    Boring and too cutesy
I didn't care for the narrator from the beginning which might have had an influence on the book. Found it brainless.
    Good story, Bad Reader
I love this author's mysteries, but this narrator sucks. She has terrible emphasis, and she sounds old, though the heroineis young. Thisrobs some of the pleasure from the listen and story.
Murder in a murder mystery hunt
In Murder Most Howl by Krista Davis, the ski resort town of Wagtail is hosting a murder mystery weekend, featuring part treasure hunt and part detection. The whole town gets filled with amateur sleuths, while a storm arrives, snowing everyone in. The job for everyone is to locate the murderer of Baron von Rotweiler. Then the guests are set free on the town, where the shopkeepers have clues, and each player is given a clue as well. But early the next morning, Holly, who has been left in charge of the Sugar Maple Inn for the first time by her grandmother, comes across the body of a man who appears to have frozen while sitting on a bench in the town. It doesnt take long to discover that Norm, a rich man in Wagtail, has been murdered with an injection of insulin.
Further research into Norms life reveals a man who has made many enemies, and thus the murder will be difficult to solve. Adding to all the local suspects, Holly learns that Norms first wife, a former supermodel, is visiting Wagtail for the Murder Most Howl activity. The clues keep adding up, but in all sorts of directions. Further, fake clues, scandal about people in the Wagtail community, start showing up amid the real clues about the Baron von Rotweiler, complicating the case as well as the murder game.
The book is very delightful, especially with the ambience of Wagtail, a town where pets are welcomed in all establishments, and the inn has rooms especially for cats and dogs. Clearly Davis knows her pets well, and her depictions of the dogs and cats all over the community made me really smile. I especially love Trixie, the little white terrier who adopted Holly in the first book. I especially appreciate the way the pets adopt the humans in this book. The pets come to life with so much sparkle. The book does not give the animals any types of human roles, which I appreciate, because animals have enough character in and of themselves as it is.
The mystery did get a little confusing at times, especially in telling the characters apart. The clues get a bit convoluted, but even though I didnt always follow everything clearly, I still found the book to be a whole lot of fun.
Jeanie Kanaley performs the narration of the audio version of this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Best-selling author Jonathan Kellerman has been universally hailed as the master of psychological suspense, and the blockbuster new thriller featuring Alex Delaware and Milo Sturgis confirms his status as today's preeminent practitioner of saber-sharp storytelling.
Psychologist Dr. Alex Delaware meets beautiful and emotionally fragile TV actress Zelda Chase when called upon to evaluate her five-year-old son, Ovid. Years later, Alex is unexpectedly reunited with Zelda when she is involuntarily committed after a bizarre psychotic episode. Shortly after Zelda's release, an already sad situation turns tragic when she is discovered dead on the grounds of a palatial Bel Air estate. Having experienced more than enough of LA's dark side to recognize the scent of evil, Alex turns to his friend, LAPD Lieutenant Milo Sturgis, for help in finding out who ended Zelda's broken life.
At the same time, Alex is caught up in another quest: the search for Zelda's missing son. And when other victims vanish from the same upscale neighborhood, worry turns to terror.
As Alex struggles to piece together the brief rise and steep fall of a gorgeous, talented actress, he and Milo unveil shattered dreams, the corruption of a family, and a grotesque betrayal of innocence. With each devastating revelation and damning clue, Alex's brilliant mind is challenged as never before - and his determination grows to see a killer caged and the truth set free.

"Jonathan Kellerman's psychology skills and dark imagination are a potent literary mix." (Los Angeles Times)
"Kellerman doesn't just write psychological thrillers - he owns the genre." (Detroit Free Press)

    As expected from JK
It was good, very good, but Milo enters too late and all the intricacies of the generations of people related to the "victim" was bothersome; could have been cut back by an hour or two. I love long books, but expect story on every page, not background and guessing. A little tiresome until 1/2 way point. Milo's personality is getting very predictable. Too little humor, not enough mention of Rick. I feel there is a lot of assumption that we all know all the characters and remember them perfectly. Some updates are needed all the way around.
But, I am a J Kellerman groupie and I'll follow this pair until the end.
    Always great.
It's such a simple formula: something small but reasonably dastardly happens, or seems to have happened, and either Alex calls Milo, or Milo calls Alex. They start digging -- and what follows, for 90% of the book -- any of them in this series -- is a chronicle of one or both of them going around the greater Los Angeles area, talking to people, interviewing them, ferreting out whatever facts they're looking for. The deeper they dig, the more the problem expands. More and more people come into their purview, subject themselves to our scrutiny as well as that of Alex and Milo.
There's a definite pattern to these books -- and I love them, every time.
Part of the pleasure is the guided tour aspect of it all. Somehow Kellerman manages to bring his readers into every existing area of LA, the high and mighty, down to the homeless and lost.

