Locked On Baylor - Daily Podcast on Baylor Bears Football & Basketball

Dave Aranda's comparison of his 2025 Baylor team to the 2021 Big 12 Championship-winning squad is a bold statement that could signal a potential College Football Playoff (CFP) run. Here's why:

• Confidence and Belief:
  • Aranda's comparison suggests a high level of confidence in his current roster and their potential.
  • This belief can translate to heightened team morale and performance.
• Talent and Experience:
  • The 2021 Baylor team was known for its physicality, discipline, and talent. If Aranda sees similar qualities in his 2025 team, it indicates a strong foundation.
  • Having a team with experience is very important in college football.
• Offensive and Defensive Balance:
  • The 2021 team excelled in both offense and defense. If Aranda sees this balance in his current team, it's a promising sign.
  • Having a well rounded team is very important.
• Leadership and Culture:
  • The 2021 team had strong leadership and a cohesive team culture. Aranda's comparison suggests he sees similar leadership qualities in his current players.
  • Team culture is very important for a college football team.
• Improved Roster:
  • Aranda will have assessed the roster, and come to the conclusion that it is a roster that can compete at a high level.
• Big 12 Outlook:
  • The Big 12 landscape is evolving, and Baylor might see an opportunity to capitalize on potential shifts in power.

Aranda's statement is not just hyperbole; it's a strategic move to set high expectations and instill a championship mentality within his team.

Jason Asemota's decision to enter the transfer portal adds to the roster changes Baylor basketball is facing, and it has significant implications for the team's composition next season.

• Depth Concerns:
  • Asemota's departure further thins the team's depth, particularly in the forward positions.
  • This loss creates a need to fill a roster spot with a player who can contribute immediately.
• Offensive Impact:
  • While his playing time may have been limited, Asemota represented potential offensive production. His departure removes a scoring option from the team.
  • The team will need to find another player who can score.
• Recruiting Urgency:
  • Baylor's coaching staff now faces increased urgency to find replacements through the transfer portal or recruiting.
  • They will need to find a player that can fill the role that Asemota would have played.
• Team Chemistry:
  • Roster changes can affect team chemistry. The coaching staff will need to work to maintain a positive and cohesive environment.
  • Team chemistry is very important for a basketball team.
• Playing Time:
  • It is likely that Asemota is looking for more playing time at a different school.
  • This is a common reason for players to enter the transfer portal.
• Roster Reconstruction:
  • With multiple departures, Baylor is facing a degree of roster reconstruction. How effectively they navigate this process will determine their success next season.

In short, Asemota's transfer necessitates strategic roster management and quick decisions from the coaching staff to ensure Baylor remains competitive.

It's a valid point to compare how different programs capitalize on national championship success. While Baylor's 2021 title was a historic achievement, their subsequent trajectory has differed from, for example, Michigan State's post-2000 period. Here's a breakdown of the factors at play:

Factors Contributing to Baylor's Situation:

• Big 12 Competition:
  • The Big 12 conference is consistently one of the toughest in college basketball. This relentless competition makes deep tournament runs and consistent high-level performance extremely challenging.
  • This constant high level of competition takes a toll on teams.
• Tournament Volatility:
  • March Madness is inherently unpredictable. Even championship-caliber teams can face early exits due to the single-elimination format.
  • Any team can be upset on any given night.
• Roster Turnover:
  • Modern college basketball is heavily influenced by the transfer portal and NIL deals. This can lead to rapid roster turnover, making it difficult to maintain consistent team chemistry and performance.
  • This has made it much harder to keep teams together for long periods of time.
• Maintaining Elite Status:
  • It's incredibly difficult to sustain the level of dominance required to consistently reach Final Fours and win championships.
  • Even great programs have periods of time where they are not at the peak of their powers.

Differences from Michigan State:

• Michigan State, under Tom Izzo, has established a long-term culture of consistent tournament success. Even when not winning championships, they've consistently been a factor.
• While Baylor has reached high peaks, maintaining that level of consistency has been a challenge.

