Publisher's Summary:
"We are to love God for himself, because of a twofold reason; nothing is more reasonable, nothing more profitable." On Loving God is first a touching description of God's love for us as an unmistakably demonstrated in the death of his son. Second, it is a call for us to joyfully respond to God like the child who runs to and embraces her father whose love is sure. As St. Bernard writes, "They love all the more, because they know themselves to be loved so exceedingly."
Members Reviews:
Rich, Short, and Essential
Tackling the subject of loving God, (St.) Bernard of Clairvoux, 'On Loving God' reaches such depths comparable to (St.) Teresa of Avila'sInterior Castle (Dover Thrift Editions)in a shorter space and time. Ecumenical, the book has a wide Christian appeal, for his proofs are mainly from scripture, and the thrust is as accessible to most readers as Thomas Kempis's classic,The Imitation of Christ (Paraclete Essentials). In this book, he progresses persuasively to each level of potential growth we have to love God Himself.
He explains the problems that keep us away from our progress with our love of God, and he elaborates thoroughly the differences between the spirit and the flesh, using several psalms, Paul's letters, and other biblical books from Genesis to Job.
Resourceful, rich, and rewarding, 'On Loving God' can be completed in a few sittings, but also be enough to pause and reflect upon for many additional hours to come.
Happy Feast (Memorial) of St. Bernard of Clairvaux), August 20, 2012. :>)
It is amazing reading from someones writings in the 11th Century
I do not find an ( I ) in St. Bernard's writing, the implication is that he ascribes to the other saints that he quotes. It is amazing reading from someones writings in the 11th Century. What a mind and soul, we need someone like that around today.
A must read !
A must read. After the Gospels and The imitation of Christ this should be number three on the list.
This book goes into depth about why we should love God, what are the rewards for loving God and why the Christian has so much more of a reason to love god. The book is also about Love itself.
I ran into this book on the web site Booksshouldbefree Loved the MP3 file. I loved it so much I bought the book!
The book also illustrates the Genius of St Bernard of Clairvaux. I know almost nothing about the man but this book tells me about his love for God and his Genius.
If you want to Love God then you got to read the book. This book is a true treasure!
