Poor sound quality

Really disappointed. Half way through this story Im about to give up because I cant hear it properly! I listen to lots of things on Audible and its usually fine.

sound quality very quiet, struggled to hear what was going on! storyline a little predictable but enjoyed the classic gothic thriller aspect of it.

Couldn't switch off the last few chapters

Excellent narration created all the atmosphere. Good story with good twists and a good ending.

Fast Pace Mystery Thriller

Fast pace mystery/thriller worth the credit and very good start for Author Liz Lawler. Small critic, I was looking for a little more in the character development, although the storyline interesting and creepy, I didnt find that I felt much for any of the characters. Im betting with a bit more experience the authors next book will be even better. Narration was very well done by Zara Ramm. Ill be on the look-out for more from both! Well done!

Darn it! I was hoping...

I really wish the big reveal was something different - more interesting! BUT, even with that, I loved the characters in this story - they each were very well developed and believable. I had a theory of what was really going on, and I was wrong. I liked my version better though haha! But seriously, it does all come together in the end. The narration was great and she distinguished between each character well. Overall a decent psychological thriller. I would definitely read more from the author :-)

Fizzled out

It started off very promising, but just faded into silliness. I was waiting for some kind of mind blowing twist ending that never came. I do love the narrator though, and I was never bored.

EXCELLENT ALL AROUND

I listen to 1-3 audiobooks a week and eagerly await my pre-orders - so go I through mystery/thrillers much too quickly. That is why I was particularly pleased to find this book to be one of the better mystery/thrillers Ive read in quite a while. The events unfold satisfyingly - nothing too subtle or too obvious, and the character development is complete and engaging. Additionally, the writing and storyline are both polished - even with the slew of new mystery/thrillers available, most are lacking and clumsy in execution. I do wish the ending was longer so we could really learn in detail how everyone got what they deserved - but it was nonetheless still satisfying. I very much look forward to more of Liz Lawlers books. Highly recommended - the summary doesnt do it justice, its absolutely worth the credit.

Although I enjoyed this book and the story, did not find it as good as the last one. Still a recommended book to read.

Coben continues to deliver.

Harlan Coben is one of my favourite authors. This is another fast paced, entertaining reads with one hell of a twist. You won't be disappointed.

The plot was interesting and easy to follow. I liked the characters and the relationships and dialogue.

What a twist I really did not see it coming until part way through the last chapter. Harlan Cohen is one of my go to authors when I need to be challenged.

A disappointment

I bought this based purely on the rave reviews, having never encountered the author's work before, but just couldn't get past the first hour.

This is not at all the kind of book I was expecting; it reads like the -very uninteresting- memoirs of a television writer (and going back and re-reading those rave reviews, I suppose that is indeed partly true), and I'm led to believe that this literary device is meant to be somehow "meta", or "post" or even witty!

Sadly, for this reader, it's none of those, it's merely self-indulgent and alienating.

The narrator's flat delivery does little to enliven the dreariness.

The Unemployed Detective

What did you like most about The Word Is Murder?

Great story line, and an unusual approach, so it's part autobiography and part fiction. I liked Horowitz's musings on the world of literature, film and TV. I'm guessing that a lot of of his anecdotes involving famous names are true. And there are probably some in-jokes that went below my radar. Weaved into this is a great story involving an unemployed detective investigating murder with the help, or hindrance, of Horowitz. Some red herrings, plenty of clues to whodunnit and some laugh out loud moments as well I have enjoyed Horowitz's other novels, including his Magpie Murders and takes on Sherlock Holmes and James Bond, and his TV series,such as Foyle's War. I'm even tempted to try his Alex Rider novels for teenagers!I could also see this working as a TV programme, which I'd definitely watch.

