Will Joc Pederson be back with the San Francisco Giants in 2023? It's easy to assume that a big year means he'll be out the door, based on the likes of Kris Bryant last year, but Pederson is a different type of player. His ceiling is more limited due to the fact that he's a platoon player with limited defensive or baserunning upside.
These factors make it more likely that the SF Giants will want to bring him back, because he won't cost something absurd like Bryant's seven-year, $182 million contract (which is already looking regrettable). A comp for Pederson may be Kyle Schwarber, who got a four-year, $79 million deal from the Phillies.
Also asked and answered: What would it take for Luis González to stay in the big leagues? What happens to Jakob Junis when Tony DeSclafani comes back? What about Matthew Boyd? Are the Giants a legit destination for Aaron Judge and Juan Soto? Will Wilmer Flores be back in 2023? What is prospect Casey Schmitt's potential?

Joc Pederson has outperformed most of the top free agents San Francisco Giants fans wanted the team to sign. Whether it's Seiya Suzuki, Kris Bryant, or Marcus Semien, Pederson has bested them all.
Overall, the SF Giants' offense has been among the best in the game—again. Despite the loss of Buster Posey to retirement and Bryant to the Colorado Rockies, the Giants have a 114 team wRC+, which places them in the top five in all of baseball. The narrative that "everything went right last year" is simply false, so the Giants did have room for improvement with several players. Mike Yastrzemski had a down year, but has rebounded in a major way in 2022. They also dealt with many injuries last year, and unfortunately that has carried over into 2022.
But on the whole, the Giants have been able to pick up the slack. Pederson is largely responsible, as his 160 wRC+ is among the best in baseball. Overall, the team has scored 5.19 runs per game, second in MLB behind only the Dodgers. Their weaknesses have actually been pitching and defense, which no one really expected. Sure, they have some questionable defenders like Darin Ruf and Wilmer Flores, but they were able to perform adequately last season. This year, their defense has not been very good and the pitching has under-performed. Much of that looks like bad luck, however, and should correct as the season goes on. If they can pitch better and continue to hit well, they could really take off as the season goes on.

That might have been the wildest game in franchise history. This game appeared to be over multiple times, only for the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets to stage impossible comebacks. In the end, the Giants prevailed in the bottom of the 9th after Joc Pederson tied the game with a two-out single and Brandon Crawford won it with a walk-off knock.
Pederson hit three home runs in the game and drove in eight runs. It was one of the best individual offensive performances in baseball history, especially from a win probability added perspective. Prior to the game, he got lost in conversation with Barry Bonds. Pederson says he noticed that it was almost game time and had to rush to put on his jersey and get ready. He was so locked into what Bonds was saying, and then he went out and had an all-time performance.
But the game really never should've been within the Mets' grasp. Tyler Rogers coughed up seven runs on seven hits in the 8th inning, and Camilo Doval allowed two additional hits in the inning. It was an unacceptable slip, and one that has become all too familiar for Giants pitchers this season. Their team ERA is among the worst in the game, which is unacceptable given the talent they have as a staff. Their peripherals remain strong, suggesting better results should come. However, the team defense has been flat-out bad, which has led to worse results for the pitchers. They need to tighten that up in a major way.

The San Francisco Giants' starting rotation has been the unluckiest unit in baseball. They've allowed the highest BABIP, and as a team they have the biggest gap between their ERA and their FIP. Results are all that matters in the end, but it's hard to explain these numbers with anything other than luck. Maybe a bit of bad defense, too.
It happened to Alex Cobb again last night. He was cruising along before five runs came across after two were out. Three bloop hits with two outs ended up scoring two runs, then Pete Alonso really made the SF Giants pay with a back-breaking three-run homer. It was too much to overcome, and Cobb (6.25 ERA, 2.73 FIP) has by far the biggest gap between his ERA and his FIP among pitchers with at least 30 innings pitcher. Carlos Rodón and Alex Wood are also in the top 13 in that category among 127 pitchers with at least 30 IP.
The team is on its second five-game losing streak in the month of May. It's been an ugly stretch of baseball, bad fortune being just a part of it. Looking down to the minors for some potential help and/or bright spots, David Villar remains a call-up candidate as he continues to dominate in Triple-A. He would need to be added to the 40-man roster. Kyle Harrison, meanwhile, earned a promotion to Double-A after he struck out exactly half of the 118 batters he faced this season. He was great in San Jose last year, and somehow managed to get significantly better in Eugene this year. Harrison is just 20 years old, and he's getting closer to the major leagues. His rise is something for Giants fans to watch very closely.

It's been an ugly stretch for the San Francisco Giants both on and off the field. They've lost four straight, falling to five games back in the NL West. They've been decimated by injures all season, and in particular in the last few days. Through it all, however, they have a multi-game lead on the NL's final playoff spot as we are about to cross the 1/4 mark of the season.
LaMonte Wade Jr., Brandon Belt, Curt Casali, and Austin Slater have all gone on the injured list since Friday. Also since Friday, the SF Giants got spanked around in a three-game sweep by the Padres in San Francisco. And things don't get any easier with the New York Mets coming into town tonight. Even though things have been ugly lately, the Giants are still 22-18 and have a 2.5-game lead over the NL's final playoff spot. Making the playoffs via winning the division was always the less likely route, so it's not terribly unexpected that they're not in first place.
Their starters have allowed the majors' highest average on balls in play (BABIP). The team's ERA is much, much higher than its FIP. This suggests that they've deserved better results, and it also suggests that better results should lie ahead. We will find out, but it is an encouraging sign that they've managed to play overall above-.500 baseball despite a lot of things going wrong so far in 2022.

