Locked On Baylor - Daily Podcast on Baylor Bears Football & Basketball

Following Ole Miss's dominant Gator Bowl win, Lane Kiffin stated that the victory was a "statement" after missing the CFP. He emphasized his pride in his players and their performance, subtly highlighting the team's exclusion from the playoff despite their strong season. This hypothetical Ole Miss vs. BYU matchup would be a highly anticipated clash of styles. Ole Miss: Known for their high-powered, explosive offense under Lane Kiffin, the Rebels would aim to push the tempo and put up points. BYU: A more methodical and disciplined team, BYU would likely rely on their strong defense and a balanced offensive attack to control the pace of the game. The game would likely feature a contrast in offensive philosophies, with Ole Miss seeking to score quickly and BYU aiming for a more controlled, time-consuming approach.

Late in the fourth quarter of the 2024 Peach Bowl, a controversial no-call on a potential targeting penalty against Texas safety Michael Taaffe sparked debate. The play occurred during a crucial Arizona State drive. Taaffe delivered a hard hit to an ASU receiver, and replays appeared to show helmet-to-helmet contact.

While some argued that the hit was a legal tackle, others believed it warranted a targeting penalty, which would have given Arizona State a crucial first down and a chance to potentially win the game in regulation. The no-call ultimately did impact the outcome of the game, as Texas won in double overtime, but it generated significant discussion about the application of the targeting rule in college football.

Baylor football's transfer portal activity in the 2024-25 offseason saw both departures and additions, but the Texas Bowl showed a glaring need at cornerback.

Departures: Several players, including wide receiver Jonah Burton and offensive tackle Alvin Ebosele, entered the transfer portal. These departures created openings on the roster for new talent.

Needs: Wide Receiver: With the departure of key players, wide receiver remains a position of need for Baylor. The team will likely look to add experienced and talented receivers to bolster their passing game.

Defensive Line: Strengthening the defensive line is crucial for Baylor's success. The team could benefit from adding depth and impact players along the defensive front.

Overall Depth: While Baylor has shown improvement, adding depth at various positions will increase competition and enhance the team's overall performance.

Addressing Needs: Baylor's coaching staff will actively utilize the transfer portal to address these needs. They will seek out players who fit their system and can make an immediate impact on the field. The success of Baylor's transfer portal activity will be crucial in determining their competitiveness in the upcoming season.

The Baylor Bears defense struggled to contain the high-powered LSU offense in the Texas Bowl.

Struggles Against the Pass: The Baylor secondary had difficulty limiting LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who effectively exploited mismatches and found open receivers throughout the game.

Lack of Pressure: The Baylor pass rush failed to generate consistent pressure on Nussmeier, allowing him ample time to survey the field and make accurate throws.

Missed Tackles: Missed tackles by Baylor defenders proved costly, allowing LSU to extend drives and rack up big plays. While the Baylor offense showed promise, the defensive struggles ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.

So maybe Brian Kelly was right.

Dave Aranda kept it blunt with reporters after Baylor's 44-31 loss to LSU in the Texas Bowl, saying the "moment was too big" for the Bears, leading to several mistakes throughout the game.

The 2024 Texas Bowl saw the LSU Tigers defeat the Baylor Bears 44-31 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier had a strong performance, throwing for 304 yards and three touchdowns. Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson also had a solid game, passing for a career-high 445 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough to overcome LSU's offensive output.

This victory capped off a successful season for LSU, while Baylor, despite the loss, showed significant improvement throughout the year and will look to build upon that foundation for the future.

Miami Hurricanes star quarterback Cam Ward made headlines by opting out of the second half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Ward, a projected first-round NFL Draft pick, played the entire first half, leading the Hurricanes to a 31-point lead. However, at halftime, he elected to sit out the remainder of the game. This decision sparked a heated debate among fans and analysts. Some criticized Ward for quitting on his team, while others defended his right to prioritize his future in the NFL.

Ward's decision highlighted the evolving landscape of college football, where players are increasingly prioritizing their professional futures. Ultimately, Ward's decision was a personal one, and only he can fully explain his reasoning. However, his actions will undoubtedly continue to fuel the ongoing discussion about player safety and the value of bowl games in the modern era of college football.

The Baylor Bears fell short in the Texas Bowl, losing to the LSU Tigers. LSU's offense, led by quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, proved too much for the Baylor defense to handle. Despite a strong offensive showing from their own quarterback, Sawyer Robertson, the Bears couldn't keep pace with the Tigers' scoring.

This loss marks a disappointing end to what was otherwise a successful season for Baylor. The team showed significant improvement throughout the year and will look to build on this foundation moving forward.
