Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals

The playoffs were a tough ending to an up and down season for the Capitals. After being eliminated in just four games, it was disappointing but good to see the young guys like McMichael and Lapierre step up and play well under the high pressure of the postseason. This team exceeded expectations considering the roster turnover from the start of the season, evolving in a way we couldn't have anticipated. But in the end, it presented an opportunity for the next generation of Capitals to gain valuable experience.

The status of veterans like Oshie remains unclear, as his back problems may force him to reconsider returning. He's been a core leader on and off the ice, bringing energy and compete, so it's impressive what he's done for himself and the organization over the years. We'll give him time and support whatever decision he makes about his future. Offense will need to come from within and from new additions, with Ovechkin penciled in for 42 goals at age 38 but not able to carry the team alone anymore. More speed and size on defense could help too.

It was a transition year with ups and downs but opportunities emerged for youth to develop. The early playoff exit stings but can serve as motivation to improve this offseason. Externally and internally, we'll look for ways to build on the positives and address the weaknesses to come back stronger next season.

Tom Wilson is a critical piece of the Washington Capitals' present and future success. As one of the team's alternate captains and a veteran at just 30 years old, Wilson provides invaluable leadership on and off the ice. His rare blend of physicality, offensive production, and intangibles make him a keystone player. This past season, despite injuries and lineup shuffles, Wilson still produced at a high level with 18 goals and 35 points in 74 games while making his second All-Star appearance. With Alex Ovechkin entering the twilight of his illustrious career in Washington, Wilson's role as a leader will only expand. His seven-year contract extension begins next season, perfectly aligning with the need for Wilson to step up as the face of the next era of Capitals hockey. Nicklas Backstrom's uncertain playing future also opens the door for Wilson's voice to grow louder. Wilson has earned high praise from teammates for his work ethic, accountability, and team-first mentality. The Capitals will lean heavily on these traits as Wilson guides and mentors the organization's young core. His experience overcoming adversity this past season, including losing Backstrom and having to adapt to Evgeny Kuznetsov's departure, has only strengthened Wilson's leadership abilities. He is ready and eager to embrace being the heart, soul, and identity of the Capitals. With his rare power forward playing style and growing intangibles, Tom Wilson is clearly indispensable to everything Washington is building towards now and into the future.

TJ Oshie's future in the NHL remains uncertain as he continues to battle chronic back issues that have plagued him in recent seasons. Oshie acknowledged that it would be difficult to definitively say he is retiring, expressing a desire to continue playing if he could get some assurance that his back problems can be resolved. The lingering pain has been his biggest obstacle to playing at 100%, making it a challenge just to get his body ready for games. Things reached a breaking point this past season when, after only playing 8 games, Oshie suffered a hard hit from Artemi Panarin in the playoffs that required him to urgently fly his doctor in to get ready for Game 3. Adding insult to injury, he then took a dangerous hit into the boards from Matt Rempe that broke his left hand. As excruciating as that was, Oshie insisted that a broken hand was like a mere hangnail compared to the constant agony from his back problems. He has tried solutions like a double ablation procedure but it provided only temporary relief, as there are multiple issues plaguing his back. The pain has deteriorated his quality of life, leaving him sometimes unable to even get off the floor to go to the bathroom and requiring him to resort to using water bottles. For Oshie, playing through pain is nothing new after over a decade in the NHL. But he longs for the simpler days when all it took was some coffee and a hot tub to get ready for a game, not the exhaustive treatments he now needs just to make it onto the ice. While Oshie remains unsure if he will officially retire, his fate rests largely on whether doctors can find a way to resolve his back troubles. If he can get healthy again, his passion for hockey still burns strongly enough that he would love to return for another season. Dan then talks about the future of Nick Backstrom on the Capitals and former Caps coach Peter Laviolette's kind words about the team

