    Magic or mutation?
Jamie Bonifacio lives between two worlds; the world of the terrestrial and the world of the aquatic.
Whether the result of being cursed at birth by a Santeria Priestess, or the result of a radical genetic mutation, Jamie possesses the preternatural ability to dive to incredible depths, and stay at those depths for hours.
How many hours? Even Jamie isn't sure.
When, through no fault of his own, Jamie finds himself at odds with the law, he realizes that his only chance to remain free is to take refuge on and under the sea.
Equipped with a 22 foot sailboat, sparse sailing skills, and an audacity possessed by few, Jamie will take flight toward the ancestral home that lies across the Caribbean Sea.
What Jamie doesn't know is that before him lie 2,000 sea miles of hurricane winds, tortuous tropical sun, castaways and pirates.

    Publisher's Summary:
The republic faces annihilation, despite the vigilance of Galharrow's Blackwings. When a raven tattoo rips itself from his arm to deliver a desperate message, Galharrow and a mysterious noblewoman must investigate a long dead sorcerer's legacy. But there is a conspiracy within the citadel: traitors, flesh-eaters and the ghosts of the wastelands seek to destroy them, but if they cannot solve the ancient wizard's paradox, the Deep Kings will walk the earth again, and all will be lost.
The war with the Eastern Empire ended in stalemate some 80 years ago thanks to Nall's Engine, a wizard-crafted weapon so powerful even the Deep Kings feared it. The strike of the engine created the Misery - a wasteland full of ghosts and corrupted magic that now forms a no-man's-land along the frontier. But when Galharrow investigates a frontier fortress, he discovers complacency bordering on treason: then the walls are stormed, and the engine fails to launch.
Galharrow escapes only because of the preternatural magical power of the noblewoman he was supposed to be protecting. Together they race to the capital to unmask the traitors and restore the republic's defences. Far across the Misery, a vast army is on the move, as the empire prepares to call the republic's bluff.
Blackwing is a gritty epic fantasy for fans of Mark Lawrence, Scott Lynch and Daniel Polansky.
    Read by Colin Mace.

It turns out I like grimdark fantasy after all
I chose this book after an Amazon recommendation, which I don't usually do, but I thought I'd take a punt on a new author.
This book was great! Gripping story, characters that develop more and more as the story goes on - Galharrow, the narrator, unfurls into a really memorable lead character, who you want to spend more time with.
I've previously tried other novels described to be as 'Grimdark' - which seems to mean that the main character is a bit of a nasty git.
I read Paul Hoffman's trilogy, but thought it peaked with Left Hand of God. I enjoyed it though.
I wanted to like Mark Lawrence. The plot kept me turning pages to the end of each book, but I found the lead character two dimensional and tiresome by the end.
This was everything I wanted those books to be! It blew them out of the water.
The premise reminded me of Chronicles of the Black Company, but with more vivid storytelling.
I also really loved that, while there's lots of potential for more books in the series, the narrative of this one finished its ark with the book. I'll be waiting eagerly to read the next one, but it's great not to always need that to finish the story.
The narrator was really good. A very convincing Galharrow who can carry off everyone else's voice too.
I didn't realise Nen was an Aussie though...
    Excellent grimdark
Mark Lawrence better up his game or this lad will be king of grimdark. Can't wait for more - hope they keep the same narrator too
    It's like Gemmell grew up.
A really enjoyable dark fantasy tale. Complex characters, a few nice twists, and a nicely original fantasy world. Looking forward to the second one. The reader was a brilliant piece of casting. His voice fits perfectly.
    Gripping tale, highly recommend
A great story, interesting characters, gripping events and intriguing metaphysics.
    I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Minecraft: The Island by Max Brooks.
Two editions, two narrators, one thrilling story. Enjoy this version read by Jack Black, and then be sure to check out the other available version narrated by Samira Wiley.
The first official Minecraft novel! In the tradition of iconic adventures like Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island, the Number One New York Times best-selling author of World War Z tells the story of a hero - stranded in the world of Minecraft - who must unravel the secrets of a mysterious island in order to survive.
Washed up on a beach, the lone castaway looks around the shore. 'Where am I? Who am I? And why is everything made of blocks?' But there isn't much time to soak up the sun. It's getting dark, and there's a strange new world to explore!
The top priority is finding food. The next is not becoming food. Because there are others out there on the island...like the horde of zombies that appear after night falls. Crafting a way out of this mess is a challenge like no other. Who could build a home while running from exploding creepers, armed skeletons, and an unstoppable tide of hot lava? Especially with no help except for a few makeshift tools and sage advice from an unlikely friend: a cow.
In this world, the rules don't always make sense, but courage and creativity go a long way. There are forests to explore, hidden underground tunnels to loot, and undead mobs to defeat. Only then will the secrets of the island be revealed.

