    Title: Grim
Subtitle: Dark Fairy Tales for the Psychologically Minded
    Author: Joseph Burgo
    Narrator: Stuart Packer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-26-16
    Publisher: New Rise Press
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of Vacillian and The Lights of Barbrin, these three novella-length tales explore psychological themes latent in the classic Grimm versions. Rather than presenting two-dimensional "good" heroines pitted against "evil" step-mothers, Grim portrays fully realized characters grappling with shame and self-doubt, suffering at the hands of mothers best thought of as narcissistic in modern terminology. Due to their dark themes and some graphic sexual material, these tales are not for the faint of heart and are unsuitable for children.

I'm very much into fairy tale retellings
This audiobook is a retelling of 3 of the most well-known fairy tales of all time - Cinderella, Snow White and Rapunzel.
The twist in these versions, however, is that the author applies more human psychology to the situation which makes the stories far more believable. He also focused on parts of the stories which were glossed over in the originals, such as why the villains behaved the way they did.
In Cinderella, the story doesn't stop at the moment she's matched up to her glass slipper - Joseph Burgo imagines the quality of life a marriage would bring if it was based on nothing more than a night of dancing and some snazzy footwear. What kind of man would search the kingdom for a woman based on that one night alone? Listen to this story to find out!
Snow White was another excellent retelling, the story begins with the childhood of the evil queen (her mother) and all the events that led up to Snow White being poisoned. The dwarves are real people in this story, not just quaint little miners with no minds of their own, something which I haven't really read in any other version.
Rapunzel was my favourite of all these stories, possibly because it's not a story I was hugely familiar with beyond watching Disney's Tangled, when it came out. This story was particularly dark and covered themes like addiction, self-loathing and general ass hattery.
Stuart Packer didn't rock my world as a narrator, though the production quality was excellent and his accent spot on for these stories - as I was already familiar with the fundamentals of these stories it was quite easy to let my mind wander, I think it would have taken a bit more charisma to keep my head well and truly in the game.
I'm very much into fairy tale retellings and this one was pretty damn good, the only part of the psychological aspects I found a little bit odd was the sexual behaviour being shoehorned into the story - I'm not prudish when it comes to sexual content in books (immature, yes. Prudish, no.) but this seemed a little bit forced into the story to make sure it was in there alongside all the other additions.
If you're interested in fairytales with a twist, give this book a go! Be warned, though, this isn't 'dark' in the sense of 'horror' but more in the sense of 'Cinderella likes to self-harm, so trigger warnings ahoy!

    Why Cheryl WHY??
Would you try another book from Cheryl Matthynssens and/or Zachary Michael?
That's a giant MAYBE, but with some conditions: ONLY if Cheryl stops hiring these ridiculously bad narrators! Her books are being RUINED by bad narration! Cheryl, darling, dearest -- did you not read my last review of book three?? THAT Narrator (Jimmie Moreland) was terrible, and instead of listening to my pleadings, you hired Zachary, who clearly went to the same school as Jimmie Moreland! Apparently at this school, they BEAT you when you correctly place emphasis within a sentence, or when you properly pronounce words. Zachary is so bad, I haven't even finished the book yet and I'm writing this. Cheryl, you're a GOOD writer! But its literally impossible to see that through the mangled narration...Wait . . . maybe you don't have a say in who narrates your books?! Perhaps you really pissed off the guy who picks the narrator . . . If that's true . . . I forgive you... Otherwise...
If youve listened to books by Cheryl Matthynssens before, how does this one compare?
Honestly, i'm so distracted by the bad narration that I'm not able to give an honest answer about that...
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Oh lord . . .I blew my wad on step three. Just for fun let's talk about how excruciatingly bad Zacharay's attempts at doing a female voice are. Horrible is my kindest offering. Let's take it one step further and discuss his attempts at doing a SEXY female voice.... It's this bad: I'm now GAY.
Was Pseudo-Dragon worth the listening time?
Aaaaaghhhhhh!!!! I so want to say yes to show a kindness to Cheryl . .. .but .....god! I think I would rather have drunk a cup of dirt. It would have been less painful, and more satisfying than listening to what might have been some good writing destroyed by droning word butchers.
    Any additional comments?
I have so many, but I'll just pick one. I've decided to become a Narrator, because CLEARLY ...

