Locked On Coogs - Daily Podcast on Houston Cougars Football and Basketball

Houston Cougars football enters the 2026 season with major questions surrounding its defense, pass rush, linebacker experience, and ability to remain among the Big 12’s best units. In this episode of Locked On Coogs, Parker Ainsworth breaks down Houston’s defensive outlook under head coach Willie Fritz and defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong before sitting down with veteran safety Kentrell Webb at Big 12 Media Days.

The episode examines whether last season’s inconsistency was a warning sign or simply part of the growing process. Houston delivered strong defensive performances against teams such as Arizona State and Arizona, but also struggled to contain West Virginia’s mobile quarterback. With Eddie Walls and Carlos Allen gone after producing most of Houston’s sacks, the Cougars must rebuild their pass rush around newcomers and returning contributors including Ashton Porter, Demarian Thomas, Ezra Gabara, Khalil Laufau, and Latrevian McCutcheon.

Webb explains what it means to serve as the “quarterback of the defense,” communicate Austin Armstrong’s calls, organize the secondary, and help younger players line up correctly in loud, high-pressure moments. He also discusses the impact of transfers Jalen “Jay” White, Trent Walker, and Patrick Overmyer, along with the competition created by Houston’s improved size and depth.

A major theme of the conversation is Houston’s “head down guy” culture. Webb uses the phrase to describe teammates who avoid distractions, embrace daily work, and fit Willie Fritz’s disciplined approach. Ainsworth connects that mentality to Houston’s broader identity: tough, focused, unglamorous, and built through consistent effort.
