Big news just hit Washington. Assistant coach Mitch Love's on leave. NHL's investigating. It's shaking things up right before camp.

I've been watching these informal skates at MedStar Ice Complex. Place is buzzing. Almost the full roster's there. Ovechkin, Wilson, Dubois — I'm seeing all the big names. These sessions are high-tempo. Coaches are definitely taking notice.

I've got my eye on Justin Sourdif, our new pickup from Florida. Two-year deal for this kid. He's got skills, I tell you. Clean positioning, finds space, plays both center and wing. His numbers back it up too — 34 points in 43 AHL games last season.

Our veterans? They came back strong. I'm seeing Tom Wilson looking faster out there. Dylan Strome's still that playmaker we know. They're setting the tone.

These skates aren't just warm-ups, folks. It's an audition. I'm watching these guys push each other. That's exactly the vibe you want heading into camp.

Oh, and have you seen the new jersey? Screaming Eagle's back, but in red, white, and blue this time. Looks sharp with that rounded shoulder yoke, those stripes, and special patches. I can't wait to see it debut on October 17th against the Wild.

The Washington Capitals made a bold move when they traded Darcy Kuemper to Los Angeles and brought in Logan Thompson from Vegas. What looked like a depth addition quickly turned into a franchise-changing move, as Thompson emerged as Washington’s new number-one goalie. At just 27 years old, he delivered elite regular-season numbers with a .910 save percentage and a 2.49 goals-against average, then elevated his play in the postseason with the best high-danger save percentage of any playoff goalie. The Capitals didn’t hesitate to lock him up long term, signaling confidence that Thompson is the present and future in net.

Meanwhile, Darcy Kuemper had a late-career resurgence with the Kings, posting Vezina-caliber numbers at 34 years old. His rebound raised questions about whether Washington gave up too soon. But with Kuemper nearing the end of his career and Thompson entering his prime, the Capitals’ front office clearly saw the timeline fit. By acquiring both Thompson and Pierre-Luc Dubois in the deal, Washington set themselves up for years to come. The franchise now has stability in goal and a centerpiece forward, making this one of the smartest moves in recent Capitals history.

The Washington Capitals face a pivotal decision heading into the new season: Who should center Alex Ovechkin? Dylan Strome delivered a career-high 82-point campaign, showcasing strong hockey IQ, smart decision-making, and proven chemistry with Ovechkin. While not the fastest or most physical player, Strome consistently generates offense, wins crucial shifts in the offensive zone, and provides the steady, reliable playmaking that Ovi thrives on.

On the other side, newcomer Pierre-Luc Dubois brings size, physicality, and elite advanced stats to Washington. With a 62% Goals For Percentage and 2.42 points per 60 minutes, Dubois has the raw upside to be a dominant force. However, penalties and consistency remain question marks. The battle between Strome’s reliability and Dubois’ high ceiling could define the Capitals’ lineup decisions this year—and may be one of the biggest storylines to follow all season.

The Washington Capitals are heading into the 2025-26 NHL season with a heavy dose of youth, as top prospects like Andrew Cristall, Hendrix Lapierre, and Ivan Miroshnichenko battle for roster spots alongside veterans Sonny Milano and new addition Justin Sourdif. General manager Chris Patrick is placing trust in the development pipeline, creating intense competition for bottom-six roles while injecting more speed, skill, and versatility into the lineup.

Beyond the big-name prospects, players like Bogdan Trineyev, Henrik Rybinski, and Ilya Protas add intrigue to training camp, as each looks to prove they belong in the NHL full-time. With Declan Chisholm strengthening defensive depth and several veterans facing make-or-break years, the Capitals’ camp will be one of the most competitive in recent memory—setting the tone for a season that blends experience with the promise of the next generation.

The Washington Capitals enter the 2025-26 NHL season with momentum, depth, and plenty of intrigue. After last year’s playoff breakthrough and Alex Ovechkin’s historic goal-scoring milestone, Washington looks to push further in the Metro Division race. Key veterans like Dylan Strome, Pierre-Luc Dubois, and John Carlson will be tasked with leading the charge, while Martin Fehérváry, Rasmus Sandin, and Jakob Chychrun solidify one of the league’s most balanced blue lines. Goaltending stability with Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren provides the backbone, as Spencer Carbery looks to build on his Jack Adams-winning system.

But the biggest questions loom: how will Ovechkin’s usage evolve, can Dubois find another gear in Washington, and will the Caps’ middle-six deliver the secondary scoring they need? Emerging talents like Connor McMichael, Ryan Leonard, Ivan Miroshnichenko, and Justin Sourdif could make the difference between a strong playoff berth and a true Cup run. With a projected 100–110 points, the Capitals’ mix of experience and youth makes them one of the NHL’s most intriguing teams heading into 2025-26.
