Our guest this week, Jessica LeBlanc, shares how she helped investigate and convict a perpetrator who tried to do just that in her badge story. Jessica also gives us insights on what it’s like to be an analyst for a fire & rescue team, and how it compares to law enforcement analysis.

From university policing, to military intelligence, to local law enforcement – our guest this week, Nick Lootens, has a wealth of knowledge on how to thrive in the law enforcement analysis field. Nick offers us two very different badge stories this week: one involving an administrative analysis and research-based approach that led to a policy change regarding tactical vests; the other involving a homicide investigation where the perpetrator dismembered the victim (listener discretion advised).

In this week’s episode, Dr. Rachel Santos looks back at her time as a crime analyst and manager at the Police Foundation.  She talks about the importance of crime analysis being part of the police department’s policy using the Stratified Model that she and her husband Roberto Santos developed. Rachel goes into how crime analysis implementation at police departments has changed from just a CALEA check box to actually be properly utilized for crime prevention.

Alex Lynch was on his way to graduate with an environmental science degree when he discovered he had a knack for analytics as he was assisting setting up surveillance cameras and providing investigative support to make his campus safer. Alex ultimately was hired by the campus police to provide further analytical work; following the pandemic, he was assigned to a COVID task force to examine how New York City was handling the situation. Alex was ultimately hired by the NYPD where he worked on a multitude of investigations, including violent crimes, gun crimes, missing persons, and more.

From CSI to FBI to CLEA, our guest, Jessica Elsmore, has done it all – what elsmore can she do? Jessica highlights her experience in her different positions, and how she ultimately decided on law enforcement analysis as her passion. She continued her professional development by obtaining the Certified Law Enforcement Analyst (CLEA) certificate through IACA along with further training through IACA, IALEIA, and the Tennessee Association of Law Enforcement Analysts (TALEA).

Proper Use of Interviewing for Evidence

In this week’s episode, Lt. Freddy Croft details his experience overseeing the crime analysis unit at the Houston Police Department (HPD), and discusses the differences between sworn and civilian analysts, especially when trying to implement more GIS projects within the department. Lt. Croft emphasized the joint efforts he had with analysts Barry Fosberg and Jim Mallard to propel HPD to the next level utilizing the latest best practices in data analytics.