"[F]illed with scrumptious pie recipes, Southern charm and sassy women." (RT Book Reviews)
    Members Reviews:
    A real treat!
Let me start by saying that this book isn't supernatural in nature at all. This isn't about witches or magic or anything dark. If anyone has seen the hallmark series "the good witch," it's similar in nature. There isn't any direct "magic" or anything but more of a tongue in cheek hint that the main character has some special talents. Don't be swayed away by thinking its a witchy or supernatural theme, because it's not.
I love Ellery Adams as an author, and this is book is up there with her "books by the bay" series in terms of character development and plot development. The writing is so well done that you get teleported into this world with Ella May & her aunts. The narration was very engrossing & Cooney does a great job of pulling the listener in & pouring her heart into each character. I'm looking forward to continuing this series.
I only have one complaint & its a frustrating thing about the narration that drove me a bit nuts. The main characters name is Ella-May, but the narrator often pronounced it as "allah-may" or some variation of that with a southern drawl. That in itself isn't a problem, it's the fact that one of the aunts are named Adalane, which was often pronounced "adah-lay." When the two of these characters were in one scene it's nearly impossible to tell who is talking as the narrator speaks quickly & sounds them out with a southern drawl and both their names come out sounding almost identical. Maybe it's just a pet peeve but I had to re listen to a few scenes to understand & it was really frustrating.
    No to the Narrator
It's a shame when a good-enough book gets a bad narrator. This book is a little overwritten with a sophomoric use of adjectives, but if you like magical mystery cozies, it's a fine read and a good start to a series. But the narrator gets in the way. It's clear that Cooney is unfamiliar with many of the words, and as a consequence she mispronounces them. Her accents are horrible, which is less her fault than it is the fault of the producer for hiring her. I finished the book but I won't be coming back to the series.

The Charleston streets are dressed for the holidays in sophisticated Southern style: topiaries adorned with red ribbons, garland entwined with white lights, and poinsettias potted in gold planters. The high-class bordello in a stately historic home is certainly no exception. When Private Investigator Liz Talbot's dear friend, Olivia, swears she saw a dead body in the parlor of this bordello, one Olivia accidentally co-owns, Liz promptly comes to her aid.
With her wedding back home on Stella Maris less than a week away, Liz must juggle one elderly madam, two ex and future in-laws, three ghosts in the bordello, four giddy bridesmaids, five lovely courtesans, six suspicious patrons...and a partridge in a pear tree as she tries to keep her bridesmaid out of jail and live to walk down the aisle.

Liz Talbot Book 4 - Just Keeps Getting Better
I thoroughly enjoy this series about private investigators Liz and Nate, their crazy families, friends and a ghost. The murder mystery was well written but the backbone of these books is the mature romantic relationship and business partnership between Liz and Nate.
Nate is one of my favorite male characters, a truly strong man who adores and supports Liz, while overlooking her flaws and appreciating her strengths. Since Liz was once married to Nate's brother, there are the occasional awkward moments as their wedding day arrives.
This is a wonderful series for women over 30 who enjoy romantic suspense with lots of humor, mild sexual content and absolutely no FSOG type domination. Nate actually loves and respects Liz (and vise versa).
    I'm addicted to this series!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Definitely. Wonderfully written, interesting and a fun cozy read.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    Yes!
Have you listened to any of Loretta Rawlinss other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The climax when they were finally married
    Any additional comments?
Living in South Carolina, just an hour south along the coast from Charleston, I love and can totally picture where Ms. Boyer takes us. Liz is a fantastic, likable, HUMAN character. she's made mistakes, isn't perfect and her and her partner make the perfect private detective partnership.
I enjoyed the seasonal setting and descriptions of the decorations, homes, downtown Charleston and Stella Maris. Finally these two lovebirds get married and it's fun to see them juggle getting ready for a wedding and working a case.
The plot was great, and Ms. Boyer writes flawlessly. everything just flows.