The Capitals were unceremoniously swept in the first round of the playoffs by the New York Rangers, abruptly ending what was largely a disappointing season for the once-mighty franchise. This humiliating defeat makes it clear that changes must be made this offseason if the Capitals hope to regain their competitive edge. GM Brian MacLellan faces tough questions about who should stay and who should go as he looks to retool the roster. As hockey insiders Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman discussed, one player who could be on the move is goalie Darcy Kuemper. After the Capitals acquired him  with high hopes, Kuemper posted the worst numbers of his career in Washington, with a bloated 3.31 goals against average and an abysmal .890 save percentage. He finished with a losing record of just 13-14-3 and did not record a single win after February 26th. With three years remaining on his expensive $5.25 million per year contract, the Capitals may look to trade Kuemper in the offseason, though they would likely need to retain some of his salary to make him palatable for other teams. While Kuemper does have a Stanley Cup championship to his name from his time in Colorado, his poor performance this past season makes him a tough sell. The emergence of backup Charlie Lindgren is a key factor here. Lindgren excelled when given the starting reins, playing in 28 of the last 35 games and leading the entire league with 6 shutouts. His unexpectedly strong play suggests he could take over as the starter next season, making Kuemper an expendable asset. With promising young goaltenders Clay Stenson and Hunter Shepard waiting in the wings as well, the Capitals have internal options beyond Kuemper. In addition to their goaltending quandary, the Capitals also face pressing questions about the roles of superstars Alex Ovechkin and TJ Oshie going forward. Ovechkin's ice time was managed carefully down the stretch this season as the aging captain chases down Gretzky's career goals record, and that strategic load management could very well continue into next season and beyond. Oshie, meanwhile, has battled mounting injury issues recently, playing in just 52 games this past disappointing season. Now 37 years old, retirement is not out of the question for the ailing yet inspirational leader. Losing Oshie's veteran presence would leave another gaping hole in the lineup that would need to be addressed. After their embarrassing early playoff exit, MacLellan and the Capitals clearly have a long offseason ahead as they look to reconfigure their aging roster and modify their strategy to make this team a true Stanley Cup contender once again. Many tough decisions await, but substantial change is clearly needed to reverse their downward trajectory.

The Washington Capitals' season came to an abrupt and disappointing end tonight as they were swept in four games by the New York Rangers in the first round of the NHL playoffs. After defying expectations all regular season long by clawing their way into the postseason despite an aging roster, lack of depth, and trading away key players at the deadline, the Caps ultimately fell flat when it mattered most.

Right from the opening puck drop of Game 1, it was clear this series would be uphill battle for Washington. A careless giveaway by defenseman Nick Jensen led directly to an early Rangers goal setting the tone. The Capitals seemed undisciplined and unfocused, taking unnecessary penalties and allowing multiple power play goals. Despite Alex Ovechkin typically elevating his game in the playoffs, the captain was held scoreless and mostly ineffective against New York's smothering defense. Meanwhile, the Rangers young stars like Kaapo Kakko and Adam Fox outworked and outhustled the Caps. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin also thoroughly outplayed Washington's Charlie Lindgren. Besides a few sparks from the team's rookies, the Caps generated little offense and lacked the desperation needed to extend the series. Ovechkin was never able to make his typical impact, culminating in him being held pointless for the first time in 15 career playoff appearances. A late game misconduct penalty on T.J. Oshie seemed to seal the Caps' fate.

While there were some promising performances from Washington's youth like Hendrix Lapierre and Martin Fehervary, it simply wasn't enough to overcome the lackluster play of the team's veterans. The early playoff exit calls into question what moves the Capitals will make this offseason to revamp their aging core into true contenders once again. For now, a disappointing end to a once-promising season.

The Washington Capitals are looking to jump start their sputtering offense heading into Game 3 of their first round playoff series against the New York Rangers , and it appears coach Peter Laviolette is ready to shake up his forward lines in an effort to generate more scoring. If Thursday's practice was any indication, it seems rookie winger Ivan Miroshnichenko will slot into the lineup on the fourth line, replacing veteran grinder Nicolas Aube-Kubel on right wing. Aube-Kubel was relegated to working with the scratches after practice, a clear sign his spot is in jeopardy.