    Great book.
Excellent narration! Amazing and powerful voice. Completely drawn into each character and their story. Love this series
    Alex Bledsoe continues to impress.
Great addition to the Tufa series, especially for a musical theater geek. Stefan Rudnicki is masterful, as usual.
Thank you Alex Bledsoe - Another Gift of Tufa
Yes, this is a Series with four editions so far. No, you do not have to read the previous to enjoy the one you are reading. The mysterious appalachian music, heritage and custom draws you in with every word.

The Hum and the Shiver: Book 1
Wisp of a Thing: Book 2
    Long Black Curl: Book 3
    Chapel of Ease: Book 4
There are also four short stories.
The audible narrator's dark chocolate voice brings it all to life. Stefan Rudniki could read anything and add character and color.
    Another excellent Bledsoe listen
When I get a Bledsoe story on audible, I always know it's good. I wish the narrator's voice wasn't so deep, but he did a great job with this book in particular.
    Excellent

    Publisher's Summary:
Barreling along 100 feet beneath the surface, the giant predator gained swiftly on its prey. Fifty yards ahead, a school of chrome-colored fish fled terror-stricken before it. Measuring close to 20 feet in length, the enormous descendants of the prehistoric fish Xiphactinus audax were, themselves, top predators, each tipping the scales at over 3,000 pounds. Compared to the whale-sized nightmare that pursued them, however, the toothy, tarpon-like creatures were little more than a snack.
Nestled off the coast of Cuba and shielded by impenetrable reefs of razor-sharp rock, stands Diablo Caldera. To the rest of the world, the extinct, bowl-shaped volcano is hardly worth exploring. But the caldera has a secret. Its isolated saltwater lake has remained untouched since the fall of the dinosaurs.
Inside this hellish aquarium are the deadliest marine predators the world has ever seen. Imprisoned behind towering walls of volcanic rock since the Cretaceous, and warded by a mysterious race, Diablo's savage inmates rule with flipper and fang the only world they have ever known.
But something is about to change. The prison that is Diablo is beginning to fail, and soon it will unleash into the unsuspecting Atlantic a primeval fury the likes of which it has never before known.
It is 100 tons of death. And it likes to eat.

    Fun stuff!
Hearing a Kronos Rising title, even a novella, is a great way to experience this story beyond simply reading. If you like Max Hawthorne's marine reptile fare, you should definitely check this audible out!
id rather listen to fish swim
A pointless short story. Was this meant to be an intro to an actual book? Whatever it sounds like every other geneeic monster of the sea drivel. Not worth the money. Narrator made this bearable-i recognize him from Lovecraft stories, WHICH THIS FAILED TO SIMULATE
    loved it
loved the story as much as reading it. it helps to compliment what has happened from the other 2 books so far. giving back story and more intrigue of what is to come.
    Intriguing!
A solid story that surrounds an isolated volcanic island inhabited by natives and clearly expresses their struggles as they are caught in a war between the prehistoric creatures they call 'Gods' and the forces of nature. Throwbacks to Merian C. Cooper's 'King Kong' are at work in this short, but sadly supplies nothing unique in the early stages of the plot line. Throughout it, Max Hawthorne displays his passionate knowledge of paleontology and acute geographical detail; all of which allured me to listen more. People unfamiliar with such topics may struggle to comprehend the information, but can find entertainment value in the beautifully described settings and gripping moments of dread that Max Hawthorne excels in portraying.
The lack of character dialogue at times made it difficult to gauge their personality and/or bond to. However, this is overshadowed by the authors detailed depiction of ongoing events. In regards to Narration, Rich Miller does a great job of reading clearly and concisely, but failed at moments to really capture the emotion of the storyline.
In conclusion, Max Hawthorne's 'Kronos Rising: Diablo' is, again, a solid audiobook that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to, but felt elements were missing to make it 'unique' and ended too quickly.

