Short but Excellent Bio of B Movie Icon

The star of four John Wayne/John Ford movies, as well as Revenge of the Creature, Tarantula, Mole People, and numerious B Westerns and scifi movies, actor John Agar (1921-2002) tells his story. Agar traces his childhood, then goes on to his unexpected chance start in acting when a guest at his wedding -- to grown up child star Shirley Temple -- invited him to get a screen test. Agar found he liked acting and his first role was the John Ford classic, Fort Apache, with John Wayne and even his wife, Shirley Temple, who appears as the love interest in what was probably her biggest adult role.

The marriage with Temple didn't last long and Agar declines to comment much on it. He remarried...his second wife appeared in Revenge as the lady screaming on a boat as the Creature dives into the ocean. Aside from marriage, Agar admits to having a problem with alcohol and occasionally falling off the wagon, but he accepts responsibility.

This is a short book, but Agar was suffering from emphysema when dictating it, so I'm sure that was a factor. It is buttressed by two Tom Weaver interviews (which in Weaver's fashion bring in a lot of fan-favorite detail about making the movies and not just the bio the author instead focuses on) and an article about Agar which brings in a few details he didn't cover. An excellent decision, especially since Weaver delves more into the making of the scifi and horror movies, adding substantially to Agar's own comments.

Despite its brevity, an excellent bio by a 1950s B movie icon.

A great 'Hollywood' book

A great 'Hollywood' book, absent of the usual Nastiness and Acrimony. A great read, that should be Payed Forward, when finished.

Went on to become the President of CBS News ... a legendary career. No Holding Back

If you like racing, you will love this. Simply but well written without the annoying literary pretension of some sports books. Grimes (once of Strumpet City!) gives a perfect reading. It is A third Angelas Ashes, a third sporting masterclass and finally a riveting courtroom drama. Ill admit that after Lester Pigott hes my favourite jockey, but even if you were not a big fan, I dare you not to be moved one moment, smiling the next and enthralled by idiocy of the BHA in their various attempts in court to destroy a genius, simply because he was different and a non-conformist. God bless you Kieren and may you have the peaceful retirement you greatly deserve.

finished reading "Unbreakable (Mary Kom)" - by Mary Kom.

Highly recommended. Her achievements dwarf the achievements of best Indian sportsperson you can think of.

This Book is simple and narrates her story very well, the book may not be in same league as Abhinav Bindra's A shot at history... But engaging enough to take you through inspirational journey.

Recommended weekend read for all.

Slightly Disappointing

I was looking forward to reading Swann's account of the regular England v. Australia bloodfest. Particularly as his mentor had been Tuffers - the most entertaining test cricketer of recent years. Unfortunately, Swann can spin better than he can write. There is little wit or originality in his prose: it is too burdened by cliche and devoid of real revelation.

After the magazine received angry letters, Hefner wrote a response to criticism where he said, "If it was wrong to persecute heterosexuals in a homosexual society then the reverse was wrong, too." In 1961, Hefner watched Dick Gregory perform at the Herman Roberts Show Bar in Chicago. Based on that performance, Hefner hired Gregory to work at the Chicago Playboy Club; Gregory attributed the subsequent launch of his career to that night.

In June 1963, Hefner was arrested for promoting obscene literature after an issue of Playboy that featured nude shots of Jayne Mansfield was published. The case went to trial and resulted in a hung jury.

A good football book not too many skeletons revealed but if you like football and seeing an ordinary person make it to the top of his profession in England, Scotland and Europe.

Latterly he talks about his career at Sky

To me came a across as a good guy, very ambitious and overcome a heart bypass to become a well liked soccer pundit.

A good follow Up To Going to Sea in a Sieve proving that Danny Baker is the luckiest man alive. He just seems to be in the right place, at the right time, all the sodding time! That gripe aside he's a born story teller and this is s cracking listen. Recommended!

Inspirational

The thought of a person walking off the sins for others and themselves intrigued me (I only wish she could have taken some of mine with her) but I was a bit concerned it may have become a religious rant. Having just returned from Spain myself I took the risk and was so glad I did. Her view of the world, religion, friendship and love was very much closer to mine than I would have guessed when I first uploaded the book. She writes beautifully and succinctly. She uses just the right amount of words without overdoing the dramatics or the descriptions - poetry! I was cold when she was cold, I sweated with her, was uplifted and bereft with her, I really felt I had walked with her. And by the end of the book my sins felt lighter and maybe I accept them more as a part of being human.

I am almost inspired enough to dig out the walking boots and walk some of that amazing trail myself.

I do wish she had published photos of places and some of the people - would have made the experience much richer for the reader.

The dangerous infection of walking

At first blush a strange, medieval notion dismissed by many as rank superstition, becomes an intriguing human study. With a deft ability to tell a story, this gifted author opens up questions of the deep contemporary need for dealing with issues of brokenness and our hunger for some form of reconciliation.

Piper's love of walking (she travels 1300 kms in six weeks) and all things Spanish presents the reader with a infectious description of the ancient pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella. Caution - it will have you examining the condition of your walking shoes.

Awesome Book

Awesome book, this book has been written from the heart and despite its awkward title it is great. If you have journeyed the Camino De Santiago then you should read this book. It is extremely well researched and gives a balanced view of the trials of the Catholic Church in the dilemma that the church finds itself at the moment. There is a deep truth in this book about a journey into the authorâs heart, it is well written.

Interesting twist

I am an avid fan of travel stories and I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The location was a nice change from France and Italy, and the pilgrimage a nice change from renovating a run down house (though I really like them too)The book was well written and provided a good blend of travel and human insights. Absolutely recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book I loved the way the author organised and paid for her trip it was novel and clever

She had the responsibility of all her patrons to absolve their sins and that was quite a burden for her to carry.
