    A classic
A gripping story about the twilight of the Terran Federation. One of Piper's best. It could be adapted into a good movie or miniseries.
    Three Stars
    Quick read, decent
    The Wisdom of Merlin
Cosmic Computer (1963) (AKA: Junkyard Planet) is the third SF novel in the Federation series, followingFour-Day Planet. The initial work in this series isUller Uprising.
This story is set on Poictesme after the System States War. Poictesme is a former agricultural world in the Gartner Trisystem that was used as headquarters for the Terran Federation fleet during the war against the Alliance. Then the war ended and the market for its agricultural products mostly disappeared.
The only remaining cash crops were wine-melons and army-navy surplus materiel. Since Poictesme had no means of shipping these products, the producers got little for the goods. The economy was depressed and many people were out of work.
Over the years, rumors abounded about Merlin, saying that the computer was located within the Gartner System. According to the grapevine, Merlin had won the war for the Terran Federation and could easily provide plans for relieving the currently depressed economy. But Merlin had not been located among all the military gear found on the planet or elsewhere.
In this novel, Conn Maxwell is a native of Poictesme. He was sent to Terra to gain a technical education and to discover the location of Merlin.
Rodney Maxwell is the father of Conn and Flora.
Flora is Conn's sister. She is now an assistant principal at the Litchfield school and is engaged to Wade.
Wade Lucas is the Litchfield town doctor. He was educated on Baldur and moves to Poictesme soon after graduation.
Kurt Fawzi is the Mayor of Litchfield.
Klem Zareff had been a Colonel in the Alliance Army. He was originally from Ashmodai in the System States.
Tom Brangwyn is the Litchfield town marshal. He was probably from Hathor.
In this story, forty years after the war, Conn Maxwell returns from school on Terra. He has searched through every available database and has even interviewed Foxx Travis, former commander of the fleet on Poictesme. He has found nothing that indicates that Merlin had ever existed.
Upon returning home, Conn finds himself unable to tell everyone that their hopes are unfounded. He states that he has not yet found the computer site, but that he had brought back much information to search through. He assures his father and friends that Merlin is certainly located in the Trisystem.
Conn points out that finding Merlin may take a while, so he encourages his father and the others to locate a hypership to take their goods to the markets.

Odd, unexpected, slow, maybe not for everyone
    Any additional comments?
It's a layered story, first person all the way and in the end a self-revelatory tale. Nothing much seems to happen and I wouldn't have stuck to it if I were reading. However the audio version has a hypnotic feel that I found pleasant as background to other activities. Rupert Farley did an outstanding job. Still, it's an odd book and if you want a story with action leave this one well alone. If you want something a little different and are patient with stream of consciousness give it a try. I have just finished it and am still digesting it - thinking, so that's a very good sign. I hate reviews that include spoilers so I won't do that. Give it a try. You can always return on Audible.
My god - it's full of eyes!
Actually, what I mean is "I"s - as in 'first person singular': this book is full of them. Yes well it would be, as it's written from a first person perspective, but it becomes somehow very obvious: this story is about just one person - with a monkey named Tomas on his back, eroding his psyche from start to finish!
I found the 'setting up the mission' chapters pretty vague as to technology and distances, and does ANYONE ever really check out the crew's mental stability in fiction?
The central section of the story was the most intriguing, but then the protagonist starts to lose it and things begin to come apart, leading to a long drawn out, unsatisfying and ambiguous denouement. Sorry but there it is.

Kind of like a B Zombie movie.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Yes. I was originally attracted to this book because of its original concept--a partnership between a business man and the government to start a zombie zoo used to house accidents gone awry from creating a zombie military. Good concept. Sadly the execution was poor.
First there is the ridiculous beginning where a rich business man offers money for good business ideas. Then he proceeds both to fund the idea, make the creator a partner in the business. Sure, that happens. This book has very basic sentence structure reminiscent of "Dick and Jane" books. The dialogue is odd in places. For instance, when Ben is asking his girlfriend to marry him, he "looks at her eyes." Then he proceeds to ask her if she will "take his hand in marriage."
The author tells rather than shows through the entire book. His characters are based off of stereo-types, and sadly he cannot even keep his stereo-types straight. Donny is a liberal, animal rights protester in the beginning. At the end of the book, he is some kind of fundamentalist religious survivalist freak. Yeah, not even a psychotic break can explain that change.
If you can get past this stuff, the book is entertaining. The concept remains original and the ending is satisfying. The narrator is pretty good.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
In addition to the things discussed above, the addition of one likable character would have helped immensely. There is no clear hero or anti-hero. The story is about a group of characters--none of them particularly likable.