    Publisher's Summary:
Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment and Warner Bros are set to bring YA sci-fi novel Illuminae to the big screen.
The year is 2575, and two megacorporations are at war over a planet that's little more than an ice-covered speck. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it.
With enemy fire raining down on them, Ezra and Kady have to make their escape on the evacuating fleet. But their troubles are just beginning.
A deadly plague has broken out on one of the spaceships and is mutating, with terrifying results. Their ship's protection is seriously flawed.
No one will say what is going on. As Kady hacks in to a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her: Ezra. And the only problem with that is they split up before all this trouble started, and she isn't supposed to be talking to him.
A fantastically original, heart-stopping adventure where everything is definitely more dangerous than it seems.

    A. MUST. READ. (or listen lol)
I JUST LOVED IT. THIS SHOULD BE ON YOUR BUCKET LIST. LISTEN TO IT OR LOSE IT.
    Illuminatingly Awesome!
This book told in the form of messages, reports, observation and summaries is fantastic way of telling a new, imaginitive and very clever SciFi story of corruption, conspiracy, big corporate politics and the effects it has on the everyday joe. This tale evokes so different many feelings including laugh out loud witty moments and tragically sad senarios and although it has romance, its not gushy, its more real and honest , great characters add the extra depth a story like this needs. This is a winner!!! I feel this book will be a hit with young adults and not so young adults alike.....................I can not wait for the next installment.
    Pretty good, but....
Great story, and well narrated, except for the poor enunciation of one of the line-up.
However, even the most innocuous profanity was 'bleeped out' by suppressing the volume of such words. The irony was that it was totally ineffective in making the words and just proved to be extremely irritating.
Either remove the words from the script, or man-up and read the ******* words precisely how the author ******* intended.
    great performances. strong story
loved this. performers were great. story engaging and layered. looking forward to the movie now.
    Amazing story
This series is one of my favourites and I had heard very good things about this audiobook as it is full cast. I agree that this audiobook is fab, but I did have a couple of niggles with it. Personally I don't think Kady was quite right, as she didn't seem to have the same level of personality as the other characters, particularly when playing against Ezra who was voiced perfectly! Also, the sound effects were great and could have been used even more, and when listening to the video transcription the voices could have been done by the actors of the characters in the video, as if it's snippets of the video and audio footage, rather than have the analyst read all of it. Still a great audiobook though!

    Members Reviews:
did not breck the integrity of the original
The gods of old are infamous for playing with humans, giving out tokens of favor or destroying bloodlines over some trivial slight. Taking one of the most famous tragedies by Shakespeare, Kate Danley weaves a new twist in which the mythological gods play an intricate and deadly role. The houses of Montague and Capulet are the key victims being used by both Queen Mab, the bringer of nightly dreams and Faunus, the bringing of day dreams to get what they want. However, Queen Mab discovers true love and becomes transformed trying to prevent Faunus from destroying the houses and her true-love.
Danley stays true to the story being careful to weave in hers without taking away from Shakespeares infamous love tragedy. Danley did not attempt to write in the eloquent Shakespearean style; her writing is different yet just as expressive and fluent in a simpler style.
Shakespeare is known for intrigue and Danley continues with the tradition; her intrigue clearly compliments and fits with the classic tale making her story of Queen Mab richer and more powerful. It is never a good thing when gods interfere; they are seen as petty and selfish. While Queen Mab begins that way, her character grows revealing that even gods may have a depth of kindness hidden somewhere deep within themselves.
As an English major and fan of Shakespearean writings, I was not sure that I would like this book. I had my doubts that anyone could make Romeo and Juliet better. Danley is a gifted and skilled writer. She successfully tied in her story without breaking the integrity of the original story.
The characters were well-developed moving one from disliking Queen Mab to feeling a range of emotions from dislike to pity to sadness to cheering her on. When a character goes through such powerful changes and grows, the listener cannot help but change their opinion.
The narrator, Julian Rhind-Tutt is talented. His narration was flawless. I liked that he spoke clearly and with a cadence that felt comfortable not too fast nor too slow. His vocal expressions were strong especially during pivotal times. I enjoyed hearing his voice; soothing and even. Well done!
There were no issues at all with the production and I have to say while there was definitely an opportunity for it to sound more theatrical with sound effects, I am delighted that the production company chose not to go that route. This was already a rich tale, it needed nothing more than a talented narrator which it has. Anything more would have taken away from the story.

