The elevator pitch is often hailed as an important part of promoting yourself or your brand, but is there a better way?
Yes, according to John Lees, career strategist, speaker, and author of many books including The Success Code: How to Stand Out and Get Noticed.
He says that may of us struggle with talking about ourselves with around 10% of people doing it quite naturally, 10% never doing it, and the other 80% need to learn a “quieter, more authentic, more natural style” of talking about themselves.
John says that the elevator pitch is “cheesy” and very “surface level” and unlikely to be remembered for very long, while speaking about a topic that you are passionate about presses people’s entertainment buttons which means people are more likely to remember it – and you!
In this Improve Radio quick listen, John shares some of his tips for talking about yourself that move away from awkward norms of self-promotion, including the elevator pitch.
