Lame story plus excessively politically correct

High Heat is Novel #8 in the Detective Nikki Heat series. I've listened to all 8 and this is the only one to qualify as UTTERLY PATHETIC. This series is a spinoff of the Castle TV show with Rook being Castle and Heat being Beckett. Some of the earlier books in the series are fun listens. This one is not. The left wing political correctness is the most disappointing part of this novel. It is grossly excessive. I suppose it is what one should expect from Disney - ABC during a national election.

The ending sets up a future novel either in the Nikki Heat or Derrick Storm series.

Such a disappointing read. Propaganda at ever turn. I read for entertainment our education and this was neither.

Welcome back, Aurora!

I really enjoyed this series so I was pleased to discover that Charlaine Harris has decided to give us more of Aurora. We get to catch up on her life as well as friends and family. It is the usual cozy mystery where Aurora figures out what is really going on while the police don't have a clue. As she anticipates the birth of her baby, I am anticipating the next entry into the series, because we were left with many questions that need solving.

And, for those of you who are reading this because you have seen the series on TV, please start from the beginning of the series. It really does make a difference. You will also discover how much better the books are. The TV series sucks.

Another Harris Success

I have read all the Aurora Teagarden books and loved them. This latest is as good as the first. The main character is lovable and fun. The reader captured Aurora perfectly. Anyone wanting a light and funny listen can't go wrong with any of the Teagarden books.

Aurora Teagarden is back and better than ever. I hope this isn't the last book in this series.

Like coming home to long lost friends

Excellence

What I thought was a great ride in a really good story turn into one of those mind blowing adventures you completely didn't expect to be on and are so grateful you happened to become swept up in. I loved this book! It was my first by this author and I am so excited to see there are more for me to devour. The narrator deserves a mention as well, as she was excellent. Definitely recommend and hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Pretty good narrators, ok story

There was nothing wrong with the narrators, they were more than adequate, but I feel like the story was misrepresented. It was pitched as being more suspense, but it was mostly just a look inside one traumatized family. If I had known that beforehand I might have enjoyed it more, but I mostly felt that nothing really HAPPENED in the book. Not terrible, but not great.

Great Holly Barker Story From the "Elaine's Years"

This is the old Stone and Holly that we know. This story has twists and turns to make it interesting and a good listen. The story includes (in addition to Stone and Holly), Ham Barker, Lance Cabot, Dino, Herbie, Joan, Ed Eagle and Elaine

with references to some old favorites like Bob Cantor. At times it looks like Stone and Holly are doomed.

Interesting, a little long, but definitely enjoyable for a Stone fan. Guess it builds on the relationships with Holly, Carpenter and Lance for later books.

Another GREAT Stone Barrington! If it weren't for the mid '90 references to pay phones and and land lines, this book would be ageless.

Editor did poor job

The editor failed to edit out the narrator's loud breath intakes. It was so distracting I couldn't get past the first five minutes of the book. If the same book was read by a different narrator, I would get it. I liked Book 1.

It's all together here

Lou Berney writes with gentle power here. I respect tight plotting, dimensional characters, and a story arc that's nimble and quick as a mechanical rabbit teasing runners on a dog track. There's just no down side to "The Long and Faraway Gone". Its ensemble's cut and pasted from different places in time and Berney uses them to create two whodunits that ride parallel tracks seamlessly and comfortably. Wyatt, a troubled PI and Julianna the traumatized nurse share a common neurosis - each triggered by mysterious tragedies that happened long ago and faraway from the moment where they live today.

Brian Hutchison and Amy McFadden share a note-perfect talent to deepen this complex story way farther than I'd have imagined if I merely read this novel. Look up there... I gave Bermey, McFadden and Hutchison 15 stars! And I only stopped 'cause I couldn't figure out how to sniggle more into the star-space.

