Derek: (01:02)Erin, thanks for joining us on learn to win.Erin: (01:22)I’m happy to be here.Derek: (01:23)There are so many ways we could take this conversation. But just as a starting point, you know, we talked a bit about education and children and evolution of life. Maybe you could just tell us a bit about how you got into your line of work right now and how that story has kind of influenced you. Erin: (01:39)Well I guess I would have to go back to when I was 11 and I knew, I looked around, I knew that I had a beautiful childhood. My parents were amazing, loving, supportive. They were just amazing. But when I went to school as I started getting older, I looked around and I thought, I don’t think everybody here is experiencing what I have at home. And so that felt very bad to me. And so I made the decision at age 11 that I wanted to spend my life doing whatever that meant to other kids.Derek: (02:15)That’s amazing. Todd: (02:16)That is that you knew that at 11 years old. Yeah. I don’t even know what I was thinking at 11. But that really is to have that moment of reflection and really what should we talk a lot about our show and the awareness that, Hang on, I have something that’s really special that other people might not, right? Erin: (02:33)Yeah. So I knew that forever from them or you know, since then. And then I went to school, I got a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Then I got a master’s degree in psychology and I worked with foster, adoptive and biological families for about 20 year...

Todd: (00:00)Beautiful segue into fear. Joe Rogan was, I met him when I was on fear factor and that was another story we can’t get into, but I really gravitated towards your work and your thoughts on fear, right? And fear and I think pushing yourself and getting outside your comfort zone. But on the flip side of the coin, also your book that had by far the most impact on me was the debt. It actually made me break up a partnership with a business partner. So it’s this fearlessness that I have some of in me in certain ways. And then knowing when to not be fearless. So I’m curious to hear your thoughts on why is it so important to confront fears or understand your fears and when do you, when do you decide to push forward and when do you stay back.Seth: (00:50)That’s a great question. I like to dissect the words here. I have never proposed fearlessness. I think fearlessness is really close to recklessness, which is really close to being dead. The fear is there for a reason and you probably can’t even make it go away even if you want to. That’s not a question for me. The question for me is, first of all, why are you afraid of fear as opposed to just listening to fear? Cause if you’re afraid of your knowing you have two fears and you don’t even get near the thing, if you can figure out which part of it you’re afraid of and why even if that’s a false signal or a useful signal, it’s a false signal. It’s probably for the other people. And in that moment you have a huge advantage is you realize it’s a false signal and they don’t.Seth: (01:39)And that, you know, just we’ve mentioned email a couple of minutes ago. When did you get your first email, address? Why didn’t you get your first email addre...

And we were just talking about direct sighting and we were just talking about education. Why don’t we just start there. It’s kind of an interesting spot, right? So how, you know, in the concept of your books, right? And the concept of, of hooked and distractions. How have you seen this apply to the way that you’re educating your own family, right? And the way that you’re offering opportunities to grow and find your purpose?Nir: (01:47)Yeah. So education is an interesting field. So I’ve made investments in the education industry. Whenever I see people using the hook model for my first book for good to help people form healthy habits, I’m inherently interested in. Then if it makes for good business sense, well then I’m really interested. So company I invested in a few years ago, Kahoot is today the world’s largest educational software. They just went public recently. That turned out to be my best investment that I’ve made as an angel and a, it’s amazing. I mean, they’re getting kids hooked on to in-classroom learning and so it’s a great example of how we can use habit forming products for good, right? When people haven’t read hooked, if they just judge a book by its cover, they’ll say, Oh, is it ethical to hook people? Right? I mean, that’s what Facebook and these video games are doing to us. Right? But no, no, no. We can grab these same secrets. We can use the same consumer psychology that Facebook and the video kind of companies are using to keep us hooked...

Appreciate how far you traveled all the way from Paris, from New York Max and Brandon with REVINAX, here to talk to us about all things, virtual reality, augmented reality and how the technology landscape is changing in education and obviously something that’s very important and around Scrimmage as well. But I think just start why don’t we start with how you’ve come into this space. I mean, you literally came from being a physician, you were a surgeon and just decided to start a virtual reality technology company. How did, how’d that happen? Max: (02:45)I was a pediatric neurosurgeon, so you know, that should be able to perform my first surgeries. I had to travel a lot going in there. Lots of different hospitals to learn from various experience. And the main program is even if you are in the operating room with them, you around being beside them or behind them, sometimes facing them so your brain isn’t memorizing in the right direction. And then when you get back home, when you want to review quickly your technique, in fact you don’t have a lot of opportunity to be able to act for the first time. Derek: (03:23)And so you just said, this is the way I need to build this solution. Just recognize at the moment. Max: (03:27)I was engaged in a university career, so I began to learn about instructional design mainly for physicians and first being engaged in you know, physics and education sciences. And then at this time it was the revival of VR, virtual reality. And then we began with the development kit from environments of course, and we went through these different steps in order to be able to do, think about an environments really dedicate you for training through VR.Derek: (04:06)Got it. Yeah. You mentioned something there. I think it’s important to respond to is that VR has been around for 20 almost 30 years, was like as a, as a technology,

And started when I sold all through college and graduate school. When I was in graduate school, I had a mentor that was a sales expert and self esteem expert and I became a, a mentee of him. His name was bill McGrane and talked about how selling was a science and a structure, not an art and what you can do to improve your consistency in the delivery of that. So it looks artful and that really lit a fire for me. Angelo: (16:15)You know, and I, and you know, I have a podcast and it’s about, for me it’s about education and essence learning and how can my listeners benefit as in your case benefit from someone like me or like you that can impart some wisdom in the, in the way think how would they went about, for example, growing their business and how can someone else learn from that? Ups and downs. A lot of my presentations are about growth and you know, I, I talk about the road to growth and I have this visual of this shows all these twists and turns and ups and downs, you know, rocks in the way. And because it is, it’s not a straight line. If it was, you know, we’d all be successful in business. And so how do you continually learn from those? My, my first business I was 23, I have this fantastic idea. These older guys, I was in doing some, I worked for an advertising agency and it was an opportunity to take it from the things I did in school to actually practical. I love the film business and I thought I’d take my marketing skills and go work for, you know, giant studio and I didn’t want to be an actor, but I wanted to be in production and you know, drive movies and you know, success and all that. So these guys at time, 23, they were 45, 46 convinced me that we can start up a film business in orange County, California. And in the strategy I was really ignorant at that time was like, well bring Hollywood to orange County and that didn’t work.Angelo: (17:50)I was in and out and eight months. But what I learned about business and what it took to, and not even the skill set that I have, it just business and understanding how to, you know, motivate and convince people that your idea is solid and get them excited about that aspect. You get them to join and you know, want it, have interest in and hopefully consideration and trial on what you were offering. I took that to heart and it was seven years later that I started my second business and it was as a consultant, I left the ad business and I worked, my consultancy was to other advertising agencies. So now I’m basically selling the people who had been in my situation and I was able to really understand their side, that I had to understand their motivation for bringing on someone like me. And I was able to craft and pitch myself and, and provide them solutions that would benefit their customers. That that propelled, you know,

I think it’s going to be a high impact, high value episode for our listeners.Todd: (26:26)Yeah, and it’s, it’s sort of the meta discussion before deciding what your goals are and what you are, what you need to do, what you want to do, what your purpose is.Derek: (26:36)It’s who are you?Todd: (26:37)It’s who are you. Yeah. Who are you? What identity have you decided have you chosen? I think as part of it is a choice. Identities, plural, identities. And how do you understand that? How do you discover it?