    Weird but good.
Where does A Perfect Machine rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
About the middle of the road.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I am not sure. Maybe cut down on the number of main characters.
What about John Bankss performance did you like?
    Good pace, easy to understand.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    Nope.
    Any additional comments?
This is an odd book. Not bad just odd. It's kind of hard to keep track of at times. Didn't much care for the ending, thought that it was really kind of bland and campy. It's still a good read and or listen. The Narrator does an excellent job at bringing the story to life.
Good start, not great at the end
Wonderfully unique premise with a total loss of coherence at the end. Performance of John Banks was as good as ever.
    Dreadful
Really, really poor. The all the characters are from the same city, yet half have English accents, half have pseudo American accents. The narrator does not have a good American accent, and not in the way that people say occasional English Hollywood actors have shaky American accents, this sounds like he's never even tried before.
The story makes no sense, has no regard for basic physics, and has 0 consistency for the size of the character. No motivations are clear, and worst of all, nothing is in any way explained. The story is based around a potentially interesting secret sub-culture, but it is never explored, explained, or really even referenced. DO NOT buy this if you're interested in the premise. Or, realistically, at all. I'm genuinely trying to think of a redeeming feature, but I can't.
Just don't buy this. If it were free, I'd say stay away.

    Publisher's Summary:
Second book in the series. Listen to Seeing Red: Ambassador, Book 1 first.
    3 December 2114
Cory Wilson is woken in the middle of the night with a summons to appear in the president of Nations of Earth's office. An aid worker in Djibouti has discovered a shipment of alien guns.
As ambassador to gamra, the extraterrestrial organization which controls the Exchange, the FTL wormhole network, Cory has often been critical of Earth's handling of extraterrestrial problems. This is his moment to shine, to apply his knowledge about alien customs, to, in the words of the president, "get those idiots out of there".
Except the usual suspects, the Zhori mafia who have caused trouble on Earth for a long time, are nowhere to be seen. This is something far more dangerous, something that involves all of northern Africa, something that provokes the anger of Asto, gamra's largest world. Asto's army is already prowling in orbit, ready to strike.
    Members Reviews:
Cori gets himself into a mess!
An enjoyable sequel to the first Ambassador novel, it builds on Cori's character, his relationship with Gamra and his new wife and her family/network. Navigating through political games, secrets and lies and the nuances of Indrahui, Gamra and Coldi make for an interesting and thought provoking second novel. It does feel like a prelude to the third book so I can't wait to find out what's next for Cori and Thayu and Nicha.
Sometimes the only answer is no more
The second book in the series did not disappoint. Action packed, thought provoking and very well narrated. I look forward to the next instalment.