Laviolette has kept his lineup intact through the first two games, both losses, but with the team now facing a pivotal Game 3 at home, the urgency to simply secure a win has reached a fever pitch. Miroshnichenko brings an intriguing mix of speed, tenacity and physicality that could provide a much-needed spark. "His speed was on display and he was tenacious all over the ice on the puck," Laviolette noted after practice. The 19-year-old rookie has seen spot duty with the Caps this season when called up from the AHL, and while throwing a young, inexperienced player into the fire in the playoffs is always a gamble, the Caps have very few options left to try and revive their scuffling offense.

Captain Alex Ovechkin has yet to make an impact through two games, mustering just one shot on goal as the Panthers have made stopping him a focus. Ovechkin acknowledged something seems "a little bit off" but tried to project a calm confidence things would turn around on home ice. "We just have to calm down. Yeah, we're a young team, but we still have an experienced team, you know," he said. "We have to calm down, play simple with the puck, don't think about it too much, and it will come." Ovechkin's longtime linemate T.J. Oshie has also struggled, as the duo have combined for just two shots at even strength. With the Caps' playoff lives on the line and the series shifting back to Washington, the team will look to their captain to lead the way offensively. But Ovechkin will need help, and Miroshnichenko will have a chance to provide it and potentially give the Caps the critical victory they need to get back in the series.

The Washington Capitals, with Alex Ovechkin at the forefront, find themselves navigating through some challenges early in the NHL season. Ovechkin, a player known for his dynamic scoring ability and leadership, surprisingly recorded all zeros in the first game and managed only one shot on goal in the third game, signaling a potential dip in his usual high-level performance. His involvement, or lack thereof, has sparked concerns among fans and analysts alike, especially after a mishandled pass led to Mika Zibanejad scoring a goal for the New York Rangers, further highlighting Ovechkin's off moments. Ovechkin himself acknowledged the error, attributing it to an unlucky bounce but accepting the need for safer play in crucial moments. Despite his struggles, it's essential to remember Ovechkin's history of bouncing back and the team's overall strategy, including adjustments to their power-play setup and the opposition's focused efforts to limit his impact on the game. Later Dan talks about the importance of physicality in the series. And to close the show he talks about how the Caps aren't giving up and will fight until the finals whistle

The Capitals fell 4-2 in their second game of the playoffs against the Rangers, a disappointing result after showing promise early on. The Caps started strong, controlling the pace in the first 10 minutes and generating hope they could pull out a win. However, sloppy play and costly penalties ultimately doomed Washington. Connor McMichael initially got the Caps on the board, but New York soon stole back momentum with a deflected goal that tied it up. As the Rangers began dictating the game's flow, Mika Zibanejad and Jack Roslovic managed to beat Caps goalie Charlie Lindgren to make it 3-2. Alex Ovechkin, who seemed out of sorts and clumsy with the puck leading to turnovers, was called out by coach Carbery for looking "a little bit off" through the first two games. K'Andre Miller then drove for the net to extend New York's lead to 4-2. Dylan Strome did score his first goal of the playoffs to briefly tie it 2-2, but it wasn't enough. Lindgren stopped 23 of 27 shots in the losing effort. The Caps showed some life late when Tom Wilson scored to cut the deficit to 4-3, earning his eighth career multi-point playoff game. However, despite pulling their goalie, Washington's attempted comeback fell short as they struggled to generate enough traffic and clean entries on the power play against Shesterkin. A controversial non-call on a hit to T.J. Oshie's head by Artemi Panarin further marred the game. The officials deemed it a legal check, but the missed penalty illustrated the Capitals' overall lack of discipline and structure that allowed New York to seize control of the crucial second game.