Last year, the San Francisco Giants did more than get the better of the Padres. When all was said and done, the Giants were at the top of the NL West mountain, winning 107 games and the NL West crown. The Padres, a team that was expected to contend with the Dodgers for the division title, fell completely flat and finished below .500.
So far this year, these two teams have been neck-and-neck all season long. San Diego currently holds an edge, with a 1.5-game lead over the SF Giants. Which makes this upcoming series all the more important. With a winning series, the Giants can close the gap. If the Pads with the series, however, they'll gain some important separation.
Locked On Giants host Ben Kaspick and Locked On Padres host Javier Reyes discuss all the relevant story-lines as these two teams are set to clash for the second time in 2022. From Carlos Rodón as the Giants' rotation to Fernando Tatis Jr.'s dirt-bike injury, they get you set for what promises to be a compelling series.

Juan Soto to the San Francisco Giants? It's not as crazy as it might sound if the Nationals do indeed decide to move him. With more than 2.5 years of club control remaining, the Nationals would rightfully want multiple elite prospects in return. We're talking Kyle Harrison and Marco Luciano as a starting point.
Cash could certainly be part of a deal, however, and the Giants have the flexibility to take on bad money. Washington has a couple of awful deals on its hands in Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin. Could the Giants take on some of one of those deals to lessen the prospect cost? It's not impossible, but Washington would still want top prospect talent.
Other mailbag questions are addressed, including Steven Duggar's status as it compares to Luis González, whether Thairo Estrada could be a leadoff option for the SF Giants, and the host's earliest San Francisco Giants memory (it's a funny one).

Tommy La Stella powered the San Francisco Giants to a series win on Tuesday night, but the Rockies avoided the sweep on Wednesday. La Stella showed fans what he's capable of in the breakout performance, with a home run, two doubles, and a walk. People tend to sleep on his power, but he showed it off with a tape-measure home run as the very first hitter of the game.
Several other Giants pitched in on offense, as they scored 10 runs and beat the Rockies 10-7. Mike Yastrzemski, Brandon Crawford, and Darin Ruf also had big games. In Wednesday's loss, Logan Webb pitched great but the offense could not add on. Joey Bart came up in a couple of big spots with men on base and could not produce. His struggles, particularly with strikeouts, have looked worse in contrast to Curt Casali's recent strong performance. At some point, the SF Giants may have to consider making a move now that Michael Papierski is in the fold.

Well, they did it. The San Francisco Giants made another unpopular option decision, sending hot-hitting outfielder Luis González back to the minor leagues. González didn't deserve to be demoted, but the Giants had virtually no other choice. The only other conceivable option would've been carrying only 12 pitchers, which was clearly something they did not want to do—particularly in Denver.
Same thing happened with LaMonte Wade Jr. last year, and he was back up in four days after Brandon Belt got hurt. González very much put himself on the map with his month of strong play in the majors, and rest assured that he will be back. This is his last option year, and the SF Giants can retain his rights for six seasons. If he continues to play well, he could be part of the mix for a long time. Starting next season, he will no longer be able to be optioned.
Getting to the actual game, it was the Curt Casali and Mike Yastrzemski show on offense. Those two combined for three home runs, and the Giants needed every last one. Casali slugged two, and SF Giants catchers are now second in the majors in wRC+. Yastrzemski has been strong all season, and his home run last night was an impressive blast to right that traveled 420 feet. The San Francisco Giants' offense is second in the majors in runs scored per game.
John Brebbia and Camilo Doval closed it out in the final two frames with scoreless outings. Prior to the game, Mauricio Llovera was added to the roster, Yunior Marte was optioned, and Anthony DeSclafani was placed on the 60-day injured list. DeSclafani isn't eligible to return until June 21.

Mauricio Dubón was traded to the Houston Astros. The San Francisco Giants made the perhaps unpopular move because Dubón was out of minor league options, rosters shrunk from 28 to 26, and guys were getting healthy. Even after trading Dubón, the SF Giants will have another tough decision to make regarding the impending activation of Tommy La Stella.
Last year wasn't the best of La Stella. When he's right, he brings a rare combination of contact and power. La Stella owns a 125 wRC+ against righties since the 2019 season, with a K% under 10 and ISO near .200. He should be a valuable part of the Giants' offense, but it won't necessarily be easy to add him to the major league roster. The Giants will either have to option popular outfielder Luis González, who's done nothing but hit since being called up to replace the injured Steven Duggar, or else they'll have to option a pitcher and have 14 positions players and 12 pitchers. Based on past arrangements, they seem to prefer to carry as many pitchers as possible.
Things were mostly ugly for the Giants on Sunday Night Baseball in a blowout loss, but they took a turn for the better late in the game. González took the mound and threw some entertaining eephus pitches. In the top of the 9th, legendary first baseman Albert Pujols took the mound for St. Louis. González launched a three-run homer against Pujols, and Joey Bart hit a solo shot as well. Evan Longoria singled, and asked for the baseball. It was a lighthearted finish to a frustrating game and series.
