    Title: Shadowland
Subtitle: A Tale from the Dark Ages
    Author: C.M. Gray
    Narrator: Ioan Hefin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-10-16
    Publisher: Author's Republic
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
This is the story that came before, when Britain was just a shadowland.
We grow up with the legend of King Arthur, but where did he come from? Who was Merlin? What part did the Druids play in bringing Arthur to his round table? On the night of Midwinter's Eve, a storyteller takes his listeners back to the Dark Ages and a tale from his youth:
"I have lived more years than I can remember, probably more than the sum of all your years combined. Kings have called me friend and brigands have sworn to burn the flesh from my bones, even if they have to search all seven halls of the shadowland to find me."
Deserted by its Roman masters, Britain has been invaded by the Saxons at the invitation of Vortigern, traitorous leader of the Britons. As the tribes unite to reclaim their land, one man must rise to lead them and become their only true king.
Shadowland is a young adult story of historical fantasy set in the Dark Ages of Britain.

    A gripping mystical Story
Would you listen to Shadowland again? Why?
I would. Some time ago I bought the book and it was a favourite story for myself and my teenage daughter who also read it. I am not sure who enjoyed it the most but she is now older and has asked to borrow my I-pod so she can also listen in her car. The descriptive writing is brought to life by the rich voice of Ioan Hefin and it whisks you away to a distant time and land
Who was your favorite character and why?
I loved the different characters and eventual mystical skills of the boys Cal and Usher. My daughter loved the boys ability to defeat adults due to their fighting ability and magical powers
Which character as performed by Ioan Hefin was your favourite?
Usher is the key character for me and is brought to life as boy and man by Ioan in exactly the tone of voice I had imagined whilst reading the book. Ioan has a voice that feels like the ancient times the book is set in and the descriptive writing of Chris Gray paints pictures you can visualise as he tells the story
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It helped me through four days of commutes around the M25 motorway and on a couple of occasions found myself annoyed when the traffic jam cleared and I wouldn't get to the end of a particular part.
    Any additional comments?
A book for all fans of fantasy mystical tales where good eventually overcomes evil. Good from 15 to 50 year olds! I love this book
    Shadowland: an unusual novel.
Interesting idea. The story rambles a bit, and it's half way through before the King Arthur theme starts to make sense. It also takes a while for the clever idea of the story set in the sixth century being told to an audience in the seventeenth century. The initial assumption is that the audience for the story teller lives within the life span of the teller, and then he fills his pipe with tobacco, not discovered for half a millennia after King Arthur's time. Intriguing. The sound effects used in the recording are a bit crude and become annoying after a while. They are there to let the listener know when the story teller is speaking (because in a confusing way he uses third party) and when the story is being narrated (also third party) I think. The actual recording is poor.

    Incredible voice talent, compelling story!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely! Everything about this book is wonderful. Anyone who likes C.S. Lewis or Tolkien will be captivated by the beauty of this story and the quality of its telling.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Engelmann! I don't want to give too much away, but that guy is my hero. Also the way that Topping narrates him is just wonderful. This is a story of hope, and Engelmann teaches it well: But my boy, that is precisely why the hoping is both so costly and so painfully beautiful. For hope requires a surrender of your dependence on lesser things, and a trust in the greatest."
Have you listened to any of Mark Toppings other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, this is my first, but he is amazing!!!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There are many moments in this story that move me. Iolanthe's encouragement to Cal in the grove is probably the scene that resonated with me most of all. "It is not of consequence to me how fierce or how feeble your resolve has been. For you sought, and you have found, and the result is freedom."
    fantastic
absolutely amazing story, Triplett has done a fantastic job of weaving this story of hope in the face of evil and shedding light on all of the challenges and struggles that accompany such an epic adventure, and with the captivating voice of Mark topping you feel as if you were in the land aiénor sharing in the adventure. all in all an instant favorite and highly recommended 10/10
Wonderful reflection of good and light
Wonderfully woven tale of great adventure and reflection of the truth and the light, and darkness and evil. Truthful reminder of the battles between the two and the difference made through choices to dwell on either hope, or fear. Skillful and perceptive narration of a great story.

