Important tools for change

Those who are called to make a difference in the world, to improve the human condition no matter how targeted the benefit, may not have the business, management or financial skills to create sustainable change and fund their mission in the long term. Some nascent organizations, formed from the political and social impetus of recent events, may be just now looking around figuring out how to manage for the long haul. This is a book for them. I wish the tools identified in this book had been known to many of us in the days just after January 20, 2017. Hoping this book can help us all be the change we wish to see.

The "Rough Guide" for Social Startups

Kathleen's survey of social startups provides one of the most comprehensive overviews of the social landscape I have ever read. It's such a nice way to learn more about how the best got that way. Eye-opening ways to learn more about how to start something and succeed! My favorite part is her line that as much as private business can teach social startups, there's much the private sector can learn from them too!

Great, easy to read guide to starting your own non-profit. Will become the "bible" in the field.

finally -- real business literature for non-profits! Janus has written the perfect guide for startup non-profit organizations, and she illustrates her important and relevant suggestions for how to get funding, scale, and measure your impact with thoughtful and at times hilarious stories.

Thereâs the mythology of entrepreneurship and then thereâs reality. The myth makes for sensational moments in the Social Network or Shark Tank. The reality is great businesses are not built in a 90 second montage with uplifting music. Schramm helps cut through the fictionalized version of going from idea to successful venture. Further, he provides a valuable service to the fossils who often teach in our business schools. Personally, Iâve been involved in several successful start-ups and one flame out. The only to company to fail had the most detailed business plan; I don't think that's a coincidence. So, the admonition that âfailing to plan is planning to failâ still holds true for many things, but Schramm ably demonstrates that a âplanâ is a poor excuse for hard work, flexibility, and smarts.

Classic Schramm...Unconventional and Inspiring!

Carl has an audacious habit of questioning convention...and we should all be thankful for it! This book goes further then obvious questions and pushes convention aside and points directly to problems and solutions at the heart of starting and sustaining a business in today's climate. Written in the same tone as his lectures, straight forward with humorous anecdotes that drive home the point, Schramm is a genius at communicating essentials and making the daunting attainable. Great great book!

One of the Greatest Americans

Great story very much personalized by Sam Walton telling the story of the beginning and history of Wal-Mart from its beginnings till his death. At the same time almost an Autobiography of Sam. Highly recommended reading especially if you like American business and are a devoted Capitalist.

Could Not Put Book Down

The way Mr. Sam Walton wrote about his life made me feel like I was there experiencing it all with him. For entrepreneurs, he gave many pearls of wisdom that one should not miss. The way he described the Wal-Mart culture is akin to the military culture that has existed for hundreds of years and are all true.

Great book, easy read

Great book, easy read. I've learned everything about Sam, but not only that, ive learned about entrepreneurship, marketing, public speaking, and much more. After reading this book I definitely respect and appreciate the hard work that went into making what Wal-Mart

is today. Classic American story of hustle,grit, and competition. Sam Walton was not a saint, he was a man driven by his passion and this book does a great job of conveying his story.

Great Book, gotta love the title.

I do find the title ironic, but Walmart the company was truly made in small town America, Sam Walton starting out with just a few stores hired some smart people and created a model that worked around the country. There are a lot of great concepts in this book if you can uncover them, you could also find them in various business "guru" books. Walton's story is similar to those as Ray Kroc, or Walt Disney and many other entrepreneurs who were able to get a good idea and turn it into a good model with the help of some smart people, I really appreciate Walton's ability to realize that there are a lot smarter people than him that can make his company great. One of the practices I loved that Sam kept bringing up was that he always said all his great ideas he copied from someone else (usually his competitor) I thought that was great, laugh every time I hear it.

Tells the story about the man who created a powerful business from scratch. Learn about his quirky personality that had made his so successful. He is truly one of a kind. You cannot find a better biography than this to read every day.

Lots of valuable input in this book. Narration would have been perfect minus all the dang referencing (Williams, 2018) being read along. Proper citation interrupted and cluttered an otherwise brilliant listening experience.

Fantastic case study, involving a real product company (HP)

This is the _perfect_ book to share with executive sponsors and stakeholders. It is short (114 pages), but it covers the issues well - including technical issues, and makes the point that leadership cannot "manage by metrics" - they need to understand the technical issues, at least at a high level. A great case study because HP has both server software and embedded software - i.e., products - this is not just a story of websites.

Very clear and concise book that covers a lot of DevOps and CI/CD concepts in a manner that is easy to consume. A good book to pair with Lean Enterprise and the DevOps Hnadbook.

Magnificent

A game plan to maximize business impact through modernizing engineering systems. Reading Leading the Transformation was like reading our own play book used at Microsoft. If big companies applied these techniques it would be revolutionary to the software industry. Forcing quality with a single branch and immediate integration on the trunk is a difficult and necessary step. In addition running thousands of automated tests across a team of hundreds takes specialized infrastructure and processes. Good stuff..

Pretty good, very repetitive

This was a goo case study of how HP home printer firmware division rolled out agile. It was also very repetitive.

Straightforward

Quick and simple read for executives who need to understand the importance of continuous improvement. I highly recommend it. Enjoy!

IT WORKED OUT!!

I cannot recommend this book more highly. After reading this book, I had a whole new perspective on life, on money, and on what makes me happy. I couldn't put it down and then when I was done I couldn't stop telling people about it. My sisters, my friends, coworkers. This book shows you why a side hustle is not only attainable but necessary and most of all fun!

Susie has a way with words, and I can't wait for her next book.

A fun pragmatic read

This is a great book. We all have side passions and rarely give them the time they deserve. The book teaches us to cultivate our core passions from seedlings to saplings to their own businesses. Chock full of examples, interviews and personal stories that people can easily relate to. Since reading, I've reworked my priorities, starting small with some new endeavors and have renewed excitement for the future.