Noir thriller set in and around OSLO

Nora Klemetsen and Henning Juul (both journalists) used to be married. The had a son, Jonas â for whose sake they maintained a civil relationship until they eventually split. Jonas was killed in a fire in the apartment where he was staying with his father â who had perhaps drunk a little too much on the evening in question before he fell asleep. The fire was, though, deliberately set. Henning takes a sabbatical from his work to probe who had killed his sonâ He suspects the involvement of Tori Pulli â a somewhat dubious property developer with an unsavoury criminal past. Henning was investigating him, and the fire could have been his ârevengeâ. Pulli denies he set the fire, but does a deal with Henning. He was falsely imprisoned for a murder he did not commit â and offers the name of the person who ordered the fire in return for Henning establishing the truth about his imprisonment. Henning fulfils his side of the bargain, but Pulli is murdered in prison. Henning carries on his investigation with the âhelpâ of the enforcers of the Oslo underworld â a far from savoury bunch.

Meanwhile Nora is approached by Hugo Refsdal, the husband of Hedda Hellberg â with whom she had shared a flat at university several years previously. No more for fear of a spoiler.

No doubt that Cursed is a very well written (and very well translated) book in the best traditions of Nordic noir.

What did you like best about this story?

Very different from books I have listen to. I love addition of biblical history intertwined with mythology. The pacing is great and the action kept me on the edge of my seat. Definitely recommend .

Slow start, great story

Yes, just to catch the things I missed the first time. Knowing how the story goes now, I will see the things I didn't notice the first time.

What did you like best about this story?

There was more to the story than I expected. There was multiple types of characters that you don't always see in other book series.

Which character as performed by Wyatt Baker was your favorite?

Loved them all. Each character had their own voice, which brought them to life for me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

At first no, but once the story got going yes. I would find myself listening throughout the day while working.

The Calling Tree: A Tale of Immortality

The Calling Tree is definitely not what I expected; it was a pleasant surprise. When it comes to immortality, Waller writes in a completely different way. I found myself actually rooting for the bad guys for a bit. This is a great start to a new series. The mystery and suspense will keep readers on the edge of their seat. It took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I couldnt stop listening! I loved The Calling Tree and recommend it to all readers. The overall rating for me is 4 stars for the story and 4 stars for the narration.

Great Fun

I never saw the big screen adaptation of the Destroyer. From what I've heard, that's no big loss. In any event, I'm a late arrival to this action-comedy series by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir. But after listening to just this one installment, I understand why the series is so popular.

The plot is rife with Cold War intrigue, with a few twists to keep you guessing. It concerns a kidnapped general from the People's Army, and his attractive concubine. Remo and Chiu are dispatched to resolve this international incident.

Remo Williams is a regular guy. No, make that an exceptional guy. He's an old-school adventurer who happens to be learning a deadly martial art from a wizened master. Chiu isn't just exceptional--he's pretty much superhuman. We get some background on him in this book, concerning his native village in Korea, and the art he has mastered. He's also a hilarious smartass, who kept me snickering periodically.

There is an affection between these two heroes--that of a teacher for his gifted student, and the student for his incomparable master. And yet, we learn Chiu is prepared to kill Remo if ordered to by those they work for. Lucky for both Remo and the reader, this doesn't happen.

So whether you like action or humor, but especially if you like both, this book gets a strong recommendation from me.

(The actor's performance was great. Chiu has some great lines and they are delivered spot-on.)

Great job by the reader

I read this book when it was first printed back in the 1970s. Yes, I am an old guy but I still enjoy The Destroyer. I especially enjoyed this audio version of an old favorite book. The reader, Gray Gleason, does a masterful job of creating distinct voices for each of the characters and his ability to convey the emotions of each character is amazing. If you are an old fan of the series or a newcomer, I expect you will enjoy this audio book. I look forward to future books in this series done by Speaking Volumes.

More romance than crime thriller...

Good narration, but the story was lacking suspense. Not to the standard of earlier books from the same Author.

It has all of the usual Karen Rose hallmarks:

Beautiful people with a damaged past getting together beautifully and doing beautiful things to each other...

