Vlad Țepeș cunoscut prin numele său nedemn era de fapt Vlad al III-lea, și a fost un prinț al Valahiei, care trăit între anii 1431 și 1476 sau 1477.

Poveștile despre masochismul său l-au inspirat pe Bram Stoker să creeze faimosul personaj - vampirul Dracula, nume primit de la patronimicul lui Vlad, Drăculea.

Porecla „Țepeș” i-a fost atribuită abia după moartea sa.

De fapt, în ciuda reputației sale mișelești, unii români și bulgari l-au venerat ca pe un erou, deoarece acesta a protejat ambele grupuri etnice și le-a eliberat calea pentru a se reinstala în partea de nord a Dunării și în Țara Românească, efectuând raiduri asupra otomanilor.

Vlad al III-lea a primit porecla „Țepeș”, deoarece după ce câștiga vreo bătălie, obișnuia să-și tragă inamicii în țeapă.

A devenit cunoscut pe plan internațional din cauza barbariei sale exagerate.

Pe când avea treisprezece ani, otomanii i-au luat ostatici pe el și pe fratele său.

Otomanii l-au instruit în arta războiului, echitație, literatură, Coran și limba turcă.

În timp ce fratele său era în mod constant lăudat și chiar devenise prieten cu fiul sultanului, Vlad era deseori pedepsit din cauza desconsiderării și obrăzniciei sale.

Unii istorici consideră că experiența sa din perioada în care a fost ținut ostatic de otomani, i-a determinat caracterul sadic, explicând astfel obiceiul său de a-și trage inamicii în țeapă.

După ce a devenit adult, în loc să se alieze cu Poarta, el s-a străduit să mențină independența Țării Românești și să împiedice ca aceasta să devină o parte din Imperiul Otoman. Pentru a realiza acest obiectiv, a luptat împotriva otomanilor care încercau să avanseze în Bulgaria.

Vlad Tepes, also known as Vlad III or more infamously as Vlad the Impaler, was a Wallachian prince who lived from 1431 to 1476 or 1477.

Stories of his notoriety as a masochist spurred Bram Stoker's creation of the famous vampire, Dracula, a name derived from Vlad's patronymic, Vlad Dracula.

He was not dubbed Vlad the Impaler until after his death.

In fact, despite his dastardly reputation, some Romanians and Bulgarians revered him as a hero from folklore because he protected both ethnic groups by conducting raids on the Ottomans and cleared the way for many of them to resettle on the northern side of the Danube River and in Wallachia.

Vlad III received the cognomen "The Impaler" because after winning a battle, he often impaled his enemies.

He became internationally known for his immoderate barbarity.

When he was thirteen years old, the Ottomans took him and his brother hostage.

The Ottomans trained him in horsemanship and warfare in addition to literature, the Koran, and Turkish.

While his brother was constantly praised and was befriended by the sultan's son, he was punished often for his defiance and impudence.

Some historians believe that his experience while being held by the Ottomans molded him into the sadist he became later in life, especially his penchant for impaling his enemies.

Instead of allying with the Ottomans after he became an adult, he strived to keep Wallachia an independent region instead of allowing it to become part of the Ottoman Empire, and as such, he led armies to rout the Ottomans as they tried to advance in Bulgaria.
