In a 1965 experiment, Robert Rosenthal randomly labeled 20% of elementary students as "growth spurters" destined for unusual intellectual gains—and those students actually showed 50% greater IQ gains than their peers. They succeeded not because they were gifted, but because teachers unconsciously poured more into them through higher standards, warmer communication, more challenging assignments, and better feedback. This Pygmalion effect—where high expectations lead to higher performance—applies equally to adults in the workplace. Managers' beliefs about their employees leak out through subtle behaviors, body language, tone, and facial expressions that team members pick up on, shaping motivation and performance in powerful ways. The flip side is true, too. Lower expectations lead to worse outcomes, creating a vicious cycle where leaders who view their teams as untrustworthy, incompetent, or lazy inadvertently create the very behaviors they complain about. The solution requires extreme ownership and accepting that if your team isn't performing or your culture feels toxic, it starts with you.

The problem with "leadership" is that it's hard to quantify and qualify. Even the dictionary defines leadership as the "act of leading people." With a concept so nebulous, how can we determine what makes a good leader? And let's be honest, most people get into leadership positions because they're good at their jobs, but not necessarily because they're good at leading. It's completely new skillset that comes with very little training. Today, I'm breaking down the 5 Laws of Leadership that every new manager needs to master if they want to lead their team to greatness.

Authenticity is a hoax. Maybe that comes off strong, but in my opinion, "authenticity" has become an overused buzzword that often masks indulgence and accountability-dodging, rather than genuine self-awareness. Real authenticity isn't about being the same person in every situation—it's about having "Authenticity Filters" that allow you to be intentional and adaptable while staying grounded in your core values. The most effective leaders recognize they contain multitudes: they protect their core like a chameleon while loosening their shell like a tortoise, and understand that different roles require different versions of themselves, all of which are authentically them.

If you want to be right, be a pessimist; but, if you want to be happy, be an optimist. Not only does optimism make you happier—it makes you a better leader. Contrary to what many might think, optimism isn't naïve positivity or denial of reality, but is a powerful leadership operating system rooted in agency, hope, and belief in change. The fear-based thinking of "realism" (aka, pessimism) fails to inspire, unite, or lead people forward. In fact, chronic pessimism carries real costs—lower performance, poorer relationships, and worse mental health—while optimism fuels motivation, resilience, and long-term success.

This week, I got to chatting with two people who have been massive positive influences on my life—Jade Teta and Ray Hinish—on whether or not leadership is innate or can be developed. While we ultimately agree that natural temperament and early experiences shape a person's potential, true leadership can absolutely be cultivated through self-awareness, education, and inner growth. Leadership is less about position and more about one's "nervous system"—the internal state from which actions and influence emerge. Through experience, we've individually found that authentic leadership arises from integrity, humility, and clarity rather than surface-level techniques or authority. Real leadership involves balancing self-development with service to others, fostering environments where both individuals and communities grow together through clarity, direction, and empathy.

Do people really change? And I don't mean changing as in one-off behaviors, like biting your nails or drinking soda, I mean like changing intangible qualities, like thinking patterns, industriousness, leadership, or creativity. There are some out there that think you either "have it" or you don't, but I don't think that change is as cut-and-dry as a simple yes or no. Of course, we all have limits outside of our control, but I say people can and do change—so long as we believe it's possible for ourselves. Too many people stifle their own growth by believing change is impossible for themselves. But if we make the choice to see change as possible—scary, yes, but possible—then there's no limit to how far we can grow.

I've talked about setting goals, but the flip side of that, and what I'm talking about this week, is changing the bad habits and behaviors you'd like to let go of—the "I wills" of behavior change vs. the "I won't's." Look, change is hard, and doubly so when you don't have the most powerful of motivation, but I'm coming at you with 4 strategies you can implement when breaking those bad habits feels a bit too hard.

The New Year is a sacred time for me, so in this episode, I wanted to share a powerful reflection practice: writing a letter from your future self. Research shows our brains treat our future selves like strangers, which is why it can be so hard to make choices that benefit us long-term. But when we intentionally imagine our future lives—how we feel, how we spend our time, what has changed—our motivation, willpower, and follow-through increase. Vividly articulating the next version of our lives helps us set clearer intentions and move toward them with purpose.

There's a ton of great information about habit building out there, so why are you (and me, and everyone else) still struggling to make our habits stick? When I think back to my own life, I realized I've never actually changed a habit intentionally, and that's actually the reason why I've been able to make lasting change. Instead of changing habits, change your identity, and then the habits start to take care of themselves. Rather than trying to "eat more vegetables," think of yourself as a healthy person, and watch how you'll pick that habit up effortlessly. That's how you get your habits to stick.

If you've been listening to this podcast lately, you'll know that last week I completed something a long time coming: I did a Hyrox competition. While the race itself was miserable by every measurable standard, it reinforced a powerful truth: growth rarely feels good in the moment, but it often feels right in hindsight. I liken it to the Japanese concept of "Misogi"—voluntarily choosing discomfort to expand our physical, mental, and emotional capacity. Avoiding discomfort slowly erodes our confidence, resilience, and sense of aliveness, while leaning into hard things does the opposite. In a culture optimized for convenience, comfort, and avoidance, it's important to remember that the things we dread, procrastinate, or try to numb ourselves from are often the very experiences that build self-trust, courage, and meaning. You don't need a race or a mountain to grow, just the willingness to move toward the thing you're avoiding and see who you become on the other side.