    Preposterous
So, if I got this right - the cute, petite MIT educated genius hacker goes home with the ex cop and proceeds to become his live-in '50's style cook/housekeeper and incidental Internet assistant; the 12-year old kidnap victim is returned by the terrorist drug lord not only unharmed but entertained and sated with ice cream; the hero gets the motorcycle and hot car - I'd have to have paid attention to get the rest of the boy entertainment value. Not being a boy, and never liking fairy tales, I was SO not impressed. This one's going on the "lame list."
    Decently Hokey
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
If someone told me that Andy Taylor left Mayberry and started a PI business in Colorado, this is the kind of story I would expect to hear. Almost squeaky clean, the good guys are really good and the bad guys are still pretty good.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The story lacked depth in the plot and character development. You never really feel that the characters in the story are in any real danger. Still, I found myself rooting for the good guys, so it does have some redeeming qualities.
Did Mikael Naramore do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
I had no problem distinguishing between the characters, but the nasal quality of his delivery was a little jarring.
Do you think The Grave Man needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
The book is relatively short, Flesh out the characters more and add some depth to the plot and I would happily revisit these characters again.
    Any additional comments?
This book has a very similar structure to Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes series. If you haven't read it, I would highly recommend that series over this one.
    Good not great
cost to much for such a short book need to lower price. wouldn't mind finishing the series. although I prefer more action.
    Sophomoric
Unbelievable fantasy fiction. Maybe a good read for the 10 year old. Kept hoping it would get better, but no.
    Excellent overall - loved it
I loved the story and the characters and the style of the narration. Great twist at the end.

    Amazingly Written!
Loved it! 1st Mary Burton book that I've purchased. I will continue on with the rest of the Morgan's collection. Mary is very talented at what she does, and the narrator was also great. Thanks!
    Tricky!
Had me going till the end! Enjoyed the story, suspense & ending! A good read for all!
A good romantic thriller, heavy on the thriller
This novel does a great job of explaining the consequences of spouse abuse, the constant fears, the comforting rituals (such as locking your door three times just to be sure), the hyper-vigilance, the inability to let down your barriers so others can get close. The main character was an abused woman, and her ex nearly killed her by stabbing her 23 times. Her ex-husband is supposed to be dead...then why is all the torment happening again?
The heroine is seeing lots of things, some small, some not small at all, such as the movers packing up her house while she's at work. And she has no plans to move! Keys are not where she left them, flowers sent anonymously for her wedding anniversary, the sense of being watched, of being followed, flat tires for no reason. The author does a good job of building the suspense, of getting into the heads of the major players and taking the reader along for the ride.
There is also a romantic undercurrent in this book, and while that's important to the story, it's not the paramount theme. I found myself liking the book quite a bit, and I didn't realize that it's part of a series, this one is book three. It works as a stand alone, however, even though there are references to events from previous books. I think most thriller fans will like this...it's not the best one I've ever read, but it's pretty good.
The narration was distracting for me. Coleen Marlo over-accentuates her hard consonants, so a D sounds like a T, especially at the end of words or sentences. Words like 'marriage' get shoved into one syllable to become 'merge'. Her southern accents are a joke, as are most of her male voices. I would classify her efforts as more speaking than acting, and not speaking all that well IMO. But if you can live with the poor narrative quality, I think you'll like this book.
Nice but predictable twist at the end
This novel is a good but predictable suspense thriller with just average narration. Mary Burton writes mostly romance novels, but this is far more thriller than romance.

Love the TV adaptation; not the audiobook

Possibly the weakest of the series
In this book the author uses too much I think of the established patterns in the previous stories. The book reads oddly formulaic. The performance as usual from Penelope Keith is wonderful but the material is fairly reasonable at best
    Very entertaining series
Enjoying this series. Well written with good character development. Immerses readers into plots. Thanks for the journey into the English countryside.
    Love this leading lady
I love this series! Agatha is a leading lady you can really support! Hooked on this series.

    Not a fun read
What disappointed you about Agatha Raisin and the Wellspring of Death?

At age 26 Agatha Raisin has already come a long way. She has clawed her way up since leaving the Birmingham slum where she was born. She's lost her Birmingham accent, run away from her drunken husband, and found a job at a public relations office as a secretary. Then her boss asks Agatha to go to the home of Sir Bryce Teller to tell him that he is soon to be arrested for the murder of his wife and that the agency no longer wants to represent him.
Teller, impressed with the pugnacious Agatha, asks her to handle PR for him and even offers her an office and tells her she can hire a staff. Certainly the best thing Agatha can do for her first client is to find out who really murdered his wife and clear his name. And with her wits and gumption, Agatha sets out to do just that.
New York Times best-selling author M. C. Beaton's character Agatha Raisin is beloved by millions, and this brand-new short story takes us back to where it all began with Agatha's first case.