    I Loved It
I Loved It.It Was Amazing And That's all I have to say so it was amazing also will they be a second noval? I hope there is
Great Perspective in a Strange World
Max Brooks has taken another idea and turned it into something a bit different from the usual material created from it. First it was Zombies, now Minecraft.
I'm not even a fan of the game but the combo of Max Brooks and Jack Black tempted me in and I'm so glad I did.
Without giving too much away, it's a very interesting story told from the perspective of a game character. It has great self awareness and the development of the character is very immersive. Almost putting you in the exact situation.
If you were considering it, buy it. It's a great listen. Jack Blacks performance is superb and I hope he does more.
    Loved the narration
Very good narrator, story and overall feeling. A great book all in all. 10/ 10

So far, the series is great, definitely not predictable, & well worth reading.
    4 & 1/2 stars
Very entertaining! This was definitely better than book 1. This one ended up being a can't put it down read, with much better flow. There were a lot of editing errors that bogged down the flow a bit. I stayed up way later than I should have, trying to get thru the book. The characters are developing/evolving, with a lot of snarky attitude thrown in. The sibling dynamics are mostly the same, with a bit of anger/jealousy/rivalry/angst thrown into the mix. An unexpected romance comes into play as well (that one really took me by surprise). The subtle humor is great (you're grinning while reading kind of humor), I much prefer to laugh than to cry when I read. So far, the series is great, definitely not predictable, & well worth reading.
    Stacey Rourke DOES IT AGAIN!
I ordered this book some time ago and failed to read it right away. I have to say I love this series! Stacey Rourke has never let me down as an author! I have read 4 separate books she's written and enjoyed each and every one! I highly recommend her writing! She is talented, and imaginative! Want a couple of great reads? You really have to start with book one!
    MUST READ SERIES!!
I received this book in exchange for a honest review ~WaAr~
First, this is one of the best series that I have read in a while! The second book is even better than the first one! I'm just in love with the series and am excited and anticipatingly waiting the next book Sacrifice. The characters and their dialogue play off one another perfectly. I can't say enough about how I love this book or this series!
The story flows great from the first book to the second. This is the continuation of Celeste's story of being the conduit of the Gryphon and how she is learning to cope with life and being a heroine. We meet new yummy characters: Caleb and Rowan. We also meet a rag tag bunch of dark army dweebs known as the Dark Army Glee Club, loved them! Will Celeste embrace her calling and her life? Will she meet a yummy man too good for her to be real? Does everyone have secrets and extracurricular motives behind what they do? Who is in charge of the Dark Army since Barnabus is gone? I give it a 5 star since that's all they will allow :) I would give more if they let me! NEED TO READ BOOK!
    Uh-oh
This was intense and not only because of the actions, but because Celeste had to do a lot of "figuring" and it was tough watching her struggle to figure out what was right for her. The characters were developed further and the plot was intense.

    Brilliant!!
This has been a wonderful series, made even better by extraordinary narration. Highly recommend this series!
    Amazing conclusion!
Just when I thought the series couldn't get any better it did. This book had so many twists and turns that it was an emotional roller coaster. Loved the book and it was the perfect end to the main Lunar Chronicles series. I couldn't have asked for more. The narration was fantastic as well.
    Amazing
It was funny watching the hours decrease. 7 hours left... 5 hours left... how the hell is there 5 hours left? Two hours left... still two hours??? 10 minutes left (the interview at the end)... SATISFACTION... a great end to the story, plenty of time to slow down, drink enough to not be left hollow. So glad I started reading/listening this series.

    Read by Peter Kenny.
    Critic Reviews:
"A superb blend of intrigue, mystery and magic and urban fantasy; it's brilliantly written; and the story is gripping." (Civilian Reader)
    Members Reviews:
Deep and dark and full of grace...
I'm loving this series! The characters are complex and diverse; the plot elements are incredibly original, and the settings...oh my goodness, the settings! A magical war has left Paris a city of crumbling ruins and polluted the river Seine which houses a decaying kingdom of dragons. Both are so well imagined that you can practically smell the mildew, and yet both are also full of beauty. There's intrigue, class and cultural tensions, love in many different forms...oh...and did I mention dragons!? This was a wonderful read. Highly recommended.
There's a lot to love in this book
The House of Binding Thorns picks up shortly after the events of The House of Shattered Wings, when Madeleine is returned to House Hawthorne and, unfortunately, under Asmodeus's thumb/dagger. There's a lot to love in this book: a deeper, longer look at the Dragon Kingdom under the Seine, and their growing interactions with the houses; Asmodeus marrying into the Dragon Kingdom; the Annamite community that makes the best they can of the magic-ravaged city, away from the Fallen; a glimpse back to House Silverspires; the introduction of a Fallen who has stayed out of the war and conflict between the houses, making a life with the one she loves on her own terms.
Overall: gorgeous writing, lovely characters, and an amazing world I'll come back to again and again.
Great second book of (hopefully) a long series.
This is the sequel of House of Shattered Wings. May be read stand alone but you would miss some references.
It is a pleasure to follow the new life of some of the previous protagonists (Madeleine and Philippe) while quickly getting fond of the new characters (Francoise, Thuan). The universe get more and more complex with a very dynamic world building. Protagonists are not visiting a world but changing it.

