. He wanted to interview me as I am a full-time police motorcycle officer and trainer. I also run Law Abiding Biker™ Media on the side. He had a ton of questions for me and we just sat and talked. It was a great time.

There are many Harley-Davidson rider stereotypes out there to poke fun at. As soon as you read "Harley-Davidson Rider" an image popped into your head. It's just the way it is and for many years it seemed Harley-Davidson riders were unchanged. But, has that changed and are the changes good?

On the mics were me, Lurch, and special guest and Patron Member Bob Dawson. They also weigh in on this subject and we had a great time, so listen in for a deeper look.

The Harley-Davidson rider you may think of  is an unrefined middle-aged male, overweight, unhealthy, long dirty beard, dirty baggy jeans and sleeveless shirt, tattoos, half helmet or no helmet, leather jacket or vest with pins and patches, half finger leather gloves, clunky buckle style leather boots, leather chaps, bandana on his head, wearing goggles, and wearing no modern progressive safety gear. Did I nail it?  I think that's been a long time stereotype of the Harley-Davidson rider, but it's changed over the years. If that's how you currently look, that's okay, own it.

Sure, when most of us got our first Harley back in the day, we leathered up and looked the look and walked the walk to some extent. That was the expectation to make you feel like a real biker. But, once you actually start riding and not just hanging out at biker events looking good, you realize that you don't need to fit that stereotype and you are introduced to much lighter and better progressive riding gear. There's nothing wrong with leather and it still has its place if you like it.

As you age you realize that you should probably care some about your physique and overall health if you want to continue riding and enjoying your Harley into the latter years. Long distant riding takes stamina and being healthy helps much. In general, we are a more health-conscious society these days and that has bled over to Harley riders too. 

In general, I've seen the typical Harley rider stereotype fading over the years and that continues. There is so much available to us in the marketplace now and bikers are taking advantage of buying actual gear that helps instead of trying to fit a particular look. Riders are just becoming smarter about things. 

And of course, you have different subsets of Harley rider stereotypes that have developed such as on the west coast. You'll see riders on Harley Dyna models with tall T-bars. They'll be wearing long Dickie shorts, vans shoes, and knee-high white socks & a T-shirt doing wheelies. Not that any of this is good safety gear, but it's a style. So, styles come and go in the motorcycle industry too.

In this podcast episode, I go into great detail of the dangers I see out on the road as a full-time Police Motorcycle Officer and Instructor. I see riders making so many common mistakes that unknowingly put their lives in danger. Unfortunately, I respond to many motorcycle collisions and it's never fun. Many times it's not the rider's fault, but had that rider practiced better defensive riding skills they would have avoided it. And yes, I understand that under some circumstances there is just simply nothing the motorcycle rider could have done to avoid a collision.

Both Lurch and Bob weigh in on their experiences and things they do to stay safe when out riding.  I truly believe that if motorcycle riders would stop making many common mistakes that motorcycle collisions would be greatly reduced. Too many riders become complacent and make dangerous mistakes, don't practice, and are not prepared. Ask yourself, when is the last time you spent just 20 minutes practicing emergency breaking in a parking lot? This could save your life and it's an easy drill to set up.

You need to listen in to this podcast episode, as it's much easier to verbally break down the things I've seen and to give you all the tips and tricks that will help you stay safe when riding your motorcycle. I will try to give a few of the highlights in this article, but again, the details are in the podcast episode.  Some more common dangerous things: 

• Following too closely
  • Back off! Give yourself reaction time and the cars behind you time
• Don't ride with your feet on the highway pegs in the city with traffic. They are for the highway.
  • Greatly reduces your reaction time to get your foot on the brake
• Cover your clutch in heavy traffic
  • Be ready to emergency brake and shift down to brake and escape
• Slow at EVERY intersection even if it's a green light
  • Expect a car to come through every time
  • Head checks left and right upon approach
  • Cover clutch and brakes
  • Don't just ride through at full speed and expect traffic to stop
• Don't start on a green light right away. Wait a few seconds to avoid those other cars trying to beat the yellow/red light
• Don't ride in a driver's blind spot
  • Back off or pass
• Tap your brake lever or pedal to flash your brake lights to get the attention of driver's behind you when slowing or preparing for a stop
  • Or buy an aftermarket brake strobe modulator
  • Be slow to stop/Following distance again gives you that ability to not have to stop suddenly
• Be cautious of traveling in the left lane in a city when two or more lanes are in the same direction as you are going
  • Cars ahead in the left lane will stop and have to wait for oncoming cars to make a left turn. Cars will not expect this and everyone will brake quickly. Vehicles turning right from the right lane don't have to wait and just quickly turn off. 
  • Again, the proper following distance will help you stop slowly and give cars behind you more time to see you and also stop
    • Following distance.....hmmmmmm, this keeps coming up? Do it if you care about your life!
• Be extra careful when a line of cars are stopped in the opposite direction as you and they are backed up. 
  • Look for gaps left in the traffic. Drivers will try to come out of parking lots through those gaps to get out and will not see you and have a blocked view from the traffic they are cutting through. 
  • Very dangerous, so slow down and pay very close attention covering your clutch and brakes.
• Practice, practice, practice your emergency braking and other riding skills
  • Take your motorcycle riding safety seriously