    Good, but not great
A lovely, but not-quite-satisfying story. The language can take a little while to catch on to, but creates a unique and endearing voice for the main character.
While the characters are all intriguing, and mostly very easy to lobe, the story never quite seems to find its footing. It stands at a somewhat muddled intersection of adventure and romance with a Lovecraftian/steampunk backdrop, never entirely sure what it wants to be. By the time you reach the climax, it feels like a main story arc is just beginning.
Still, a solid 3.5 so long as you love a queer, character-focused story. My greatest complaint is how little the ending does to satisfy. If you've connected with the characters, you'll find yourself immediately wanting more, and not necessarily in a good way.
As far as narration goes, Boulton knocks it out of the park, as always. He's become a huge selling point on audio books for me with good reason.
    This was made for audio.
If a book could be said to be written for audio this would be that book. Alexis Hall is a master of language, and often incorporates dialects into his books, but his use of Cant in this book, and series, takes it to a different level.
Read this book because it, like all of his books, is beautiful, and so well-written that I am amazed at his talent and skill.
Listen to this book because the true magic of his words can be fully appreciated when heard spoken by the outstanding narrator.
Completely, and without any reservation, recommended.
A fun and dramatic steampunk story
This steampunk adventure features a diverse cast of characters and has excellent narration. Highly recommended!
    Fantastic pairing
Prosperity was wonderful reading, but being able to hear Dil underscored how crucial voices were to characterization in the story
    Boulton's voice is magic
    Wonderful steampunk
It took me only a short moment to get into the language but once I did it was magical. The story is crafted beautifully and draws you in. I don't think it would work if usual language and phrases were used. Reading Alexis Hall are great but listing to them brings a whole new level.
Nicholas Boulton does a brilliant job with the narration. He brings the characters to life and draws out their personality and unique accents
I would totally recommend this listening to this book.

Not as good as the other books
I didn't care for this book as much as the others in the series. Even though the narrator did an awesome job, the story itself just didn't seem as interesting as the others. The author did an amazing job with the world building, characters, descriptions, etc. I just finished listening to the book and all I can really remember about it was it seemed like they were constantly in a battle and Neyla was being married off to different men. This book just didn't grab me and pull me in like the others did.

Great for Fantasy fans. Tamer Game of Thrones
Like Song of Ice and Fire but focusing on Magic. Still plenty of blood, little bit of sex (mostly implied), but a lot of Magic. 2 or 3 stories all wrapped up in one City. Can't wait for the next one.
A Great Fantasy read from the Author of Battlemage
What did you like most about Bloodmage?
The character development is first class with a nod to characters from the previous book. It was hard to stop listening.
What about Matt Addiss performance did you like?
Matt Addis is the reason I chose to buy this book in Audible format rather then paperback. His voice carries you away to this world and differentiation of character voices make it easy to recognise what each character sounds like. Well done.
    Any additional comments?
Stephen Aryan's work reminds me so much of David Eddings books of the Belgariad. I am so eager for the next book now that I may just have to start over again.
Good story but not great part of trilogy
The story as a standalone is good but as part of a wider series I find this to be lacking without enough link to battlemage.
I would however recommend still going for it as chaos Mage the 3rd book is exceptional and in my opinion the true sequel to battlemage.
    From war to intrigue
The previous book was about the war but this was just the start. This book focuses on some of the aftermath and the continuing fight again evil magic. Crime families, guardians, royalty and magic are a great combination.
    another great book
the second book in the series is as good as the first a gripping story which I couldn't stop listening to.

