Mark Hamrick, Senior Economic Analyst for Bankrate.com, joins Lisa Dent to discuss what he anticipates to appear on the the September jobs report which will be released Thursday, November 20th. Hamrick shares that the September report is a pre-shutdown report. The expectation is that the unemployment numbers remained steady, and while lackluster, the hiring numbers are enough to keep unemployment numbers low. However, Hamrick believes the November report will be an indicator of how the government shutdown affected the broader economy.

Maria Pappas, Cook County Treasurer, joins Lisa Dent. She confirms that she plans to enter the race for Mayor of Chicago but she isn’t ready to announce yet, and explains why. She then discusses the Loop’s declining value and its affect on Chicago homeowners, Black communities in particular. Pappas explains that as commercial properties in the Loop decrease, communities in other Chicago neighborhoods are now paying a 16.7% median residential tax bill. Predominantly Black areas on the city’s South and West Sides are being affected. In those neighborhoods, home values have soared since the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving lower income families in those communities to pay the higher property taxes. She discusses some options for those facing the higher bills.

Dr. Priya Freaney, Cardiologist at the Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, joins Lisa Dent to discuss menopause and how its onset affects women’s heart health. Heart disease is the largest cause of death for women, and the risk significantly increases after the beginning of menopause. Dr. Freaney shares how the loss of estrogen, other changes brought on by menopause contribute to an increase in heart disease in women.
