Locked On Baylor - Daily Podcast on Baylor Bears Football & Basketball

Predicting a championship game this far out is tricky, but here's a case for why BYU and Baylor could meet in the 2025 Big 12 Championship:

BYU:

• Offensive Firepower: BYU's offense has the potential to be explosive, with a solid quarterback and talented receivers. If they can find consistency, they can put up points against anyone.
• Defensive Improvement: The Cougars have shown signs of improvement on defense. If they can continue that trend, they'll be a tough team to beat.
• Experience: Many key players will have another year of experience under their belts, which can be invaluable in big games.

Baylor:

• Strong Coaching: Dave Aranda is a proven winner, and his coaching can elevate Baylor's talent.
• Offensive System: Baylor's system is known for being quarterback-friendly. If they can find a consistent QB, they can be dangerous.
• Recruiting: Baylor has been recruiting well, and those classes will start to make a difference by 2025.

Why this matchup is plausible:

• Both teams are on the rise: Both BYU and Baylor have shown upward trends in recent years.
• The Big 12 is open: With Texas and Oklahoma gone, the conference is more balanced, creating opportunities for teams like BYU and Baylor to rise to the top.
• Rivalry: There's already a budding rivalry between these schools, which would add extra intensity to a championship matchup.

While it's still very early in the 2024-25 college basketball season, there are some arguments to be made that Kansas might be a bit overrated at this point. Here's a breakdown:

Reasons for Potential Overrating:

• Preseason Hype: Kansas is consistently ranked high in preseason polls, and this year is no different. However, preseason rankings are often based on reputation and potential, not necessarily on proven performance.
• Defensive Concerns: While Kansas boasts a talented roster, their defense has shown vulnerabilities. They struggled to defend the three-point line last year, and it's unclear if those issues have been fully addressed.
• New Pieces: Kansas has added some key transfers and freshmen, but it takes time for a team to gel and develop chemistry. It remains to be seen how quickly and effectively these new players will integrate into the system.
• Early Season Struggles: While it's a small sample size, Kansas has looked shaky at times in their early games. This could be a sign that they are not quite as dominant as some predicted.

Reasons for Optimism:

• Talented Roster: Kansas boasts a wealth of talent, including potential All-Americans like Hunter Dickinson and a strong supporting cast.
• Coaching Excellence: Bill Self is a Hall of Fame coach with a proven track record of success. He has the ability to maximize his players' potential and lead them to a deep tournament run.
• Experience: Kansas has several experienced players who have been through the battles of high-level college basketball.

Overall:

It's still too early to definitively say whether Kansas is overrated. They have the talent and coaching to be a national championship contender. However, they also have some question marks, particularly on the defensive end, that need to be addressed. As the season progresses, we'll get a clearer picture of whether Kansas can live up to the high expectations.

Recruiting well in Central Texas is absolutely crucial for Baylor football for several reasons:

• Home-Field Advantage: Central Texas is Baylor's backyard. Landing top local talent provides a significant advantage, giving the Bears a strong foundation of in-state players who understand the program and are passionate about representing their home state.
• Fan Base: Recruiting top local talent helps to connect with the local community and build a stronger fan base. When fans see players from their own backyard succeeding, it creates a sense of pride and excitement.
• Rivalry: Baylor competes with other Texas schools for top recruits. Dominating recruiting in Central Texas is essential to maintain a competitive edge against in-state rivals like Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech.
• Program Identity: Recruiting top local talent helps to establish a strong program identity and build a winning culture. When top local players choose to stay home and play for Baylor, it sends a powerful message about the program's strength and appeal.

By consistently recruiting top talent from Central Texas, Baylor can build a sustainable foundation for success, enhance its fan base, and establish itself as a dominant force in college football.

Once down 13, Baylor fought back in Tuesday night's Big 12 classic to send BYU to overtime before the Cougars prevailed, 93-89. Kanon Catchings poured in 23 points, VJ Edgecombe dropped 28 and Rob Wright was the most clutch player on the floor.

Entertainment level aside, Baylor still can't find a way to beat good teams and is still battling to improve a fledgeling tournament resume.

Utah football enters the 2025 season with a mix of optimism and uncertainty.

Potential Strengths:

• Strong Defensive Foundation: Utah consistently fields strong defenses, and 2025 could be no exception. Returning key players on that side of the ball will be crucial.
• Coaching Experience: Coach Kyle Whittingham brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to the program.

Potential Challenges:

• Offensive Consistency: Utah's offense has been inconsistent in recent seasons. Finding a reliable starting quarterback and establishing a dynamic passing game will be crucial.
• Conference Competition: The Big 12 is a challenging conference. Teams like Texas, Oklahoma, and others consistently field strong programs.
• Travel and Home-Field Advantage: Utah's geographic location presents travel challenges. Playing road games across the vast expanse of the Big 12 can be physically and mentally demanding.

Possible Outcomes:

• Mid-Tier Finish: Utah could find themselves in the middle of the pack in the Big 12, competing for a bowl game berth.
• Surprise Contender: If the offense improves significantly and key players stay healthy, Utah could surprise some people and contend for a spot in the Big 12 Championship game.

Shedeur Sanders being selected as the first overall pick in the NFL Draft would significantly boost the Big 12's national profile and prestige.

• Increased Visibility: Having a Big 12 quarterback selected first overall would generate significant media attention and highlight the conference's talent pool.
• Recruiting Advantage: This success would enhance the Big 12's recruiting appeal, attracting top high school prospects who aspire to play in the NFL.
• Conference Strength: A successful NFL career for Sanders would further solidify the Big 12's reputation as a competitive conference that produces elite NFL talent.

Furthermore, Sanders' success would undoubtedly boost the profile of Colorado and his father, Deion Sanders, further elevating the visibility of the program and the conference.

In conclusion, Shedeur Sanders being the first overall pick in the NFL Draft would be a major win for the Big 12, enhancing its national profile, recruiting efforts, and overall prestige.

• Playing Style: Demin is more of a skilled scorer and shooter, while Edgecombe is a more explosive and athletic player.
• Strengths: Demin's primary strength is his shooting, while Edgecombe's is his athleticism and two-way potential.

Ultimately, the "better" prospect is subjective and depends on the specific needs and preferences of NBA teams.
