Our first guest this year, Barry Fosberg, kicks us off with a reminder that there is more to a story beyond the surface-level data provided; analysts should be able to see people beyond simply ”suspect” or ”victim.” Barry’s badge story about a gang member’s murder exemplifies this message. During his time at the police department, Barry developed an algorithm that helps rank repeat offenders and targets -- a major hit with the patrol division which was highly goal-oriented and needed a person and/or place to focus their attention towards.

We learn about Dawn’s journey from police intern, to crime analyst, to later founder of her own company and most recently best-selling author.

Dr. Camie Condon is the academic coordinator for the Intelligence and Crime Analysis degree program at Seneca College. Camie was the Scholar in Residence with Wilfrid Laurier University in Police Bachelors program and a part-time faculty member in the Psychology. She has an extensive background in crime analysis and intelligence research with iBRABO in addition to over 11 years as a police crime analyst.

In this week’s episode, crime/patrol analyst and pracademic, John Ng, demystifies misconceptions around evidence-based policing as well as an academic’s role in a real-world/practical setting. John stresses the importance of a harmonious partnership between academia and the professional world to advance the law enforcement (analysis) profession; his badge story emphasizes this point and provides an example for future research-based approaches to improving workflow and processes.

In this episode, Dr. Shawna Gibson highlights her experience with the graduate forensic psychology program at John Jay College in New York and doctoral criminology program with the Università di Trento in Italy along with how she ultimately became a crime analyst. Shawna’s previous experience as a therapist and extensive research in white-collar crimes, information security, cybercrimes, and transatlantic cooperation brought a diverse and unique perspective to the Washington State Fusion Center as well the Bellevue Police Department.
