So many of us have struggled (or are struggling) with a toxic / obsessive/ addicting relationship to fitness thanks to diet culture. We're told that being "fit" means doing x, y, z and making our entire world revolve around when we workout, what we do, how many calories are burned, how much we sweat, and how we look in comparison to models and photoshopped bodies. In this episode with Helen you'll hear us break down what toxic fitness culture is and how to break free from it. With Helen's wisdom and the discussions we have, you'll see that it is possible to have a peaceful and intuitive relationship to movement and your body.

Consider this episode a crossover between fun life story and a serious struggle moment for my recovery journey. The hope is to remind any listening that these moments, thoughts, experiences can occur while your'e recovering and that's a-okay ... so long as you remember in the end "why" you first chose to recover. Make the choice most aligned with the future you want; something I dive into in the episode.
I share about:
- Feeling insecure in my body and outfit
- My relationship with alcohol and food fears
- ED pressures with food and exercise the morning after
- Choosing the action most aligned with recovery

As someone working through the curvy journey of ED recovery, Imogen Barnes knows what it feels like to fall into diet culture. As she shares today, her body insecurities stemmed from societal standards, body focused comments, and fatphobic doctors that made her believe dieting was the only solution. After years of believing this to be true, Imogen was able to see just how toxic diet culture is and get the help she needed. As a content creator she now works to advocate and raise awareness for those struggling in a similar existence; one where the eating disorder or disordered cognitions rule your life.

After falling into a quarter life crisis, Tess Brigham made it her life’s work to support others going through a similar experience. As she shares in this episode, these life experiences are something we all face in one way or another. The key is to develop a tool kit and support system to get through them. You can be a high achiever and be happy all at once, life shouldn’t be a sacrifice between what you want and what’s expected.