    Publisher's Summary:
Alex Hogg faces a simple choice as she reaches her 16th birthday: journey south across the country and bring back a relic from the cursed city of Glass and Bone, or spend the rest of her life in shame and poverty under the cruel hand of Spearheart, her adoptive father. The prize? She stands to inherit his entire fortune, from the fertile fields he owns to the lucrative mining and coal trade with which he controls the feudal lands around him.
But the way is dangerous and she cannot hope to make it safely there without a guide. When a chance meeting with a mysterious Dalesman known only as Bear provides her with one, it sets Alex Hogg firmly on her quest, confident that she'll return to claim her inheritance and enjoy riches beyond her imagination.
But this giant of a man has a past that's marked by the Old Days, the time before when mankind teetered on the brink of destruction, and it's this past that Alex soon learns stands directly in her way. An army is being built and rumors are rife that an ancient vault has been opened; that a new world order is being born that will see the weapons of a forgotten past used to create a terrifying new future. Strange ships are flying again and weapons that can kill from far away are being used to force villages and towns into submission. Behind it all is a man from Bear's past who, as their journey takes them deeper into his plans, threatens to bring about a new apocalypse for a people who barely survived the last.
    Members Reviews:
    Are You Afraid of Bears?
The Wolf and the Bear is one of the most incredible adventure stories I've ever read! Period.
The Wolf, is Alex Hogg, a young teenage girl. The daughter of a whore, living in the household of a rich coal merchant. She may or may not be his daughter, but she's been told that if she travels to the City of Glass and Bone and returns with an artifact from the ancient times, the merchant's inheritance will be hers. She begins her quest.
In the local tavern, she meets a Dalesman - a wanderer by trade, who agrees to guide her on her quest. He's known as the Bear... Alan Harding.
As they travel, the pair meet and befriend several people, all of whom change their path, and their lives. Their adventures turn them to different paths and encounters, until they find it is their duty to help liberate their land from an evil man from hundreds of years past. A man with ancient weapons from ancient times, called guns. This man cannot die. His wounds heal rapidly. He needs no food or water to survive.
How can they overcome such power with only swords, knives and spears?
Much will be revealed to Alex during her travels with Bear. He turns her from a weak young girl into an experienced Dalesman, who can live and survive in the wilderness. A strong girl who can fight and even kill if necessary. Bear changes her life in other ways, too.
This story is an epic tale, best read sitting in front of a warm hearth with a beverage at hand. In addition of being an adventure taly, this becomes an indictment of our modern society, and all of it's ills and trappings. Man's greed has turned the 21st century world into a medieval land with people who get by by their own native instincts and intelligence.

    Publisher's Summary:
Influenza swept the planet. In months, two billion were dead. In the decimated United States, President Andrew Thomas signed an Executive Order to spray the national food and water supply with a flu vaccine. It spread and mutated up the food chain. The infected craved the flesh of the living and the undead walked the earth.
Overnight, Emily Gray's privileged world was ripped away. From pampered trophy wife to sharpshooter zombie hunter. From an elite address in San Francisco to the outskirts of an East Bay farm town. You never know what event will define you. The apocalypse showed Emily what she was truly capable of doing to survive.
Seth Ripley was a truck driver with simple dreams. Pay off his mortgage, not live paycheck to paycheck, and take care of his mom. The end of the world as he knew it stole all that away. His home and livelihood are gone and the only dream he has left is for his mother to awake from her diabetic coma brought on from the trials and tribulations of getting out of Oakland ahead of the horde of undead.
When surviving day to day is all you ask of life, love seems an unrealistic dream. Who would ever think that something as terrible as the zombie apocalypse could bring Seth and Emily something as wonderful as their other half, their soul mate, their true love?
Now all they have to do is survive death, destruction, and a madman who wants to control what is left of the world they knew.

    Any additional comments?
Maybe my expectations were too high, but it didn't hold my attention. Although it was not as good as I expected, I finished listening to this audiobook.
    Good book but...
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend reading the book, but will shy away from recommending the audible version. The narrator was so nasally that it was so distracting. Especially when the main character was a female, the nasally narration just kills any imagination for her.
What other book might you compare Love in the Time of Zombies to and why?
The closes book that comes to mind would be Z-Burbia, but that is not a fair comparison because the narration and the story fit perfectly in Z-Burbia.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
    One word, nasally.
Did Love in the Time of Zombies inspire you to do anything?
No, the story was good enough for me to finish, would have been better if the narrator was a female.
    Any additional comments?
This was such a mix bag of feelings for me. I enjoy all zombies genre especially the one that is not conventional. For instance, Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion, love that book and thought the movie was well done. I was hoping this was one of those book, it came close but the narrator really detracted my attention from enjoying the book.
This audiobook was given to me to me at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review, thanks, Audiobook Boom!
    Zombies and Love?
Yep, Its a story about zombies and love, I know, I know mention the word love or romance and some zombie book aficionados, hold their nose and run off like well a zombie hoard was at their doorstep!
If youre one of those Im here to tell you that youre missing out on one great audiobook.

