    Karácsony
A magyar családok többségének az életében a legfontosabb ünnep minden évben a karácsony. Ezen az ünnepen jönnek össze a különböző városokban, esetleg külföldön élő rokonok, barátok.
A karácsony előtti hetekben, hasonlóan sok más országhoz, vásárlási láz indul meg, érdemes ilyenkor meglátogatni a karácsonyi vásárokat. Ha nincs magyar rokonunk, akinek vásárolhatnánk, a forralt bor, a pálinka és a bazári ételek miatt is érdemes kilátogatni. Forralt bort különösen sok helyen árulnak télen, a fűszeres forró ital kellemesen felmelegíti az utcán sétálókat.
A magyarok számára karácsony általában 24-én kezdődik. A délelőtti program a karácsonyfa feldíszítése, készülődés a vacsorára. Huszonnegyedike este a Szenteste, ilyenkor a szűkebb család elfogyasztja a karácsonyi vacsorát. A menü gyakran hal, töltött káposzta, mákos guba.

    Christmas
The most important holiday for most of Hungarian families every year is Christmas. This is the holiday when friends and relatives from different cities–or countries–come together.
Just like in many other countries, in the weeks before Christmas there is shopping fever going on so it's a good idea to visit some Christmas markets then. If we don't have any Hungarian relatives we want to buy presents for, come for the mulled wine, "pálinka" (Hungarian brandy) and market food. Mulled wine is ubiquitous in winter; the spicy drink warms up all those who venture out to the streets.
For Hungarians, Christmas starts on the 24th. The schedule is decorating the tree and starting preparations for dinner. During the holiday season every meal is twice as big as the usual ones. The evening of the 24th in Hungarian is the "Holy Evening"; this is when the immediate family sits down to have the Christmas dinner. On the menu, you will find fish, stuffed cabbage and "mákos guba" (poppy seed bread rolls). The gifts are also exchanged by family members on this day. It must be noted, though, that in Hungary, just like in many other European countries, the presents are not brought by Santa, but rather by Baby Jesus. Santa stops by Hungarian kids on the 6th of December. Many religious families go to midnight mass after the dinner.
Officially, the 25-26th are public holidays, so things cool down a bit from their pre-Christmas atmosphere of a loud marketplace. On these two days, the family usually set out to visit some relatives. Sweets and pastries, tons of which were baked for the holiday, travel hundreds of kilometers between families. Because of the distant relatives there is another round of presents, much to the delight of [...]

Tom: Réka, hogyan képzeled el magad tíz év múlva? Ugyanitt szeretnél dolgozni?
Réka: Nem is tudom.
Tom: És mi a helyzet a tökéletes férfivel?
    ----Formal English----
Tom: Réka, how do you imagine yourself in ten years? Would you like to work at the same place?
Reka: I don't know. I've always wanted a big family. I'm not really a career person.
Tom: And where would you like to live?
Reka: Anywhere with a garden. And if possible, somewhere close to the capital. I wish I had a pool!
Tom: What about the perfect guy? As far as I know, you are single...
Reka: There's no perfect guy. Or at least they are already married. Anyway, and what will you become?
Tom: I hope one day I'll be a rich man!
Reka: Oh Tom, you know that money can't buy happiness!
Tom: Money can not, but the thing you spend it on can!

(laughing)
    ----Formal English----
Peter: Tom, can we talk for a minute? It concerns one of the emails you sent to a client yesterday.
Tom: Of course, please go ahead.
Peter: Well, in brief, it is not correct to say 'I'm happy you managed to solve the problem carelessly'.
Tom: I don't understand. Did I spell something wrong?
Peter: The word 'carelessly' means negligently. I think you meant 'carefree'..
Tom: I'm really sorry, I will call them and apologize immediately.
Peter: That isn't necessary. An email will do, but send it to me first.
Tom: Of course. I'm really sorry. Next time I'll pay more attention.
Peter: From now on, don't be careless! (laughing)