You like mysteries that resonate literary as well? I do and I'll look for more Berney books... Right now!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Long and Faraway Gone to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version. I always prefer the audiobook, as a good one gives you the gift of the narrators' performance, which, when it's excellent, is like a twelve hour movie in which you can cast the actors.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. It's very clever. Alternating characters between Giuliana and Wyatt turns out to be an excellent device, as both are very talented readers, and the material which Mr. Berney has given them to read is just great. Sometimes I had to stifle my own laughter, because I didn't want to miss the next joke. Seriously, or, srsly, as my 23 yr old son would text that word.

Needs a stronger heroine

Good characters, but main character agonizes over everything and her lack of confidence is annoying and boring. Too many cliche situations (cell phone left in the car, flashlight batteries failing) make her seem stupid as well.

For GSD or any dog-lover as well as crime fans

Love the relationship between K-9 Robo and his handler Cobb. Author definitely understands the male German Shepherd. Excellent character development, mystery part was OK. Learning how a K-9 works was fascinating. I really enjoyed this and will continue on to the next one. Some complained about narrator's pacing. I listened at 1.25 speed, which is my usual speed, and she sounded find to me.

Fun but a bit cliched

I enjoyed the novelty of a crime novel with a dog since I am a dog lover, but the book was quite full of stereotypes and cliches. Enjoyable but nothing spectacular.

Killing Trail, Timber Creek Book 1

This book was very well written and narrated. Nevertheless I rated the Story with 4 stars because it was sprinkled with what I consider to be category 1 profanity. That is, there were no f-bombs but their favorite four letter word was "s", with a few "sobs" thrown in. The overall story and narration out weighed that distraction, hence my overall rating is 5 stars.

Fell in Love with Robo

When I saw that this was a debut novel, I had low expectations but couldn't resist a K-9 story. I was surprised and amazed how much I enjoyed the characters and the plot.

Mattie was engaging, smart and extremely likable and of course Robo stole my heart. I am already looking forward to the next book.

I Feel Like I have Been to the Shetland Island

Ann Cleeves is a master story-teller. I found her description of Jimmy Perez to be perfectly written -- It always amazed Sandy how much Perez could pack into a small space of time. If you met him youd think the inspector was kind of slow. It was his way of thinking before he spoke so you knew that when the words came out they were just the ones hed intended. But Perez wasnt slow at all. There was a sort of magic in his asking the right questions the first time, picking up the clues in a situation, knowing when it was time to move on.

That is how the story proceeds. Slow, meandering and then it all links up with old and new stories and people on an archaeology dig site. The murders look like an accident and suicide, but come to a satisfying conclusion because the motive made sense. I was surprised by the twisty ending, but all the clues had been there for me to figure out myself. Listening to this audiobook was a step back to a slower pace and was a pure listening pleasure for me.

By the way, I have been watching the "Shetland" series based on Cleeves' books on PBS. It is a fantastic TV series. The atmosphere and scenery increase the enjoyment.

Satisfying

As I read the author's descriptions of the Shetlands I feel as though I am there. The fictional characters seem like real people living real lives. I look forward to every book of this series, and so far I have not been disappointed.

I would not describe this book as "fast paced". It goes into detail about the history of the characters, and the location. I don't do anything else when I listen to this series. It demands my full attention. I consider the hours of listening time well spent.

Narrator Gordon Griffin is excellent. His character voices are subtly different. HIs narration adds to the story. His performance adds to the story.

On the cover, this book is described as a "thriller". I'm not quite sure why that is. I don't usually read books categorized as thrillers. I imagine them to be fast paced, nerve wracking, and often too violent for my taste. This book is none of those things.

If you've enjoyed other books in the "Shetland" series, I believe you will enjoy this one. If you are looking for a story with lots of "action", you may be disappointed.

Good book, but not Cleeves' best work

I love anything Ann Cleeves writes (especially including her other series, "Vera"). This book takes place in the Shetland Islands, and that is one of the nicest parts of the story. Jimmy Perez is the lead detective, but aided by His constable Sandy, who has been the one to find the dead body of his grandmother. I liked the weaving in and out of the family story. And to some degree, the mystery of what has occurred over the years in the family is as interesting as discovering who the current murderer is. This book has a lot of atmosphere. I love hearing the story of how the islanders live, in such a remote place.