After 14 years as a stay-at-home mom, Kate Connor has finally rejoined the workforce. But unlike most working moms, Kate can't rearrange her home obligations to fit the needs of her job. Well, not easily, anyway. And not without a few little white lies.
Because the truth is, no one in her family has any clue that she's returned to the job of her youth. Which means no late nights working beside her husband at the kitchen table while the kids watch television. Although, when you think about it, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Because when your job is fighting demons, taking your work home with you is a really, really bad idea.
    Members Reviews:
    A great new series!
The term "soccer mom" is WAY overused and almost made me not try this book. That would have been a bad mistake.
Kate does not get anywhere near a soccer field, but she gets near plenty of demons and that's what makes this fun. She is dragged back into her old life of demon hunter to protect her family and town and she's mighty good at it. The juggle of her two lives and the cast of characters around her are interesting and well done.
I am about to finish the earlier book and plan to read the next ones as soon as I can. The book is also blissfully lacking stupid spelling and grammar errors, which is one of my big turnoffs.
A great read, and great series. I am so happy to have found it!
good read to fall away from the real world with
I love the story line. I got hooked on book 1 and am still reading the series. The characters are very engaging. The story is one that is easy to fall into and away from the real world as I read. There are very minimal errors (which I have come to find very common on Kindle books): grammatical and spelling, fewer than I have found in other Kindle books. All in all a very good read. You must like the paranormal and be able to enjoy the realm of the impossible. This book/series has a lot religious references and of course, Demons.
    California Demon
This book is not great literature but it is 100% fun. Julie Kenner was a wonderfully wild imagination and I am so happy she chooses to share it with the world. I enjoyed the second in the Demon Hunter series just as much as the first.
Kate Connor, the Demon Hunter Mom, is just your average ordinary mom as far as carpool moms go. She has managed to keep the demon hunting thing secret from all but a select few who are also involved in keeping the minons of hell in their place.
The demons are getting stronger and this time they try to involve Kate's 14 year old daughter in their ugly plans. That brings a whole new complication to Kate's work. This may involve sharing her work with Allie her daughter.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fun easy read. There is no gratuitous swearing or blatant sex in this book. That is one reason I gave this book five stars.
    Better than great!
Book 2 of the best I have read in a REALLY long time! It's fun to be so excited about a story that I can't bear to put it down. I love being emotionally invested in the character's lives- to me, the hallmark of a great author. Am I excited about this series? *lol* Absolutely!! The characters are down-to-earth with real-life problems we can all identify with...except for the demons.

Re-interpretations and Originals. All Fairy Tales.
I almost feel guilty giving the narrator only four stars. I did so because she flattens her voice when she speaks narration, but that's probably to increase the contrast with the many character voices she portrays brilliantly. The title story does not suffer from this at all, as the narration is provided by the most charming rat you'll ever meet.
And there is always something special when an author has the opportunity to narrate their own work. You know for a fact that she knows her own characters, and knows how they speak.
Whether the story is a re-interpretation of (or more likely a mash-up of several) classic tales you already know, or a completely original dreamscape with "once upon a time" settings but modern metaphors, they are all engaging, thought-provoking, and intelligent.
    Even the scary after-life clowns.

Excellent! Dark Prophecy, faery princess, forbidden love and an Evil Queen
Having read the Withering palace I didn't think I could love it anymore. But Lillian Yves brings it all to a whole new level! I love this entire series but this is one of my favorites. A castle that talks to its princess, a loyal handmaiden that protects the princess from her evil mother the Queen. It is just a wonderful story that pulls you in from the very beginning and doesn't not let go. The ending sets up for the rest of the series, which trust me you will download everyone!
What an enchanting way to enjoy a new book!
I absolutely loved getting whisked away to a whole other realm while listening to this story as I busily typed at work. This story was full of adventure, turmoil, & angst as well as magic & mystery. I have read many of Purdy's books prior to this, but had not yet read The Withering Place. This was also my first audiobook of her work. Absolutely loved it!!! Now I need another to continue this journey while I finish my work day.
    Faeries make terrible parents...
If you could sum up The Withering Palace in three words, what would they be?
    Magical. Dark. Enticing.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Aveta, she's a young woman who's both compassionate and strong at the same time, though her behaviour does become a lot darker by the end and a lot less 'faery princess'.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I really enjoyed the ending of this book when Aveta reclaims her kingdom (I can't give anything away!)
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Absolutely - and I did!
    Any additional comments?
Fantastic narration for this book, I think it really added to the experience, being able to listen to all of the characters' voices being acted out. The evil queen was especially chilling!