Never thought I would be reading a romance novel.
Never thought I would enjoy reading a romance novel. I hate them. I gave this series a chance only because I was curious about who existed, what is a creatus? Once I read the first of the series, I was hooked. Could not stop reading. Normally, I would stop in between the series and read another book before starting the next book of a series. With this book, I could not stop. I had to find out what's coming next. It was well written, and I did enjoy the characters. I even enjoyed the antagonist of the book. For me, what made it a good read is the combination of the super heroism, supernatural, mystery and suspense ( oh yeah, the romance). All in one series. If you do decide to read it, just buy the set. You will not be disappointed.
    Addicted
I love these books they are even better than the movies about superheroes. Carmen knows how to write about a character so you feel as tho you know them and truly care for them.get these books you wont be disappointed
    Great paranormal adventure
    Very rivioting and interesting story.
    Great read
I love it it's a great read. I love the story line love action and the twists. All the characters are great.
    The Twists & Turns Continue
For me, this third book was as good as the first one with the second one bring the best. The plot if this one was a little more twisted. DeSousa continued with the excellent character development and her penchant for weaving new characters into the story. She is an excellent storyteller. I'm looking forward to Book 4.

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
A gripping tale of war, adventure, horror, and romance, Shardik is a remarkable exploration of mankind's universal desire for divine incarnation.
Richard Adams' Watership Down was a number-one New York Times best seller, a stunning work of the imagination, and an acknowledged modern classic. In Shardik, Adams sets a different yet equally compelling tale in a far-off fantasy world. Shardik is a fantasy of tragic character, centered on the long-awaited reincarnation of the gigantic bear Shardik and his appearance among the half-barbaric Ortelgan people. Mighty, ferocious, and unpredictable, Shardik changes the life of every person in the story. His advent commences a momentous chain of events.
Kelderek the hunter, who loves and trusts the great bear, is swept up by destiny to become first devotee and then prophet, then victorious soldier, then ruler of an empire and priest-king of Lord Shardik - Messenger of God - only to discover ever-deeper layers of meaning implicit in his passionate belief in the bear's divinity.
    Members Reviews:
Children Are the Flames of God
Richard Adams' epic fantasy Shardik (1974) differs from his first novel, the wonderful rabbit epic Watership Down (1972), and from his third, the devastating satire The Plague Dogs (1977). First, the point of view characters of Shardik are human beings instead of animals. Second, it takes place in a pre-medieval fantasy world, not our contemporary real world. Third, it is bleaker, with less easily appealing characters. Fourth, rather than depicting a (rabbit or dog) quest to find a home, the later novel, as Adams says in the 2014 Introduction to the audiobook, is about 'power, politics, corruption, and the nature of religious truth.'
Shardik begins with an apocalyptic fire burning a giant bear into the backwater province of Ortelga. There the loner hunter Kelderek stumbles upon the bear and believes it is the divine Lord Shardik returned as prophesied in ursine form. When Kelderek tells his news to the powers that be, he sparks a debate: should the Ortelgans follow the Tuginda (high priestess), who says to watch and sing to Shardik to find out what he wants them to do, or should they follow the ambitious Baron Ta-Kominion, who wants to use Shardik to inspire the army into taking back the long-lost Ortelgan empire? The Tuginda believes that to manipulate (especially with drugs and cages) the bear-god for human desire is blasphemy doomed to failure. Kelderek sides with the man of action, opening the door to a world of pain and suffering for the people of the empire, the bear, and himself.
Although Kelderek is the agent of much harm, he is deeply affecting because of his capacity for faith, error, regret, and love. Adams puts his characters through the psychological and physical wringer. As the Tuginda says to Kelderek, he and she are vessels of god to be broken and remade. For true believers like Kelderek, Shardik is a God ever about to reveal a deep truth, but to people from different cultures he is a bear worshiped by fanatical barbarians. Adams writes no unambiguously supernatural events or artifacts or characters. The epigraph to the novel is a quotation by Jung: 'Superstition and accident manifest the will of God.' And yet. At key times and places Shardik does seemingly nudge people in certain directions.

    Disappointing ending
I find it irritating how even books with supposed strong female proagonists constantly refer to the physical effects of their emotions: falling to the floor, blood rushing, head spinning etc. Come on, Elizabeth is made of sterner stuff than that! Also the ending was a total cop out. Not as good as the other 2.
Gemma Whelan's performance is great though.
    I love these books!
Third installment in the story of Elizabeth Barnabus & the Bullet Catchers Handbook . Gripping, exciting listening with a plethora of fascinating characters, you will love or loathe them all. Gemma Whelans delivers the story with aplomb. I can't wait for the next book from Rod Duncan.
A nice ending to the triology
Gemma Whelan is a amazing narrator, the story is slow to begin with, however, picks up the pace after awhile and before you know it its the end.
Brilliant culmination of an enticing trilogy
A very engaging listen, with a tinny nod to Jane Austin in the very last line
A very different story in a very different England
An intriguing story set in an England in 2009 that did not progress beyond the technology of the early 19th century. It has all the right ingredients: a good tale (well narrated), rich characters and a satisfying ending.

