Title: The Cloven Viscount

Subtitle: Translated by Archibald Colquhoun

Author: Italo Calvino

Narrator: Edoardo Ballerini

Format: Unabridged

Length: 2 hrs and 34 mins

Language: English

Release date: 12-05-17

Publisher: Recorded Books

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

In this fantastically macabre tale, the separate halves of a nobleman split in two by a cannonball go on to pursue their own independent adventures.

In a battle against the Turks, Viscount Medardo of Terralba is bissected lengthwise by a cannonball. One half of him returns to his feudal estate and takes up a lavishly evil life. Soon the other, virtuous half appears. The two halves become rivals for the love of the same woman, fight a bloody duel, and achieve a miraculous resolution.

Now available in an independent volume for the first time, this deliciously bizarre novella is Calvino at his most devious and winning.

A Tale Of Two Heads

Ok, this is an early work of Calvino's and as such it lacks the polish of his latter works. It does show the influence of some of the lesser known Italian masters of magical realism such as Aldo Palazzeschi. Yet this apparently whimsical fairy tale of a knight cleaved into two separate but incomplete personae is as relevant today as it was in the early fifties. It operates on many levels, an allegory of Italian politiccs, the cold war struggle between east and west etc.

Of course we can see the beginnings of Calvino's interest in the role of myth to the writer, the philosophical questions of good versus evil, the existence of evil and the struggle between controlling both of these these impulses, think of a modern day Plato and his tale of the charioteer. It is difficult to form an attachment to the story until midway through book when the "good knight" makes an arrival. It is my personal interest in certain writers that the weight of their greatest works makes reading their lesser ones deserving of that effort, but then again I would be happy to read a laundry list if Hemingway wrote it.

Distracted by typographical errors

This was not as entertaining or thought-provoking as, for example, The Castle of Crossed Destinies, and the Kindle version contained a sufficient number of typos to be distracting.

Entire series rating

The writing is quite jumbled at times. I agree with others that have commented that the books were too short. I think it would have been better as a trilogy.

This last book was mostly just filler, war descriptions, it seemed just to fill pages. The beginning was a bit hard to follow, like the author was, again, trying to fill pages.

If I could give one pointer to the author, I would like to have the story a bit more complex. From the first, I felt it was a bit disjointed, and some parts could have been more elaborate, while others were so elaborate they were boring, example, war descriptions in this sixth installment.

All in all, the story itself was quite interesting, and for the creativity of that alone deserves the four stars. Less books, more length.

I would still recommend it.

a good wrap to the series

It took a little while to get into this one, but once it got going it was great. This series has been interesting all the way through,a completely different concept. I loved the characters, good and bad. They had great depth, you learn to love and feel with them through their journey.

Outstanding, beautiful, thrilling, heart-wrenching! An absolute must read!

Absolutely outstanding conclusion to this wonderful saga. The emotional toll this saga has taken on me is indescribable and it is definitely something I shall never forget.

deserved a better ending

Spoilers! Too many war scenes. Too much devastation. And to make matters worse the main characters he killed. I felted robbed after reading so much death and destruction it couldn't have a happier ending.

Amazing Series!

Awesome book to end an awesome series... For now. These books are unique and paint a vivid world with amazing landscapes, cities, cultures, and characters that are fleshed out perfectly. If you are on the edge and not sure if you feel like reading this series... Don't hesitate. These books are a breath of fresh air! I cannot wait until the author decides to come back to the world of Moth for another adventure!

Title: Norma

Subtitle: A Novel

Author: Sofi Oksanen

Narrator: Fiona Hardingham

Format: Unabridged

Length: 7 hrs and 39 mins

Language: English

Release date: 09-05-17

Publisher: Random House Audio

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

From the internationally best-selling author of Purge and When the Doves Disappeared, a spellbinding new novel set in present-day Helsinki about a young woman with a fantastical secret who is trying to solve the mystery of her mother's death.

When Anita Naakka jumps in front of an oncoming train, her daughter, Norma, is left alone with the secret they have spent their lives hiding: Norma has supernatural hair, sensitive to the slightest changes in her mood - and the moods of those around her - moving of its own accord, corkscrewing when danger is near. And so it is her hair that alerts her, while she talks with a strange man at her mother's funeral, that her mother may not have taken her own life. Setting out to reconstruct Anita's final months - sifting through puzzling cell phone records, bank statements, video files - Norma begins to realize that her mother knew more about her hair's powers than she let on: a sinister truth beyond Norma's imagining. As Sofi Oksanen leads us ever more deeply into Norma's world, weaving together past and present, she gives us a dark family drama that is a searing portrait of both the exploitation of women's bodies and the extremes to which people will go for the sake of beauty.

A Painful and Beautiful Novel

Oksanen has traditionally written about Soviet-Estonian life with the eloquence of Dostoevsky or Tolstoy while (properly) demonizing the Soviets. Norma is a unique and interesting change for her that still remains wistful and amazing in her detail. There's no reason to not buy this book if you have enjoyed the rest of her works like I have. It's unique, for sure, but worth your time if you enjoy this author like I do.

Honestly? Finland's greatest author since Linna, hands down. A.H. Tammsaare would be proud, too.

Bad Hair

Norma has a secret she shares with only one person, her mother. When her mother takes her own life, Norma is devastated. A disturbing encounter at her mother's funeral leads Norma to question whether it was in fact a suicide and motivates her to investigate. Norma's secret, magical hair, serves her well. Her hair heightens her sensitivity to smells, provides her insight into moods and feelings, provides her with the ability to communicate with the dead and to detect lies. When smoked, the hair has narcotic properties as well. Needless to say, a nefarious global syndicate is interested in the source of the mystical hair that it appears Norma's mom was selling. Norma's investigation leads her into an international criminal conspiracy masked by the frivolity of beauty and salons.

While the author has some good points about the exploitation of women, it isn't the cunning feminist manifesto I was expecting. It is bogged down with two many plots and poorly developed characters. The pacing is uneven and the writing is, at times, bad. Not sure how much is attributable to the translation but at times the many plots get convoluted and confusing and any urgency regarding Norma's situation peters out. I don't mind weird or magical realism for that matter but this book is both too much and too little. The ending failed to satisfy and I was left strangely empty. There were some promising ideas that were never came to fruition.
