Locked On Baylor - Daily Podcast on Baylor Bears Football & Basketball

Both Baylor basketball teams have Sweet 16 berths on the line Sunday, with the men taking on Clemson at 5:10 and the ladies battling Virginia Tech at 7:00.

The men have a boost with the assurance center Yves Missi is ready to play against a tough front line for the Tigers, who ousted New Mexico, 77-56 on Friday. Will that Baylor offense we saw Friday possibly be able to carry over to tonight's game?

The women have the benefit of facing Virginia Tech without their 3-time ACC Player of the Year Liz Kitley, who is out with an ACL injury. Nicki Collen doesn't see it as an easier task, however, as the Hokies are 16-0 at home this season.

Baylor basketball coach Scott Drew doubled down this week on a commitment to staying at Baylor, but honestly, he didn't have to. No one outside of a few ill-advised Louisville fans actually believed he was going to leave Waco to coach the Cardinals. In fact, I don't know if there is a job in college basketball he would leave Baylor for.

The Bears football program announced this week they will be honoring the 2013 and 2014 Big 12 championship teams this November before the TCU game, finally giving a chance for Baylor fans to thank those squads for the pride they brought to the university on the field. Oh yeah, and that era's most famous rival, Gary Patterson, will be on the Baylor sidelines.

Finally, the Bears men's and women's teams finally tip off the NCAA Tournament starting this morning, so how will the teams fare in their opening matchups?

The Colgate Raiders come into this first round matchup with Baylor as a 14 seed having won the Patriot League for the fourth year in a row. CNY Central's Tommy Sladek joins the show to talk about the Raiders chances and the rise of the program under Matt Langel.

The Bears will be without star guard Langston Love, whom Scott Drew ruled out for the weekend. Love has injured his ankle three separate times throughout the season. How can Baylor survive without him?

March Madness is taking over college sports, but quietly spring football has started at Baylor, and it is not off to a hot start. The Bears announced that not only one, but TWO nose tackles have medically retired.

According to KenPom, there is no way Baylor can win the basketball national championship this year. 95% of national champions in the KenPom era have been ranked 37th or better in adjusted defense before the tournament. Right now, Baylor is 64th. The only outlier of the top 37? Baylor in 2021.

Baylor women's guard Jana Van Gytenbeek announced she would stick around for one last year in Waco, solidifying a veteran-led backcourt for the Bears next year.

Baylor might have actually gotten a bit lucky with their NCAA Tournament draw, avoiding the two unequivocal best teams in the dance with Houston and UCONN being in different regions. Branden MacKinnon joins to dissect the west region and who to watch for. There is a team that worries Brandon, but it is not North Carolina or Arizona.

Baylor football legend Grant Teaff was awarded with a distinct honor over the weekend, as Snyder ISD announced their football stadium will now be named Grant Teaff Tiger Stadium. Teaff will have a ceremony at his alma mater this fall to make the name change official.

After a dismal first half where Baylor was down just one, the Bears erupted in the second half to dismiss the Cincinnati Bearcats from Kansas City, 68-56. Point guard RayJ Dennis was 0-8 in the first half with 5 turnovers, before turning it all around in the second half with 11 points and 5 assists.

Now, Baylor gets the second seeded Iowa State Cyclones in the tournament semifinals. The Bears won the only matchup between these two teams this year, a wild 70-69 victory at the Foster Pavilion that included a Scott Drew ejection, a 20-0 run, and a Cyclones buzzer beater that was waved off.

On the third day of the Big 12 tournament, the third seeded Baylor Bears finally have their quarterfinal opponent. The Cincinnati Bearcats knocked around short-handed Kansas, blowing out the Jayhawks to the tune of 72-52. Can Baylor match the exceptionally physical Bearcats?

Looking at the conference tournament, one thing the Bears can really benefit from is giving Langston Love more game reps as he returns from nagging ankle injuries. Love was a shoo-in for Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year until his injury and is still the only player in the conference to average in double figures without a start this year.

Plus, the Baylor women are looking at a potential rematch with an NCAA Tournament foe.

Baylor's Big 12 tournament campaign kicks off tomorrow, but does the tourney even matter? For teams like Baylor who are locked into a top four seed in the NCAA's, the Big 12 tournament is really just a short vacation to Kansas City in March.

If you are looking to cheer the Bears to Big 12 glory, who are you hoping to see them face? The winner of the Cincinnati vs. Kansas game gets the honor of facing Baylor Thursday and, weirdly, the "easier" opponent may not be who you think.

Kentucky senior Ajae Petty is reportedly entering the transfer portal, and the double-double machine is a perfect fit for what Baylor needs in the 2024-25 season.