A great follow up to book one
Even more action, a curse, mummies, vampires, a siren, more incubi... And of course, burial chambers, artefacts & the vampire-attacking cat! Also, an awesome narrator. This one has it all. Supernatural meets Indiana Jones!
    Wonderful
This is such a terrific series. Great timing between each of the cataclysmic situations Owl finds herself in. The only thing I was uncomfortable with was the cat Captain's fate left hanging. I hope there is not too much time between this and the next novel's release.
    Captain to the rescue!
Loved this continuation of the series. Great reader really brings Owl to life. Can't wait for the next one!
    Not finished, but disappointed
OK--I loved the first book in this series which I eye-read, but I've been pulled right out of this story with the narration--Caracalla (who died in Turkey, by the way, instead of Egypt), I could forgive, but "calliope?"
Great new fantasy. Kim Harrison/Faith Hunter fans
Listened to he books back to back. This is basically a new favourite fantasy series and at the moment, finding one that appeals to a female audience, is available from audible U.K., has an amazing plot and keeps your interest all the way through, is harder and harder to find. The series is billed as a female Indiana Jones working in a world where the old supernatural legends are true. The mythical creatures and archaeological sites seem to have had far more thought put into them than the old film scipts and therefore feel more authentic than the movies I watched as a kid. Stylistically the writing feels like Kim Harrison meets Faith Hunter. The heroine is both flawed enough and likable enough to be interesting and leave room for progression. I struggled with the first few hours in book one, as Owl is a bit childish and superficial for a 27 year old woman but that's o.k. as it works for the series plot and I think may become even more integral to the plot as it progresses.

Follow the continuing adventures of the Fossick boys and knitting witches as they journey north to the windswept Out Crops to ally with Hed Clansmen and lift the curse of the Glacier Born in an attempt to reawaken the Magic of Men.

    Very Fun Read
I enjoyed reading this book a lot since I am an addicted avid knitter. The story is very creative and original.
    Five Stars
    Book 2 is great!
    Fatal lack of focus
This is the second book in the Potluck Yarn series, and what I have to say about it is similar to what I had to say about the first book. There will be a third and concluding book in the series, but I won't be reading that one.
Is this book good? In many ways, it is. The rich world-building and complex plot from the first volume are continued and further developed. The prose is excellent, and, if you're a knitter (I'm not) there are tie-in projects that will undoubtedly be of interest.
So, what's my problem? Like the first book, this book lacks focus, and the problems that this causes are severely compounded. There are too many "lead" protagonists--- so many that as a reader you can't concentrate on any one of them. The story features one over-arching plot but numerous "main" plot lines. This is, simply put, a classic writing error. A main plot and a certain number of subplots are workable. Numerous main plots are not workable.
In the end, what should have been a really good book, and series, became, by degrees, more and more annoying until in the end the annoyance was fatal. It's a shame.
Three stars for a rich world and good prose is as high as I can go.
This review is based on a review copy from the book's distributor.
    SECRETS OF THE LOST CAVES
SECRETS OF THE LOST CAVES (Potluck Yarn Trilogy book #2)
This book takes off from the first book, The Broken Circle.
If you are a teenager or adult, and love Fantasy, you are going to love all these books written by Cheryl Potter.
This is a huge paper back book, 453 Pages.
After reading the first book, I could not wait to read the second one all curled up in my chair with a glass of Ice Tea and my Reading Glasses.
Cheryl Potter is a very well written Author as you will find out if you haven't already.
I personally love that there is a page of Cast of Characters, and Love, Love, Love, that there are about 4 pages of pictures of these characters. Who does that....