    Progeny's children
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The story was great and took a few twists and turns with some surprises, both good and evil. The author combined two of his previous short stories into this full length book. Great scifi book
    Politicians!! Grrrrr
I know this is supposed to be a review about the wonderful story, Progeny's Children written by the talented Ray Jay Perreault and narrated by Christopher M. Allport....BUT I first need to rant a bit about the deep emotions this book has brought to the forefront. There is a lot of good about humankind.... BUT there is also a lot of hate, bigotry and fear. Sadly those ruled by the latter are why visiting aliens are going to wipe out the human race, unless unlike some humans and more like the wonderful US and THEM in this book they take a step back and realize that all types of beings are worth saving, even humans.
Now onto the book. The story was wonderful and definitely took a few twists and turns thus providing some surprises, both good and evil. Perreault combined two of his previous short stories into this full length book brilliantly, "Good Morning... Processes Must Be Improved" and "Progeny". That being said I feel that certain details of the various issues were repeated a few too many times when new discussion on that issue was to be undertaken. Also the production decision to put a beep at the end of a scene was a bit annoying, the pauses in the vocals was plenty of notice that the scene was changing. These were minor issues and did not detract from the overall appeal of the book.
Christopher M. Allport has some tempo and vocal qualities similar to Wil Wheaton who I am very familiar with and definitely appreciate. I also hear bits of sarcasm in Allports manner that as always appeals to my inner snark.
I am so appreciative to have been given a copy of this book for review and I look forward to future work from the author and narrator.
    Not Real? Not for long...
If you could sum up Progeny's Children in three words, what would they be?
    New reality coming.
What other book might you compare Progeny's Children to and why?
    Interstellar
Have you listened to any of Christopher M. Allports other performances before? How does this one compare?
    As usual -- excellent!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Just wait...it will happen.
    Any additional comments?
I received a free copy of this audiobook for an honest review.
    Thought provoking sci-fi story
This is an interesting and thought-provoking sci-fi story of political deception, human aggression, discrimination and moral dilemmas. This combination of his two short stories, Progeny and the Circle is Closed, has made for an excellent story. The author melded them together to give us a great story where humans left a dying planet and traveled to a new world, only to return to a healed Earth many centuries later.

Somewhat wary of her fellow snipers' attention and interaction with her, she maintains what she considers a professional front, but one that is not as well received by others - and one that earns her the nickname of "Ice Princess".
A technically skilled sniper, Gracie feels her shooting should speak for itself. But being a scout-sniper is far more than simple marksmanship. If she wants a career in the Corps, she must learn not only teamwork, but how to be a leader of Marines.
This is the second book in the series, but each book is standalone and does not have to be heard in conjunction with the others. The series follows two Marines and a Navy corpsman as they follow their individual career paths.

A good listen with great narration
    Any additional comments?
This was an interesting story but I did find my mind wondering. The story is based on a military women and her career. It fast forwards a lot and skips over a few years through out. For me something is lacking, there is action but I just do not fill it. She has two love interests but that is about all we know. Gracie has a very interesting career that is full of killing people and saving other military personal through her talents. She is a very talented sniper and does an outstanding job. The author takes you through lose of friends, bring back some that should have been dead. This is a story base on the future and the technology we could only dream about.
Ms. Schnaubelt does a really good job with her narration, there are no repeat of words nor any background noises or anywhere that the volume changes. If any breaks where taken I could not tell. It is a very clean and clear audio that the narrator deliveries in a delightful way. After each chapter announcement there is a number I am unsure of what that is. I thought it was a page count but a lot of them have the same number which left me confused. Her character voices were outstanding you have no trouble understanding who is talking or what they are feeling. Her male voices were just as enjoyable as her females ones. She puts emotion into her read you can feel each emotion as the characters go through their day to day life. I thought her performance was great except for those numbers after each chapter. The narrator has a very pleasant voice that pulls you in giving you an in depth feel of the danger around them.
There is nothing in this book that really grabbed me and wouldnt let me go. It isnt boring at all just nothing that really held my attention. Too many years were skipped and I felt a lot had been left out. I enjoyed the audio just not one I would want to listen to again nor does it want me to want to read the other books in this series. It could be because I had not read the first one and I am missing something. I hope you will give it a try the narrator alone is worth the listen.
