A Very Good Story

Most human beings learn at a very early age the lesson that weakness invites predation. How many times have we been reminded that "he who desires peace must prepare for war"? As children, we apply this logic to the small concerns of the schoolyard; as adults, this same logic is applied to much more important issues. Whether the truisms that force must be answered with force and that deterring attack means projecting strength are well-founded notions isn't something that most of us spend a lot of time thinking about, but it is the subject of Lester del Rey's classic novella Victory.

Victory takes place during a time in which humanity has the wealthiest. most technologically advanced civilization in a galaxy teeming with intelligent life. Although Earth has the resources to establish a powerful empire and the political clout to lead all the other humanoid races in their constant struggle against the "aliens" (i.e. races that aren't bipedal), the cradle of humanity has instead chosen to focus on trade and providing moral leadership. Of course, this vexes Earth's friends and entices its enemies who see Earth's civilization as bloated and ripe for conquest. Some humans reject the "cowardice" of Earth to participate in the humanoid crusade against the galaxy's aliens. Victory's protagonist, Captain Duke O'Neil, is just such a man.

O'nNeil detests the planet of his birth and chooses to take up the cause of a blue humanoid race locked in a life-and-death struggle with a nasty alien race. The blue people win with O'Neil's help, but with their world in ruins, the victory tastes like ashes. After doing his part to help the nice blue people, O'Neil returns to Earth, intending to sign up for service with another humanoid military. Along the way, he meets another war veteran, a man named Flannery, with a radically different perspective on galactic politics and how best to go about the business of providing security for Earth's people. Flannery fought in a different conflict, but for the same reasons as O'Neil. However, he had the good sense to realize that the blood-for-blood mentality that drove many of the galaxy's wars was a product of emotional, immature minds.

Serial still going strong

I enjoyed this one thoroughly. It strikes the right balance of bringing a new listener up to speed while breaking new ground, and sets the pace for what will hopefully be a long and thoroughly satisfying ride.

The narrator has the right tone of voice to match the writing style, which I completely believe is your average excessively-intelligent snarky teenager. Having been one myself, I can really relate. In the series he starts out stuck in the monotony of school, extracurriculars, and facing a world he's expected to be part of but sees so many faults in he would really rather keep his distance. Then the world turns upside down and he learns the blood in his veins is potentially the most valuable commodity on the planet, and his wants are worth nothing.

Now our ordinary teenager has to figure out how to do the most good with his blood, retain his independence as a human being, and wage war on the pharmaceutical conglomerates hunting him like dogs.

Three installments in and you can tell this one is going places.

Different Worlds

Roxie and Jaguar are the main characters. Jaguar a secretary for police dept. who is transported into another world and is to kill Roxie, agalactic who is now taking hormones to produce milk for the Human Milk Company. They are transported thru portal to different worlds in the Universe. The character of Sabella a vampire is transported into the database. It is a comic sci-fi, quick fun listen. Narration is great. A perfect story about "perfect" Chaos Space Marines.

This Warhammer 40,000 story about an Emperor's Children war band of Chaos Space Marines could be called "when bad things happen to bad people". I found this story of wicked "heroes" dealing with even more wicked people and sinister circumstances quite entertaining. It is filled with the kind of pulp action that one would expect from a Warhammer 40K story and a good portion of it is taken up with intricately described battle scenes and appropriate sound effects. However, there's a little more to it than that as a murder mystery evolves during a battle that also involves a Chaos Marine war band that follows the god Khorne. Who is killing the "perfect" Chaos Marines devoted to the Chaos god Slaanesh in such a perfect manner? I don't want to put any spoilers in here, so I'll just say that I thought this was a fun story with a few entertaining twists and turns. There's not exactly a ton of character development or intricate story here, it's mostly action, but I found the characterizations and minor mystery it does contain fun and interesting. The voice acting and music are well done and enhance the story telling. Recommended for all Warhammer 40K fans, especially if you enjoy stories focusing on perfectly sinister Chaos characters.

Perfect in the way that Adam, Frankenstein's monster was perfect

The one Chaos Space Marine that had previously been left for dead and badly damaged ends up being a ghoulish re-animator, but wait that is not the realm of Slaanesh!

Oh never mind! The entire story makes no sense. Why get held up with Black Library precedents!

WOW! AMAZING!

I've listened to plenty of 40k audio dramas and this has to be my new favorite. It has vivid and engaging writing and the amazing sound effects complete the experience.

The characters are very unique and are some of my (new) favorites. If you're a fan of either intense action or the chaos forces, GET THIS! I'm not even really a fan of the Emperors Children but seriously, I will buy whatever Nick Kyme puts out next. Now I'm off to see what else he's written (I listened to this 2 months ago and still love it)

Perfect short story for WH40K

The publishing at the Black Library is consistently high, in the quality department, but the audio CDs have had a wider "variety in taste" than the printed works. Some have worked, some have not.

This one is excellent!

It captures the feeling of impending doom and hard choices and presents two very well developed characters with a supporting cast of interesting ones.

There are twists and turns throughout the story, and the voice acting is superb.

If you only buy one this year, this should be your choice!

the madness within

excellent audio book. just what i would expect from black library. You almost get the feeling that your there during the drama. it is done very well and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the 40k universe.

A highly atmospheric audio drama

"You want a proper horror story set in 40k? Look no further than this gut-wrenching audio drama from Steve Lyons who definitely has a strong grip on how to combine the two together." ~ The Founding Fields

Garro: Oath of Moment, Garro: Legion of One, Raven's Flight, Fireborn and now number 5, The Madness Within. If I had to pick my top two from these five audio dramas, it would be Raven's Flight followed by The Madness Within. Why? Because it is just that good. Plain and simple.

This is my first experience with Steve's work and simply put, he is awesome. The Madness Within is an audio drama that takes the grimdark of the 40k setting and meshes it perfectly with a horror story, giving us a product that is much bigger than the sum of its parts. It has Space Marines, Daemons, dramatic tension, infighting, fear, anxiety and that crucial horror element.

Horror and 40k are something that few authors within Black Library have gone for. From what I have read, which isn't much compared to a lot of the other people who have been with the setting for far longer, only Sarah Cawkwell has gone that route and delivered admirably. I am currently reading through her Space Marine Battles novella Accursed Eternity and it a story that will definitely spook you and give you after-images of zombies and ghosts as you read it.

I have been reliably told that this is something Steve Lyons excels at with some of his previous novels for Black Library, such as Dead Man Walking. I hope to give that one a read soon and see for myself.

Well, back to this audio drama. From the start the plot hooks you right in because Steve starts off with an intense yet short action scene, introduces his characters and then launches right away into his larger narrative. To compile the plot in simple terms, it is the story of a squad of Crimson Fists who arrived on one of their chapter's recruiting worlds some three years ago to find new recruits to replenish the chapter's severely depleted ranks since the battle for their own homeworld saw the Crimson Fists nearly destroyed by a freak accident.

But its no easy task for Sergeant Estabaan's squad because they have already suffered serious setbacks. A daemon has somehow manifested in the squad's sanctuary-keep and has already killed more than half the squad.
