Locked On Blue Jays - Daily Podcast On The Toronto Blue Jays

Kirby and the Crystal Shards on Nintendo 64 was the first non-Pokemon game I ever got 100% on. It was awesome.

After a period of mental stress, burnout and just not feeling like herself anymore, A.J. Andrews returns again with the first of a trio of podcasts looking at what the Blue Jays have done to improve their pitching staff in 2021, and it starts with the man who has been waiting a long time for his day, Kirby Yates. Andrews discusses why he was available at a knock-down price, why he was more attractive to the Blue Jays than some other options, and how he will impact the roles of Rafael Dolis and Jordan Romano.

I don't care if no one gets that reference. I Believe is a banger.

No, Kirby Yates isn't getting his day in the sun yet. That's coming! But the Blue Jays made another signing to pull A.J. Andrews out of another spiral, and she's going to talk about why Marcus Semien is even better than Michael Brantley! Really! There's proof in the numbers! She also tries to put together a Blue Jays lineup and comes to the conclusion that they are going to be a force in the AL East. Now about that starting pitcher...

OK, now we're going to talk about George Springer.

Apologies to Kirby Yates, but you'll have your day in the sun at some point. Right as A.J. Andrews started recording this episode, the news broke that pending a physical, George Springer was going to be a Blue Jay. She does her best to try and shift so dramatically, a turn not seen since Hyun-Jin Ryu's pre-Christmas deal. Springer checks all the boxes Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins wanted to fill. Now what happens? Andrews tries to contextualize and temper expectations, but honestly, it's hard to do that right now.

You know it's big when I bust out the capital letters.

No, this isn't about George Springer. Not yet. Message the podcast when his name is on the virtual dotted line. But, the Blue Jays have started signing people! So many people we need to stretch it out over multiple podcasts! First up, the inking of former FA darling Tyler Chatwood to a one-year, $3 million deal. A.J. Andrews discusses why Chatwood fell from that lofty contract he signed with the Cubs, what the Blue Jays can expect from him, and what Jays From the Couch writer Jim Scott brought up and why Chatwood fits right into that strategy.

You know, like when you're staring at the remaining Christmas candy and you know you shouldn't eat it but it's just sitting there? Those feelings.

It has been a rough couple of days, in baseball and in the world at large. A.J. Andrews does her best to fight through all the pain she's been feeling to try and discuss what the heck the Blue Jays do now that Francisco Lindor and Tomoyuki Sugano are off the table. She talks about how Toronto was never a serious player for Lindor, but should be interested in putting together that kind of package for a third baseman, how the Mets' big-spending ways won't be impacted and George Springer is no closer to Toronto now than he was before, and how Sugano's excuse for not signing with Toronto ranks up there as one of the biggest bald-faced lies ever told in baseball.

I'm not feeling much of a difference between 2020 and 2021 yet. I blame the snow.

A.J. Andrews made a resilution to stop recording all her podcasts in the wee hours of the morning, and she's sticking to it with this first episode of 2021! Now she wants to hold the Blue Jays to their resolution of getting more talent in the organization via free agency! They are close on a pair of arms, and Andrews discusses how adding Tomoyuki Sugano would be a much more palatable solution than going after attention-seeker Trevor Bauer, the difference between bringing Sugano over as opposed to other notable Japanese hurlers in the AL East past, and how Liam Hendriks' visit to Dunedin is the most concrete sign yet of a player being close to signing with the Blue Jays and means more than mere speculation.

Happy New Year's y'all. Look forward to all the discussion in the next year about this team.

We have come to the finale as A.J. Andrews delivers her final episode counting down the Top Five Most Important Blue Jays of the 2020 season. For some people, the top slot is not a surprise, but it might be unearned in the eyes of others. Yes, her selection for the most important member of the MLB team in 2020... is Nate Pearson. Not just for the promise he held and what he tried to deliver on, but how he struggled to do so and already showed signs of adjusting what he needed to do following an injury break. A.J. assesses how he looks moving forward and what he can do in 2021 to make sure he gets more than a couple innings of postseason action.

See, now this is where I'm going to expect the yelling to start. Because y'all are smart and can put two and two together from here.

A.J. Andrews is in the homestretch of her countdown ahead of New Year's Day, and her number two selection should really get the people talking. Because that means someone else is at number one and given the criteria of this list, it may not make as much sense. Still, Hyun-Jin Ryu takes down this slot, and A.J. explains how the lefty needed to come out with a strong season to justify the contract signed, and how in backing up that investment, Ryu set the tone for this offseason's spending. She then looks ahead at what Ryu needs to do next year to continue this success.

Yup. Continuing to be super mysterious about this list. Doesn't help the SEO, but the intrigue! It's palpable!

At least until she spoils it shortly after starting this episode. For now though, A.J. Andrews continues her ranking of the Top Five Most Important Blue Jays of 2020 with a look at the top MVP-vote-getter among Blue Jays players this season, Teoscar Hernández. There's a big reason Teoscar was able to have the season he did despite managing to strike out at the same rate he always did, and Andrews covers it while emphasizing just how important it was for him to step up in more ways than one for Toronto. Now if only he could stop making the host scream her lungs out with some of his plays in the outfield...

The most obvious answer is the correct one, but I'm trying to filler out the Spotify description so it's kind of a mystery.

A.J. Andrews continues her countdown of the Top Five most important Blue Jays of 2020 and number four takes us into the outfield for the first time, and maybe he should have been referenced in the famous sons talk, but hey! Mystery! Anyway, Andrews discusses the strides Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made last season, especially on his defence to offer the Blue Jays some sort of answer in regards to the players charged with roaming the artifical turf once the team returns to Toronto.