    Good story with interesting characters
This is the third book in the series. It is definitely better to start with book one to understand all that is going on.
The beginning was a bit slow and on the sad side. The story slowly picks up and wraps up with a cliffhanger.
The narrator did a pretty good job bringing the story to life.
I'm looking forward to the continuation of the story on the next book.
**This audiobook was provided free of charge in exchange for my honest unbiased opinion**
Great book but you should read book 1 and 2 first.
    Any additional comments?
I was given this book in return for my unbiased honest opinion. This book is great. I loved the narration and the story but this is one of the books that you need to read the other stories first so read in order. Overall a great fantasy listen!!
A story that draw you in
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. It was a great fantasy story, and it really draws you in. It is the third book of this series, and each book has gotten better.
What other book might you compare Ever Winter to and why?
Shatter me series by tehereah Mafi. While they are different type of fantasy/a I in story line, they have a lot of the same plot points. The both have a young girl who starts out unsure, and grow stronger as the story progresses, both have a bit of betrayal, enemy to friends, love triangle, along with fighting a progressive evil.
What does Nancy Peterson bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He timing is perfect. Often when a character is meant to gasp or sound exasperated with a long sigh, you can't always tell from the narration. Macy Peterson really brings the characters to life. She puts a lot of feeling behind the interactions and you get a better idea of the emotions or moods based on how she plays it. It gives you a better grip on the characters peraonalities too.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. It isn't terribly long, so it was manageable to listing to in a strait shot.
    Any additional comments?
This book started out on a bit of a down trodden and depressing feeling, and while you can feel those undertones throughout the story, as it progresses the characters become bolder in personality and stronger. There is a bit of a love triangle but it isn't very angsty. They're are also some new discoveries and twist in the story that in some cases seemed predictable, but it was still great to watch it play out. It has such a variation of personalities that it makes for entertaining interactions between those personalities.

    Fantastic Fantasy Read
I found myself drawn into Jaimie Engle's fantasy world from the first page. Her characters are well-defined, her narratives are engaging, and the plot is thrilling! She blends just the right amount of action, suspense, and drama to keep you running right alongside Arud, Scalvia and Lykke through the adventures of their lives. Amidst Viking lore and shape-shifting wolves, Engle tells an epic tale of family, bravery, and maturity. Be prepared for your heart to pound with excitement, stop from shock, break with misery, and then start all over again with the hope that all will be right with the world. I really enjoyed this book and I plan to share it with my teenage son. Can't wait for the next installment!
Great book from and up and coming author.
"Dreadlands: Wolf Moon is a tale of vikings, werewolves, magic, love and betrayal. Like many great book series we may have to wait until the sequel is published before we get answers to some of the questions book 1 left it's readers with. Nonetheless it was a fascinating, easy read, and very tightly written. Jaimie Engle weaves a fantastic yarn of two siblings, thrust out into the world and forced to survive against not only the elements, but tenacious werewolves who seek their blood.
But Arud and Lykke aren't the only ones trying to eek out an existence in the werewolf strewn Dreadlands. On their journey they encounter several others, not all of which are as they appear and it's a race against the clock to find out who is friend and foe."-Daniel L Welch, Author of Tears of Blood (The Veronian Archives).
Well-Realized and Exciting Opening Tale of Promising Fantasy Saga
Cautious about investing time in a new fantasy series? Don't be, because Engle's Dreadlands is a page turner that takes that classic story of young adults discovering who they are and sets it amongst a well-realized world of adventure, lore, darkness and light. This book is a fusion of different corners of the fantasy genre that feels like the opening chapter of a much larger saga.