Villains who are dastardly, although in this book they are mild compared with her previous works.

And an increasingly complex web of connected good characters - all related to one another in some way...

Not her finest book, but still an ok way to pass 18 hrs or so in the car. I didn't feel like I wanted the time back, unlike some audio books I have listened to.

I have only tried the Audible edition because I prefer audio books.

These books are similar the books by Mary Burton and Cynthia Eden. The all write tightly crafted thrillers with strong story lines and interesting characters and unique settings.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Many fantastic scenes in the recording. Funny ones like Holly, Dylan and Taylor in the barn. Holly is tiny but mighty. Heartbreaking things like the scene in the hospital room between Clay and Frederick but my favourite scene is between Ford and Taylor in the waiting room.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, the book is emotionally vying from funny, heartrending and scary. The scene in the barn with Holly and Dylan made me laugh, the scene in the hospital where plans are made to find the missing girls and capture the culprit.

Poor Narrator

Loved this book since first released in hardback, and never found fault in anything. This version had me incredibly annoyed with the voices and the emphasis put on certain words and sentences. Got the book out and checked and no it was not the sentence it was the way that words were emphasized. Love Alastair MacLean but don't think I'll buy any more.

One of the best books I've read and reread and repeated for a zillion times, and Mr Oliver has done 200% justice to it. Very well narated!

Edge of your seat thriller!

An edge of your seat thriller from the sadly missed 'Daddy' of all thriller writers!!

The wait is over

This story has been with me for the best part of 45 years. For whatever reason it resonated with me from the moment I read the first page. An outstanding story written by one of the best authors of his time. I've waited for an audio version since before my son was born...he is now at university. One of the beauties of a great story well written is that the characters come to life through our imagination ... Mr Oliver does an ok job. He doesn't feel quite right for my image of John Talbot but he tells the story clearly and efficiently.

Have you listened to any of Jonathan Olivers other performances? How does this one compare?

The Maclean Classic given the audible treatment. This delivery is much better from Oliver, although it has to be said that there are much fewer foreign accents in this book, when compared to the poor performance in 'The Guns of Navarone" where he really struggled. The producers/editor should take a some of the blame for that too. At the very end of the book, his narration (under the circumstances) is very good. However, he still needs to work on his fluidity.

Is it work a credit?... Yes.

Quick moving

Rock Mofina has yet to let me down. He writes with with obvious knowledge about the newspaper business and the conflict with police procedures.

Every fear

Enjoyed the whole book. It kept you wondering until the very end of the book

Pressure packed and suspenseful

Every fear is the second installment in the Jason Wade series. Its another bang up mystery with a twist, told from the young reporter's perspective.

This time fading circulation adds to the tension as Jason's editor is as big of a jerk as I have ever encountered in fictional. Perhaps it was a bit overdone , but through that on going conflict we learn about the pressures in the newsroom.

This story is a bit of a mind bender. It reveals how easily evidence fueled by suspicions can be so easily misinterpreted. (Something we should all keep in mind in this political climate.)

Even though this series exposes a reporter's world, it cannot do so without being every bit a police procedural.

5 star suspense mystery/thriller!!

Every Fear is the 2nd novel in the journalist Jason Wade series by Rick Mofina. It is a well written and fast paced kidnapping mystery that builds suspense very well. Paul Costanzo does a wonderful job of narrating. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Every Fear is a fast paced easy listen!

This book is very well written and fast paced. It's every parent's nightmare come true. Woman runs into a store, leaves her infant son with a known teenage girl who gets distracted and the child is kidnapped.

There is an equal balance of police procedural and investigative reporting. A few intense scenes as the mother almost dies from injuries sustained during her attempt to rescue her baby.

There is another story going on simultaneously, that of the kidnappers. There is a really twisted story there but things don't work out the way you think they will.

I really like this author who pulls from his own experiences as a journalist.

Paul Costanzo does an excellent job narrating.