Key Takeaways:

• While Baylor's post-championship results might not have reached the same heights as their 2021 run, Scott Drew has still built a consistently strong program.
• The current landscape of college basketball presents unique challenges to maintaining consistent dominance.

In essence, while the goal is always to build on championship success, various factors can influence a program's trajectory.

No. 9 Baylor was just no match for top-seeded Duke in the Round of 32 in Raleigh, mercifully ending the Bears season in the first weekend for the fourth straight year. As Scott Drew and the team heads back to Waco, the coaching staff needs to figure out how to salvage the program's momentum from the last five years.

Baylor's offensive rebounding dominance against Mississippi State provides a crucial blueprint for upsetting No. 1 Duke, especially in the highly anticipated V.J. Edgecombe vs. Cooper Flagg matchup. Here's how:

• Second Chance Opportunities:
  • Baylor's ability to generate second-chance points through offensive rebounds can disrupt Duke's rhythm and create scoring opportunities, even against their formidable defense.
  • Extra possessions are key in a tight tournament game.
• Disrupting Duke's Defense:
  • Aggressive offensive rebounding forces Duke to expend extra energy on defense, potentially leading to defensive lapses and foul trouble.
  • This can take Duke out of their normal game.
• Edgecombe vs. Flagg Impact:
  • In the highly anticipated Edgecombe vs. Flagg matchup, Baylor's offensive rebounding can provide Edgecombe with extra possessions to showcase his athleticism and scoring ability.
  • Extra scoring opportunities are always important in a star player matchup.
• Controlling the Pace:
  • By securing offensive rebounds, Baylor can control the pace of the game, limiting Duke's transition opportunities and forcing them into half-court sets.
  • Controlling the pace of the game is very important in the tournament.
• Mental Edge:
  • Dominating the offensive glass can demoralize opponents, giving Baylor a mental edge and boosting their confidence.
  • Mental toughness is a huge part of the NCAA tournament.
• Exploiting Potential Weakness:
  • Duke, while very talented, can at times have lapses in defensive rebounding. Baylor can exploit this.

Essentially, Baylor's offensive rebounding prowess can be a game-changer, leveling the playing field against a highly favored Duke team.

The #9 Baylor Bears held off a furious comeback from #8 Mississippi State to advance to the Round of 32 with a 75-72 victory, awaiting the winner of Mt. St. Mary's and top-seeded Duke. Rob Wright and Norchad Omier had great games for Baylor, but the statcast is not working, so idk how much they scored.

The vast discrepancy between simulation predictions and Baylor's actual chances against Mississippi State highlights the limitations of relying solely on statistical models. Here's why Baylor has a strong upset potential:

• Tournament Volatility:
  • March Madness is notorious for upsets. Simulators can't fully account for the heightened intensity and unpredictable nature of tournament play.
  • Anything can happen in a single elimination tournament.
• Matchup Specifics:
  • Simulators often generalize team performance. Baylor's offensive versatility and Mississippi State's defensive inconsistencies create a favorable matchup that simulations might overlook.
  • Matchups are very important in basketball.
• Coaching Advantage:
  • Scott Drew has a proven track record of tournament success. His experience and strategic adjustments can neutralize Mississippi State's strengths.
  • Coaching is very important in the NCAA tournament.
• "Hunter Mentality":
  • Baylor's adoption of the "hunter mentality" indicates a focused and determined team. This intangible factor can significantly impact performance.
  • Mental toughness is very important in the tournament.
• Player Performances:
  • Individual player performances can swing tournament games. A hot shooting night from Baylor's guards or a dominant performance from their bigs could easily overcome statistical predictions.
  • Individual players can take over a game.
• Simulators are not perfect:
  • Simulators rely on data, and sometimes data does not tell the whole story.

Essentially, while simulations provide a statistical perspective, they can't capture the human element and unpredictable nature of March Madness.