    Agatha's Origins
Charming short story explaining Agatha Raisin's first case and how she got her start. Hearing about her sad upbringing certainly gives one more sympathy for the character. It's easy to see why she had to develop the hard shell she has in the series. She's always seemed a tough nut with a heart of gold.
    A Nice Tease
This was a nice tease considering a new Agatha Raisin book will be released since. I enjoyed this book. Agatha was born with spunk!
    Fun!
Really enjoyed this short that told us how Agatha got her start. Clever, fun, straight up Agatha. A quick and infinitely enjoyable read.
    boring
the idea of the book was good but it felt like it was a 500 page book condensed into a 50 page book. everything went so right for Agatha and she was so amazing at everything. boring no character development
    Where It All Began!
I've been reading the Agatha Raisin mysteries for the last few years and I've loved every one of them. Agatha is big on spirit and determination and regardless of your age she sure is a great model for the strong, confident woman with a "can-do" attitude! When I heard M.C. Beaton was writing a story about her first case, I was excited. I wanted to know what Agatha was like in her 20s!
In this story we get to meet Agatha when she is 26. She is just starting out at a ad agency as a general "dogsbody" and has quite made it yet. She gets thrust in the middle of a murder case, and alike to her cases later on, she bumbles around and gets everything right. She's hesitant to begin with, but her strong passion to make something of herself shines through and she starts to show the Agatha Raisin spirit that we all love!
Agatha Raisin is my all time favorite sleuth and I simply loved her first story. I'm hoping maybe one day M.C. Beaton will write more stories of her younger days, as this one was a delight.
If you're a new fan to the Agatha Raisin mysteries this would be the perfect place to start.
I enjoyed Alison Larkin's narration. Penelope Keith is my all-time favorite narrator of this series but Alison's narration was quite good too.
Definitely a A+ listen and I can't wait for the new book, Dishing the Dirt!

    Publisher's Summary:
Lawyer Andy Carpenter is surprised when Willie Millier, Andy's partner at their dog rescue operation, the Tara Foundation, calls to say the alarm has gone off at the foundation building. There has clearly been a break-in, and a dog has been stolen.
All of the dogs that the Tara Foundation rescues are given collars with GPS tracking capabilities, so Andy and Willie know they'll be able to track down the missing dog. They follow the signal to a house in downtown Paterson, and sure enough, the dog is there...standing right next to a dead body. The man had been gruesomely murdered mere minutes earlier. Could it be a coincidence? Or could the dog theft somehow be connected to the killing?
Andy takes the dog safely back to the foundation building, and that should be the end of it, but his curiosity - and his desire to keep the dog from further harm - won't let him stop there. Andy finds himself looking into the circumstances surrounding the break-in and the dog theft, and what he starts to uncover makes him believe that the cops may have just arrested the wrong man for the crime.
Once again David Rosenfelt has written a fast-paced and clever mystery with his characteristic blend of humor, larger-than-life characters, and propulsive plotting.
    Critic Reviews:
"Narrator Grover Gardner is once again perfect as the cocky, headstrong lawyer.... Gardner's performance is seamless as he delivers an exhilarating listening experience." (

Too Many Stores of the Same Ilk
David Rosenfelt has a good thing going -- using the same basic format for every story. That however, is the downfall for me. I wont need to read anymore of his books. . . the sameness just destroys any interest I might have had for the drama and characters. This one was just a middling, average story that wasn't all that engaging. Offer something different and I might buy it -- but not until.
    Entertaining and Funny
I love who-done-it's that fit in humor and this one did it well. And how can you go wrong with an obnoxious leading player who's a rich attorney who loves dogs, owns an animal shelter and adopts an 8 year old boy? A great audio book for sure.
    Loved it!
I have listened to the whole series, and this was a welcomed addition. David Rosenfelt has done another great job of keeping all our favorite characters alive and fresh! His wonderful imagination keeps new stories coming. Grover Gardener "is" the voice of all the characters in all the books. Another narrator would not be able to pull it off. David & Grover keep them coming & I'll keep on listening! I highly recommend this book and the entire series to anyone who enjoys light mysteries.
This series is like "Candy" for me
    I love this series...
My genre is mystery, with court room legal thrillers at the top of my list. Andy Carpenter is a mix of humor, mystery, court room drama, with the fun of his sense of humor. I always look forward to the next one. I have all of the books in this series. The characters are well developed and I love them all. Total entertainment for me.
    Another good story
The stories and lives of Andy's friends effected by the dogs who come into their lives.
